[0:08] This is NBC Nightly News, Monday, April
[0:10] 4th, with John Chancellor and David
[0:13] Brinkley reporting from the NBC News
[0:15] Center in New York.
[0:17] >> Good evening. John Chancellor is off
[0:19] tonight. He'll be back tomorrow. A DC9
[0:23] passenger jet trying to get into Atlanta
[0:25] airport late this afternoon with both
[0:27] engines out crashed 30 mi from a city
[0:30] and exploded. Our reports at the moment
[0:33] are subject to change that 57 are dead.
[0:37] It was a Southern Airlines flight from
[0:39] Huntsville, Alabama. Rick Edwards of
[0:42] WSBTV
[0:44] in Atlanta has flown over the wreckage
[0:46] scene in a helicopter and has a report
[0:48] for us now.
[0:50] There are several dozen ambulances
[0:52] spread from one end of New Hope Road to
[0:54] the other. And the debris left from the
[0:56] DC9 crash is just that, just debris. No
[0:59] wing sections, no fuselage, just what
[1:01] appears to be the tail section, the
[1:03] elevator, and the stabilizer. Also,
[1:05] we've reported a house on fire,
[1:07] completely burned out apparently because
[1:09] of the uh crash of the DC9. Two or three
[1:12] houses on further down apparently
[1:14] escaped any kind of any kind of damage
[1:17] at all. There are several trees which
[1:20] have been just leveled by the crash of
[1:22] the DC9. Fireman apparently in a state
[1:25] of shock as uh where the pilot so far is
[1:28] quite a sight to see what used to be a
[1:30] DC9 and no remnants. No fuselage, no
[1:33] wings or anything at all.
[1:36] >> Rick Edwards from WSBTV in Atlanta. The
[1:40] pilot of the plane radioed the Atlanta
[1:42] Tower. He had lost both engines. Both
[1:44] had flamed out and also had troubles
[1:46] with his windshield. He was trying to
[1:48] land,
