[0:04] improvement.

[0:07] >> Tonight, preparing for the worst.

[0:10] Widespread evacuations ordered in

[0:12] Florida as Hurricane Frances aims at a

[0:15] state still suffering from the last

[0:17] storm. The latest on where, when, and

[0:20] where it may go. Also, terror at school.

[0:24] More than a hundred Russian children and

[0:26] many others held hostage by Islamic

[0:29] fighters.

[0:30] Convention clash. Tougher speeches

[0:33] planned for tonight and a battle brewing

[0:35] over presidential debates.

[0:38] And is Kobe Bryant about to get a pass?

[0:41] We'll see why rape charges may be

[0:44] dropped.

[0:51] >> This is the CBS Evening News.

[0:55] With Dan Rather reporting tonight from

[0:57] the Republican National Convention in

[0:59] New York.

[1:01] >> Good evening. President Bush's

[1:03] re-election forces intend to step up the

[1:05] attacks here tonight on Democratic

[1:07] challenger Senator John Kerry. The

[1:09] president himself was out campaigning in

[1:11] Ohio again today. He's flying to New

[1:14] York City this evening and will give his

[1:16] acceptance speech here tomorrow. We'll

[1:18] have more about this convention in a

[1:19] moment, but first, some in the Florida

[1:21] delegation here have reason to be

[1:23] concerned about what's happening back

[1:25] home. Florida is a prime candidate for a

[1:28] devastating hit from Hurricane Frances.

[1:31] Hundreds of thousands of residents have

[1:33] been told to evacuate. Projections

[1:36] indicate this powerful storm is

[1:38] virtually certain to hit the US

[1:40] mainland, possibly by the weekend,

[1:42] probably somewhere between Florida and

[1:44] the Carolinas. A hurricane of this size

[1:47] and intensity can have far-reaching

[1:48] effects nationwide on transportation and

[1:51] the economy. CBS's Mark Strassmann is in

[1:54] Florida tonight.

[1:56] >> With disaster again in the wind, Florida

[1:59] braces for Frances, the massive Category

[2:02] 4 hurricane with winds of 140 miles an

[2:05] hour. Its US landfall is now forecast

[2:08] for as early as Friday.

[2:10] >> Somebody is going to have a very, very

[2:12] bad hurricane event here and it's

[2:14] actually going to cover a very wide

[2:16] area. Folks that thought that Hurricane

[2:18] Charley was extensive will be shocked by

[2:21] this one.

[2:22] >> With damage from Hurricane Charley not

[2:24] even 3 weeks old, Florida today ordered

[2:26] evacuations of nearly a half million

[2:28] people by tomorrow. Anxiety formed in

[2:31] long lines for plywood at Home Depot and

[2:33] there was a run on generators,

[2:35] batteries, and flashlights.

[2:37] >> We're asking people in our state to make

[2:40] the right decisions early and

[2:41] thoughtfully in a way that will protect

[2:43] their families and their homes.

[2:44] >> Oh my god.

[2:45] >> First Charley, now Frances. Cities like

[2:48] Orlando could become the worst double

[2:49] hurricane strike in at least a century

[2:52] with a fear that leftover debris could

[2:54] go airborne and become projectiles

[2:57] during Frances.

[2:58] >> So, this tree stood how tall?

[3:01] >> Oh, I would say

[3:04] about 60 ft.

[3:06] >> During Charley, a falling oak missed

[3:08] Perry Granger's wife by 3 ft and totaled

[3:11] the back half of his home.

[3:13] >> Sure it hurts, yeah. It hurts, yeah.

[3:15] Cuz we was proud of our home.

[3:19] >> Now you just want to save it from

[3:20] Frances.

[3:21] >> Yes, we want to put it back like it was

[3:22] and and we want to save it from Frances.

[3:25] >> Charley did 7 and 1/2 billion dollars in

[3:28] damage in Florida and Frances looks like

[3:31] Charley's big sister, the one with a

[3:33] terrible temper.

[3:36] Emergency officials here today were

[3:37] blunt with people under evacuation

[3:39] orders. They said, "Don't argue about

[3:41] it, just leave." Before Charley, this

[3:44] area went 40 years between major

[3:46] hurricanes. Soon, it could see two in 3

[3:49] weeks.

[3:50] Dan.

[3:52] >> Mark Strassmann reporting live from

[3:53] Orlando, Florida. In Russia tonight,

[3:56] heavily armed militants who invaded a

[3:58] school on the first day of the fall term

[4:00] are holding many hostages, including

[4:03] more than 100 children. President Bush

[4:05] called Russian President Putin offering

[4:07] US support, but CBS's Elizabeth Palmer

[4:10] reports for now the terrorists appear to

[4:13] be calling the shots.

[4:15] >> As Russian soldiers and snipers

[4:17] surrounded the school, negotiators

[4:19] established telephone contact with the

[4:21] hostage takers. A handful of students

[4:23] did manage to escape, witnesses say by

[4:26] hiding in the boiler room. But reports

[4:29] say 132 children, along with many of

[4:31] their parents, are still inside the

[4:34] school held hostage by guerrillas, some

[4:36] of them women, who are heavily armed and

[4:38] wearing explosive belts.

[4:41] Three people ran in with machine guns,

[4:43] says this boy, and I thought it was a

[4:44] joke at first. Then they started

[4:46] shooting in the air and we ran.

[4:49] Outside stricken family members waited,

[4:52] flinching at occasional explosions and

[4:54] bursts of gunfire.

[4:56] Some had to be restrained after

[4:57] officials said the guerrillas had

[4:59] threatened to kill 50 children for every

[5:01] one of their own killed by soldiers.

[5:04] Beslan is in the Russian region that

[5:06] borders the violent republic of

[5:08] Chechnya, where Russian forces have been

[5:10] fighting guerrillas for almost a decade.

[5:12] Over the years that war has regularly

[5:14] spilled over the border.

[5:16] Just last week two airplanes crashed

[5:19] after taking off from a Moscow airport.

[5:21] Russian officials suspect two female

[5:23] Chechen suicide bombers were aboard.

[5:26] Yesterday another Chechen woman blew

[5:28] herself up outside a busy Moscow metro

[5:31] station, killing nine. Most

[5:33] spectacularly, two years ago Chechen

[5:35] guerrillas took 800 theater-goers in

[5:38] Moscow hostage. More than 100 of them

[5:40] died later in a botched rescue

[5:42] operation. That's what Russians are

[5:45] remembering tonight as they wait for

[5:47] fresh news from Beslan.

[5:51] >> The hostage-takers are thought to be

[5:52] Chechen rebels with political demands,

[5:55] but whatever they are, the Russian

[5:56] government so far anyway is maintaining

[5:58] its traditional hardline and saying it

[6:01] will not give in to terrorists. Dan?

[6:04] >> It is an appalling reporting live from

[6:06] Moscow. In Iraq today, a US plane bombed

[6:09] a suspected militant hideout in

[6:12] Fallujah. Hospital reports say 17 quote

[6:15] civilians were killed. Earlier,

[6:17] kidnappers freed seven foreign truckers

[6:20] after their Kuwaiti employer paid a

[6:22] half-million-dollar ransom, but two

[6:24] captive French journalists remain under

[6:27] a death threat despite appeals from

[6:29] Muslim leaders for their release.

[6:31] CBS News has confirmed the US Army is

[6:34] about to file charges against about two

[6:36] dozen soldiers in the deaths of two

[6:38] prisoners in Afghanistan. Both men died

[6:41] in 2002 from complications of what are

[6:44] called, and I quote, blunt force

[6:46] injuries. Charges are expected to range

[6:49] from negligent homicide to dereliction

[6:51] of duty.

[6:53] Here at the Republican convention, Vice

[6:55] President Cheney among others will be at

[6:57] the podium tonight. CBS's John Roberts

[6:59] reports you can expect Cheney and the

[7:01] others to hit hard at the Democratic

[7:03] ticket.

[7:05] >> True to convention tradition, the Vice

[7:07] President will take sharp aim at the

[7:08] opposition in his speech tonight mocking

[7:11] what he calls John Kerry's confusion of

[7:13] conviction. Cheney is both asset and

[7:16] liability, a darling of the right, but a

[7:18] lightning rod for controversy.

[7:20] And in the worst of all worlds, Cheney

[7:22] has even drawn fire from conservatives

[7:24] for comments he made about same-sex

[7:26] marriage that Democrats like so much

[7:28] they made into a new commercial.

[7:30] >> So that's appropriately a matter for the

[7:32] states to decide that that's

[7:34] that's how it ought to best be handled.

[7:35] >> But the Vice President is not the only

[7:37] paradox on stage tonight.

[7:39] >> George Bush just doesn't get it. That's

[7:43] why we cannot afford four more years.

[7:45] >> 12 years after he ripped the first

[7:48] President Bush as keynote speaker at the

[7:49] 1992 Democratic Convention, Georgia

[7:52] Senator Zell Miller is back in the

[7:54] spotlight with a wholly different take

[7:56] on Bush the son.

[7:57] >> He's the kind of man that we need as a

[8:00] commander in chief of this country in a

[8:01] time of war.

[8:02] >> Call him disillusioned conservative

[8:04] Democrat or turncoat, it's the sort of

[8:06] remarkable about-face Miller is famous

[8:09] for. And he will turn tonight on John

[8:11] Kerry, a man he not long ago hailed as

[8:13] one of this nation's most authentic

[8:15] heroes.

[8:16] >> This man came back from Vietnam

[8:19] as a young man who

[8:21] was unsure of whether America

[8:25] was

[8:27] a force for good or evil.

[8:28] >> But even as the cast members swing to

[8:31] the right, Republicans will carefully

[8:32] keep the script aimed straight down

[8:34] center stage. A production critics say

[8:37] is meant to mask the deeper plot line of

[8:39] this Republican show. A party platform

[8:41] calling for constitutional amendments

[8:43] against both abortion and same-sex

[8:45] marriage, a ban on so-called civil

[8:47] unions for gays, and limits on stem cell

[8:50] research.

[8:51] >> What you've got here is all the

[8:52] trappings of of theater,

[8:55] uh the theater of the moderate.

[8:57] Uh but the reality behind the scenes is

[8:59] a production crew and a director,

[9:01] uh set of directors who are very

[9:02] conservative.

[9:03] >> And looking ahead to the next act, CBS

[9:06] News has learned that the Bush campaign

[9:07] will on Friday name former Secretary of

[9:09] State James Baker as its chief

[9:11] negotiator for the presidential debates.

[9:13] Sources say that Baker is likely to push

[9:15] for only two presidential debates

[9:17] instead of the proposed three, and one

[9:19] vice presidential debate.

[9:21] >> Dan.

[9:21] >> John Roberts reporting live from the

[9:22] convention floor. Thanks, John.

[9:24] >> In a break with tradition, Democrat

[9:26] Senator Kerry is not staying out of the

[9:28] spotlight during the opposition

[9:30] convention. CBS's Byron Pitts reports

[9:33] Senator Kerry launched a public fight

[9:35] back campaign today.

[9:37] >> With complaints from leading Democrats,

[9:39] he's been too soft and too slow

[9:41] responding to Republican attacks, today

[9:44] Senator John Kerry went on the attack.

[9:46] >> When it comes to Iraq,

[9:48] it's not that I would have done one

[9:50] thing differently,

[9:52] I would have done almost everything

[9:54] differently.

[9:55] >> Presidential candidates traditionally

[9:57] don't campaign during their rivals

[9:58] national convention. But in a race this

[10:01] tight, tradition's a luxury this

[10:03] candidate can't afford. Even in front of

[10:05] the American Legion, a group that

[10:07] normally votes Republican, Kerry hit the

[10:09] president head-on.

[10:11] >> The president himself on Monday admitted

[10:14] that he miscalculated

[10:16] in Iraq.

[10:17] >> Joe Lockhart, President Bill Clinton's

[10:19] former press secretary, has been brought

[10:21] in along with other Clinton veterans to

[10:23] sharpen Kerry's public image and to

[10:25] apply the old Clinton playbook. When

[10:28] attacked, attack back even harder. There

[10:31] was some evidence of that strategy

[10:32] today.

[10:33] >> The president said we can't win the war

[10:36] on terror, but I absolutely disagree

[10:39] with what he said in that interview in a

[10:41] moment of candor.

[10:43] With the right policies, this is a war

[10:46] we can win, this is a war we must win,

[10:48] and this is a war we will win.

[10:51] >> But will it be enough to right a ship

[10:53] some political analysts say has begun to

[10:55] drift? Will Kerry listen?

[10:58] >> The Kerry campaign really isn't run by

[11:01] anybody but John Kerry, and that's the

[11:04] problem. When a candidate is his own

[11:07] campaign manager, he's halfway to

[11:09] losing.

[11:10] >> Starting Friday, the Kerry campaign will

[11:12] begin a massive advertising blitz that

[11:14] will run until election day. The

[11:16] campaign rejects any suggestion there's

[11:18] a shake-up underway, but it is clear,

[11:20] say sources on the inside, if everything

[11:23] was working, those new faces wouldn't be

[11:25] here.

[11:26] Byron Pitts, CBS News, Nashville.

[11:30] >> We'll have more about the convention and

[11:31] the protests against President Bush's

[11:33] policies outside later in this

[11:35] broadcast. And our CBS News primetime

[11:38] convention coverage begins at 10:00

[11:40] Eastern time tonight. Coming up next on

[11:43] the CBS Evening News, the Kobe Bryant

[11:45] case. The prosecution may be pulling the

[11:47] plug before the trial even begins. We'll

[11:50] tell you why next. Then later, the Bush

[11:53] foreign policy. Has or has not the

[11:56] president kept the promises he made 4

[11:58] years ago? That's tonight's inside

[12:00] story. But first,

[12:04] CBS News honors fallen heroes. Shane

[12:07] Colton, a 12-year Army veteran, was

[12:10] killed when his Apache helicopter was

[12:12] shot down. His wife says Colton was the

[12:15] type of guy who'd always stop to help a

[12:17] disabled motorist. He loved restoring

[12:20] cars. He and 11-year-old son Lance were

[12:23] working on a Camaro.

[12:25] Lance is determined to finish that car

[12:27] and drive it when he turns 16.

[12:35] >> Wow, new cherry Pepto. I love cherries.

[12:39] >> Now there's a Pepto flavor everyone will

[12:42] love. And that's reason to dance.

[12:46] Look for it today.

[12:48] >> Fall allergy season's the worst, but now

[12:51] I'm Claritin Clear.

[12:52] >> For the worst, get the most. Claritin D

[12:55] relieves congestion and sinus pressure

[12:57] without drowsiness. That's Claritin

[12:59] Clear.

[13:00] >> There's clear,

[13:01] then there's Claritin Clear.

[13:05] >> A different generation needs a different

[13:07] kind of denture adhesive.

[13:08] >> Sea Bond is a thin wafer made from soft

[13:10] microfibers for comfort and three

[13:12] adhesives for all-day hold. No ooze or

[13:15] pasty mess. And a kind of hold and

[13:18] comfort you have to feel to believe.

[13:23] Sea Bond, a different generation.

[13:26] Dentures dingy? Get a bright, white

[13:28] smile with Sea Bond Brightening Gel.

[13:33] >> Millions of us are hospitalized with

[13:35] heart-related chest pain or a certain

[13:37] type of heart attack, what doctors call

[13:39] ACS. The cause? For most, it was blood

[13:42] platelets that formed clots, which

[13:44] blocked blood from getting to the heart.

[13:46] Think aspirin and other heart

[13:47] medications alone are enough? Plavix

[13:50] could help make a difference. So, ask

[13:52] your doctor about adding Plavix. Taken

[13:54] with aspirin and your current treatment,

[13:56] Plavix goes beyond what you're taking to

[13:58] help raise protection against heart

[13:59] attack or stroke. Plavix and your other

[14:02] medications work in different ways.

[14:04] Plavix taken with aspirin plays its own

[14:06] role in keeping blood platelets from

[14:07] sticking together and forming clots,

[14:09] which helps keep blood flowing.

[14:11] >> If you have a medical condition that

[14:12] causes bleeding, such as a stomach

[14:14] ulcer, you shouldn't use Plavix. The

[14:16] risk of bleeding may increase with

[14:17] Plavix and when you take Plavix with

[14:19] certain other medicines, including

[14:21] aspirin. Review your medicines with your

[14:23] doctor to minimize this risk. Additional

[14:25] rare but serious side effects could

[14:26] occur.

[14:28] >> Add more protection against heart attack

[14:30] or stroke with Plavix.

[14:33] >> There's something delicious going

[14:35] around. It's these reclosable bottles of

[14:37] Ensure, a good source of complete,

[14:39] balanced nutrition that goes anywhere

[14:41] you do in five creamy, rich flavors.

[14:44] Ensure, drink to your health wherever

[14:47] you go.

[14:48] >> Happy anniversary.

[14:52] >> I am so lucky.

[14:55] >> Ace Hardware is having a sale.

[14:57] >> Stop in and save on hundreds of items at

[14:59] the 80th anniversary sale. This weekend

[15:01] only at Ace, the helpful place.

[15:05] >> Colorado prosecutors reportedly are

[15:07] preparing to drop all criminal rape

[15:09] charges against basketball player Kobe

[15:11] Bryant, accused of forcing himself on a

[15:14] then 19-year-old woman at a mountain

[15:16] resort last summer. This follows signs

[15:19] of growing signs the prosecution's case

[15:21] was unraveling for among other reasons

[15:24] some key decisions by the judge. CBS's

[15:26] Sandra Hughes has late details, Sandra.

[15:30] >> Dan, all the lawyers involved in the

[15:31] criminal rape case against Kobe Bryant,

[15:33] as well as the attorneys involved in the

[15:35] civil lawsuit, have assembled inside the

[15:37] courthouse. It appears the prosecution

[15:39] is ready to throw in the towel,

[15:42] reportedly asking the judge to dismiss

[15:44] the charges against Kobe Bryant.

[15:47] The prosecution has been criticized by

[15:50] some legal experts who saw this case as

[15:52] potentially weak from the beginning, but

[15:54] it was a series of adverse rulings that

[15:56] triggered the collapse of the case.

[15:59] In a rare exception to the state's rape

[16:01] shield law, the accuser's alleged sexual

[16:03] activity with others around the time of

[16:05] the encounter was ruled admissible at

[16:07] trial, and a last-minute prosecution

[16:09] effort to delay the trial was denied.

[16:12] Then there were the judicial blunders

[16:14] that prosecutors feared might have

[16:15] tainted a jury pool. The accuser's name

[16:17] was mistakenly posted twice on the

[16:20] court's website, her medical records

[16:22] accidentally given to defense attorneys,

[16:24] court transcripts about the woman's

[16:26] sexual encounters were mistakenly

[16:28] emailed to media outlets. Just today the

[16:31] defense accused the prosecution of

[16:33] withholding a report from its own

[16:35] forensic expert who said the accuser's

[16:38] injuries could have come from consensual

[16:40] sex, what Bryant's been claiming all

[16:43] along.

[16:44] >> Sounds like that there were some

[16:45] surprises on the prosecution side all

[16:47] along the way, that perhaps they didn't

[16:49] know the whole story when they started

[16:51] to bring this prosecution.

[16:52] >> Another big nail in the coffin came when

[16:55] the accuser's attorneys filed a civil

[16:57] suit against Bryant, giving the defense

[16:59] new and compelling evidence to claim the

[17:01] 20-year-old woman had been in it for the

[17:03] money from the beginning.

[17:06] Possibly part of today's deal, the civil

[17:08] lawsuit could be settled as well, Dan.

[17:12] >> Sandra Hughes reporting live from Los

[17:14] Angeles. The relatively few traders on

[17:16] Wall Street this convention week were a

[17:18] bit rattled by today's economic news. It

[17:21] includes slower growth in the American

[17:23] manufacturing sector and after an 8-day

[17:26] slide, a big jump in oil prices on new

[17:30] worries about supplies. At the end of

[17:32] the day, stocks closed mixed. The Dow

[17:34] lost 5 and 1/2 points. The Nasdaq gained

[17:37] about 12. Straight ahead on the CBS

[17:39] Evening News, President Bush's campaign

[17:42] promises on foreign policy. Has he kept

[17:45] them or not? We'll give you the inside

[17:47] story.

[17:51] >> Oh, Capital One.

[18:07] >> You can find an island inside your

[18:09] specially marked Capital One envelope.

[18:11] Check your mail for the Capital One No

[18:13] Hassle Island Giveaway. You could

[18:14] instantly win your own private island.

[18:17] >> What's in your wallet?

[18:26] >> Filled up, only Alka-Seltzer is

[18:28] instantly ready to break up and dissolve

[18:30] away the full feeling of indigestion and

[18:32] pain.

[18:32] >> How about a rematch?

[18:34] >> Break it up with Alka-Seltzer.

[18:46] >> For great fit and strong long hold, fix

[18:48] it and complete and forget it.

[18:51] >> Hello. Remember me? I'm Digger THE

[18:54] DERMATOPHYTE, YOUR NAIL INFECTION. You

[18:56] may have tried to get me with these

[18:57] over-the-counter surface treatments, but

[19:00] I live deep under your nails. I made

[19:03] myself a home down here and I'm not

[19:05] leaving. I may even spread out to other

[19:07] nails. I mean, which look at this view?

[19:10] >> If you have thick, discolored or nails,

[19:12] over-the-counter surface treatments

[19:14] might not reach the infection. That's

[19:15] why you should ask your doctor about

[19:17] prescription-only Lamisil tablets.

[19:19] Unlike surface treatments, Lamisil is a

[19:21] pill that works through the bloodstream

[19:22] to target and attack the infection at

[19:24] its source, under the nail. In fact, you

[19:26] may start to see clearer, healthier

[19:28] nails in just 3 months. Lamisil isn't

[19:30] for people with liver or kidney

[19:31] problems. In rare cases, serious side

[19:33] effects in the liver or serious skin

[19:34] reactions have occurred, so your doctor

[20:17] Summit Medical Center.

[20:22] >> There's been a setback tonight in the

[20:23] war on terror. The Justice Department is

[20:25] now recommending dismissal of

[20:27] convictions in a Detroit terror cell

[20:29] case after admitting to a {quote}

[20:32] pattern of mistakes and oversights by

[20:34] federal prosecutors. The government also

[20:37] agreed to a new trial for the defendants

[20:39] on fraud, not terror, charges.

[20:43] As we await President Bush's address to

[20:44] this convention tomorrow night, CBS News

[20:47] is taking a look back this week at

[20:49] promises President Bush made 4 years ago

[20:52] and what became of them. Tonight, the

[20:54] topic is war. How candidate Bush said he

[20:57] would and would not use military force.

[21:00] CBS's Barry Petersen in Baghdad has the

[21:02] inside story.

[21:05] >> When America uses force in the world,

[21:07] the cause must be just. The goal must be

[21:10] clear

[21:11] and the victory must be overwhelming.

[21:16] >> With 9/11, the cause was just, war on

[21:19] terrorism. The response was to root out

[21:22] the Taliban and Osama bin Laden in

[21:24] Afghanistan. But overwhelming victory

[21:26] remains elusive. The Taliban is still

[21:29] killing Americans and Osama bin Laden

[21:31] lives to plan another 9/11.

[21:34] In Iraq, a new goal, eliminate weapons

[21:37] of mass destruction, the administration

[21:39] insisted threatened America, but there

[21:42] were none.

[21:43] Then the goals started shifting. Get rid

[21:46] of Saddam and then something far harder,

[21:48] far fuzzier, bring democracy to Iraq.

[21:51] >> That looks, I think, highly uncertain

[21:55] at best.

[21:57] >> The price is being paid in blood. Almost

[22:00] a thousand Americans dead, nearly 7,000

[22:03] wounded.

[22:03] >> I would be very careful about using our

[22:05] troops as nation builders.

[22:08] >> But President Bush's first term in

[22:10] office will be remembered for just such

[22:13] an effort. America promised to rebuild

[22:15] this country, but that has not been

[22:17] done. So many Iraqis still live in a

[22:19] misery of destruction that awesome

[22:22] American firepower left behind. To the

[22:25] Iraqi people, it is a promise yet to be

[22:27] kept. The one goal above all others,

[22:31] winning the war against terrorism, but

[22:33] Iraq may hinder, not help, winning that

[22:35] war. Once unified under an iron-fisted

[22:38] dictator, it is now a series of regions

[22:41] ruled by tribal or religious leaders, a

[22:44] breeding ground for terrorists all

[22:46] across the Middle East. Terrorists

[22:49] united by one cause, to strike

[22:52] Americans.

[22:53] >> You have to conclude that the that the

[22:55] war so far

[22:56] um has made us substantially less safe.

[22:59] >> Americans can be forgiven for doubting

[23:02] if the goals are still clear and for

[23:05] worrying that overwhelming victory,

[23:07] indeed any victory,

[23:09] is something we may never have.

[23:12] Barry Petersen, CBS News, Baghdad.

[23:16] >> Still to come on the CBS Evening News,

[23:18] taking to the streets. Hundreds have

[23:20] been arrested outside this convention

[23:22] hall, but there is something different

[23:24] about both police and protesters this

[23:27] time around.

[23:33] kind of denture adhesive. Sea Bond is a

[23:40] For a kind of hold and comfort you have

[24:38] Beano even work on vegetables?

[24:40] Beano even works on husbands.

[24:43] Take Beano before, there'll be no gas.

[26:04] teachers could be out of a job due to a

[26:06] more than million-dollar deficit. We'll

[26:08] have the details tonight at 6.

[26:12] >> While the Republican faithful are having

[26:13] their say here inside Madison Square

[26:15] Garden, protesters against President

[26:18] Bush's policies are having theirs

[26:20] outside. Today, thousands protesting

[26:22] Bush economic policies and the loss of

[26:24] jobs formed what they called an

[26:27] unemployment line, 3 miles long. Along

[26:30] with some of these anti-Bush

[26:32] demonstrations have come arrests,

[26:34] hundreds of them, as CBS's Jim Axelrod

[26:36] reports.

[26:38] >> New York City's cops haven't been shy

[26:40] arresting demonstrators this week.

[26:42] >> EVERYONE HERE IS UNDER ARREST.

[26:44] >> WHEN YOU GOT OUT OF HAND, we arrested

[26:46] you.

[26:46] >> And even when you didn't, it would

[26:48] appear. Take 17-year-old Austin Muller,

[26:50] part of the bike protest. He says he

[26:53] followed every police order not to block

[26:55] traffic, but still ended up in jail.

[26:58] >> The cops have been acting without any

[27:01] discretion. They've been told to arrest

[27:03] on site anybody in the group.

[27:06] Even if that person is a 17-year-old

[27:08] with no political agenda.

[27:11] >> More than 1,700 people have now been

[27:13] arrested. A little perspective.

[27:17] That's three times more than Chicago

[27:19] police made all week during the 1968

[27:22] Democratic Convention, the standard for

[27:24] violent conventions. But the numbers

[27:27] don't tell the whole story. How does

[27:28] Chicago in 1968 and New York in 2004

[27:32] compare?

[27:33] >> Well, you don't have the same kind of

[27:34] intensity.

[27:35] >> Tom Robbins was in Chicago as a

[27:36] demonstrator. He now writes for the

[27:38] Village Voice.

[27:40] >> I have seen both uh cops and protesters

[27:43] trying to preempt any uh

[27:45] collisions where it might really lead to

[27:47] violence. I think both sides have been

[27:48] trying to hold back.

[27:50] >> That's right. Both sides, meaning the

[27:52] relative peace in the street has at

[27:54] least something to do with the

[27:56] protesters in the streets.

[27:58] >> You look at these flower children, these

[27:59] aged flower children and their children,

[28:01] you know, and their grandchildren. And

[28:03] it's it This is not about wanting

[28:04] violence.

[28:05] >> No, not every protester is here to sing

[28:07] Kumbaya. There's plenty of others. And

[28:10] yes, this time tomorrow there could be

[28:12] real trouble in the streets. But for

[28:14] those wanting to get through the week

[28:16] without violence, so far so good.

[28:19] Jim Axelrod, CBS News, New York.

[29:15] >> And things are so tight for one Middle

[29:17] Tennessee school system, teachers may

[29:25] >> The news is now.

[29:27] >> From your news and information leader.

[29:33] This is NewsChannel 5 at 6.

[29:36] >> Good evening. Today was John Kerry's

[29:38] turn.

[29:39] >> The Democratic nominee for president was

[29:41] in Nashville one day after President

[29:43] Bush paid a visit. Kerry has wrapped up

[29:45] his trip and has left Nashville.

[29:47] NewsChannel 5's Chris Cannon is live at

[29:49] the airport where Kerry's plane just

[29:50] took off. Chris?

[29:52] >> That's right, Chris. Just about 2

[29:53] minutes ago Kerry's plane took off from

[29:55] this runway right over here. This is the

[29:56] motorcade that brought him to the

[29:58] airport about 5:25 today. When he got

[30:00] here, he spent about 15 minutes greeting

[30:03] and meeting supporters. As you can see

[30:05] here, he was taking pictures and

[30:07] pressing the flesh. There were about a

[30:08] dozen supporters who lined up at the

[30:10] steps of the plane to meet with John

[30:12] Kerry. He also met with several police

[30:14] officers and highway patrol troopers. As

[30:16] you can see
