[0:18] as relief efforts step up along the Gulf
[0:20] Coast. Still, a huge medical and
[0:23] humanitarian crisis remains. I'm John
[0:26] Roberts in New Orleans and that's where
[0:28] we'll begin tonight. I'm Thalia Shurus
[0:30] in New York. Evacuees by the thousands
[0:33] are arriving in Houston where the
[0:35] Astrodome has reached its limit. And
[0:37] mental health workers face the challenge
[0:39] of healing the hurt for the smallest
[0:41] hurricane victims of all.

[0:56] >> Good evening everyone. 5 days after
[0:59] Hurricane Katrina battered the Gulf
[1:01] Coast and swamped New Orleans, the flow
[1:03] of supplies in and the transport of
[1:05] victims out seemed to have finally
[1:07] gained momentum. Here's the latest.
[1:10] Evacuation operations are now
[1:12] concentrated on the New Orleans
[1:13] Convention Center, where an estimated
[1:16] 30,000 people had been stranded. Rescue
[1:19] officials say 5,000 people have been
[1:21] plucked off rooftops, but they have no
[1:23] idea how many are still isolated in
[1:25] their homes. The Pentagon is sending
[1:28] 7,000 soldiers and Marines along with
[1:30] 10,000 more National Guard troops into
[1:32] the region over the next 3 days. The
[1:35] major US airlines have started an
[1:37] unprecedented airlift of victims from
[1:39] Lewis Armstrong Airport, while the
[1:41] federal government announced it is
[1:42] chartering three Carn
