[0:00] The Justice Department is asking about

[0:02] my whereabouts.

[0:03] >> There are only 3 hours left of 24.

[0:06] >> You need to tell me where that canister

[0:08] is or so. Help me God. I will lay you

[0:09] down right here, right now. Do it.

[0:15] >> Tonight, a movie stunt goes terribly

[0:17] wrong and it's all caught on camera.

[0:22] Find out what happened when this Ferrari

[0:24] skidded out of control in the middle of

[0:26] Time Square.

[0:28] A warning for renters after the Fox 12

[0:30] investigators uncover very personal

[0:32] information in an open dumpster. How the

[0:35] apartment managers say it got there. A

[0:38] driver runs down a local bicyclist and

[0:40] leaves him for dead.

[0:42] >> We are trying to keep him conscious cuz

[0:43] he kept fading in and out.

[0:44] >> But you can help see if you have the

[0:46] clues to help find Fox 12's most wanted.

[0:49] But first, wind and rain pound the

[0:53] Northwest.

[0:54] >> Go great. The day we pick to go to the

[0:56] beach is going to be high winds.

[0:57] >> From the coast to the valley, we'll

[0:59] break down what we've seen tonight and

[1:01] what you'll face during tomorrow

[1:03] morning's commute. Live team coverage is

[1:05] first on Fox.

[1:10] >> And good evening. This is a first live

[1:11] local weather alert. I'm Wayne Garcia.

[1:13] >> And I'm Shauna Parsons. Wild weather

[1:15] night across the state. In the Portland

[1:16] area, there are power outages and trees

[1:18] down. And along the Oregon coast, high

[1:21] winds and rain from Pacific City up to

[1:23] seaside. The Oregon coast took a beating

[1:25] today as those winds whipped coastal

[1:27] communities. We have live team coverage

[1:29] of the storm tonight. We begin with

[1:30] KPTV's Chad Carter. He's live in Seaside

[1:32] with a look at current conditions. Chad?

[1:35] >> Yeah, and Shauna. While the winds have

[1:37] tapered just a bit, they are still

[1:39] blowing this evening. Behind me, you can

[1:41] see old flapping in the wind here at

[1:44] Seaside. And it's a day that's been a

[1:46] bit of a roller coaster for many who try

[1:48] to enjoy a day at the beach.

[1:52] Tonight, if you didn't know better,

[1:54] you'd think it was the middle of winter

[1:55] along the coast.

[1:57] High winds, blowing sand,

[2:01] heavy rains. But this is Mother Nature

[2:03] at her best, keeping everyone on their

[2:05] toes even in May.

[2:07] >> Here we go.

[2:11] >> Yay. With winds whipping through

[2:14] communities at 30 m an hour and gusts in

[2:16] places like Lincoln City topping out at

[2:18] almost 60, it's understandable places

[2:21] like the seaside boardwalk was nearly

[2:23] deserted today. And those who were out

[2:25] and about found their luck blown away.

[2:28] >> I was watching the news this morning and

[2:30] uh they said high winds and I'm like,

[2:32] "Oh great, the day we pick to go to the

[2:34] beach, it's going to be high winds."

[2:37] Though for the dieards, the surf was

[2:38] just too good to pass up. As we found

[2:40] these surfers braving the cold waters

[2:42] for the perfect wave.

[2:44] And in Canon Beach, those who live

[2:46] through this every day say it's just

[2:48] another day in paradise.

[2:50] >> Storms are fun. Storms are always fun,

[2:52] you know.

[2:52] >> Yeah. Especially the bigger storms.

[2:54] >> Yeah.

[2:54] >> But this is just kind of Joemo everyday

[2:57] weather, right?

[2:58] >> Yeah. It's not really that big of a

[2:59] deal. The high wind warning is in effect

[3:01] until early tomorrow morning. But most

[3:03] here feel no matter what time of year it

[3:05] is, there's nothing like a storm along

[3:08] the Oregon coast.

[3:09] >> We'll have some dinner and then go back

[3:10] to the motel and watch the beach, watch

[3:13] the water.

[3:16] Now, we saw lots of rain here on the

[3:18] Oregon coast throughout the day and the

[3:19] winds, as I mentioned, still blowing

[3:21] fairly strongly this evening, but as of

[3:24] right now, we have not heard any

[3:26] reporting reports rather of damaging

[3:28] winds or any power outages along this

[3:32] portion of the coast. Reporting live in

[3:33] Seaside, Chad Carter, the 10:00 news.

[3:36] >> The powerful storm moved from south to

[3:38] north, so gusty conditions hit the

[3:40] central Oregon coast a little earlier in

[3:41] the evening. Our first live local

[3:43] weather coverage continues now with

[3:45] meteorologist Stephanie Crowovich live

[3:47] with that story. Steph,

[3:48] >> well, the peak winds hit Pacific City

[3:50] just after 5:00 tonight with gusts up

[3:52] around 60 mph. The storm also turned up

[3:56] some big waves in the Pacific and we saw

[3:58] a handful of surfers making a beline for

[4:00] those waves in full wet suits of course.

[4:03] People who live and work in Pacific City

[4:05] say winds this strong are kind of rare

[4:07] for this time of year. We did find a few

[4:09] brave souls hitting the beach for a walk

[4:11] in the whipping winds and some more

[4:13] cautious beach visitors viewing the

[4:15] storm from the comfort of their cars.

[4:18] >> It's kind of fun for storm watching. The

[4:21] biggest concern would be people really

[4:23] being careful around the surf. A lot of

[4:25] times this time of year, high winds can

[4:27] create high surf that people can get

[4:29] surprised by.

[4:31] Some of the hotels in Pacific City and

[4:33] other towns along the Oregon coast

[4:35] embrace the gusty wet weather by

[4:37] offering special storm watcher packages.

[4:39] Reporting live tonight, Stephanie

[4:41] Krellovich, the 10:00 news. And

[4:42] tonight's storm caused power outages and

[4:44] down trees across the metro area, too. A

[4:47] giant tree fell across Toiliger

[4:49] Boulevard in Lake Asiggo, closing the

[4:51] road and knocking out electricity to

[4:53] dozens of people. KPTV's Mark Ross

[4:55] continues our live stream coverage from

[4:56] Lake Asiggo tonight. Mark

[4:58] >> and Sean, it is still an active scene

[5:00] over here and a dangerous scene

[5:01] according to crews. Take a look behind

[5:02] me. It's one of the most disrupted areas

[5:04] in the entire metro area right now. Cops

[5:06] still on scene blocking the roads with

[5:08] flares, police cars, and of course

[5:10] officers. Fire crews say the tree was

[5:12] about 80 ft tall and took down power

[5:14] lines as it crashed across the road.

[5:21] PGE worked to control the down lines

[5:23] which set off a brush fire right when

[5:25] our Fox 12 crew was there. shooting the

[5:27] scene. Crews say that power line also

[5:30] set the tree on fire right when it came

[5:31] down, sending 15 foot flames shooting

[5:34] into the sky, even with how wet it is

[5:36] out here tonight. The tree went down

[5:38] around 7:30 tonight on Trilliliger near

[5:40] State Street. Cops turned away drivers

[5:42] and secured roadblocks on both ends of

[5:43] Towiliger that were affected by the down

[5:45] trees. Crews used chainsaws to clear the

[5:48] damage. At last report, PG crews were

[5:50] still on scene trying to control that

[5:52] down power line that set off the

[5:54] secondary fire that you saw when we were

[5:55] there and also restore power to the

[5:57] dozens of people affected by the storm

[5:59] tonight. Reporting live in Lake Oiggo,

[6:01] Mark Ross, the 10:00 news.

[6:03] >> Well, the weather caused some havoc in

[6:05] uh to power lines in Tiger tonight. A

[6:07] viewer sent us these pictures of crews

[6:09] working on the scene. A tree took down

[6:11] power lines in a transformer near

[6:13] Southwest Bull Mountain and Roshack

[6:15] roads. Firefighters and police were both

[6:17] called to that area. No word yet on the

[6:19] extent of the damage there. And just

[6:22] into our newsroom, the Red Cross is at a

[6:24] local apartment complex after a tree

[6:26] fell down. It happened around 7:30

[6:28] tonight at a complex on Barnes Road in

[6:30] the Cedar Mill area. Authorities say the

[6:32] uh tree is sitting against the roof of

[6:34] the complex. They've shut off the power

[6:37] and have evacuated eight people out of

[6:39] their units. No injuries are reported.

[6:41] >> Time now to check in with chief

[6:43] meteorologist Mark Nelson. Mark, has the

[6:44] worst of that storm passed by yet?

[6:46] >> Uh definitely. Yes. not only for the

[6:48] coast but also here in the valleys. We

[6:49] saw the rain cut off real quickly a

[6:51] little bit earlier. We'll take a look at

[6:52] the totals in a minute. But let's check

[6:54] out the wind speeds because for the

[6:55] month of May, these were really

[6:57] impressive numbers. Even if it was mid-

[6:58] winter, we'd say, "Ah, that was a pretty

[7:00] good storm." Look at that. 63 mile per

[7:01] hour gust of Florence. Same thing at

[7:03] Newport. That's on the Aquino Bay

[7:04] Bridge. 72 at Walport, 57 at Lincoln

[7:08] City. Now, the winds in general didn't

[7:09] seem quite as strong as you headed down

[7:10] up towards the north coast. But even for

[7:12] May, a 47 at Rockaway is pretty

[7:14] respectable. Mount Hebo, that's at 3,000

[7:16] ft, but peak gust of 81 m hour up there.

[7:20] Now, let's take a look at the rainfall

[7:21] totals. That was the second component of

[7:23] this storm. And man, the rain really

[7:24] came down this evening. Uh some spots

[7:26] over an inch of rain here in the metro

[7:28] area. Most of it in about a 5 or 6 hour

[7:31] period. And then the wind. Well, here in

[7:33] town, we didn't have much of any wind.

[7:34] And right now, we just have a light

[7:35] south wind. I don't think anybody had a

[7:37] gust much above 20 m hour. But once the

[7:40] rain moved out, we even had a few sun

[7:41] breaks this evening. Boy, this storm

[7:43] left as quickly as it came in. We were

[7:45] left with the cloud cover and the

[7:46] showers. Let's go to our live radar

[7:47] quickly and you'll see just scattered

[7:48] showers showing up around the region.

[7:50] Right now it looks dry here in Portland.

[7:52] Forecast looking much brighter coming

[7:53] up.

[7:54] >> Okay, Mark, you can find more coverage

[7:55] of this first live local weather alert

[7:57] online at kpv.com. There you can see

[7:59] viewer pictures from the storm. Also

[8:01] that live radar that Mark just showed

[8:03] us. It's all for you at kptv.com.

[8:08] A local bicyclist is in the hospital

[8:10] tonight with a broken nose and missing

[8:11] teeth after Fox 12's Most Wanted slammed

[8:14] into it with an SUV and then took off.

[8:16] It happened at around 10:00 this morning

[8:18] near the intersection of Northeast 21st

[8:20] Street and Columbia Boulevard in

[8:21] Portland. KPTV's Mark Hanahan is live in

[8:24] Northeast Portland tonight with a story

[8:25] you'll see only on 12. Mark.

[8:27] >> Well, Shauna Brandon Darren says it

[8:28] happened here at this intersection. He

[8:30] says the driver of that SUV never even

[8:32] stopped. So badly injured, he had to get

[8:34] up and walk back to his job to call for

[8:36] help.

[8:38] With his family by his side, Brandon

[8:40] Darren lies in a hospital bed in Legacy

[8:42] Emanuel's intensive care unit.

[8:44] >> His face is just all messed up from

[8:46] hitting the windshield.

[8:47] >> His nose is broken. He's missing four

[8:49] front teeth and his face is badly

[8:51] swollen. Tonight, he's unable to talk on

[8:53] camera. So, his mom, Linda, explains to

[8:55] us what happened. He was halfway through

[8:57] the intersection when um this vehicle

[9:00] ended up coming and running right into

[9:02] him.

[9:03] She says her son was riding his bike

[9:05] through a crosswalk at the intersection

[9:06] of Northeast 21st and Columbia Boulevard

[9:09] when a driver in a midsize SUV slammed

[9:11] into Brandon's front wheel,

[9:13] >> spun his handlebars around, and Brandon

[9:15] ended up being thrown um into the

[9:18] passenger mirror and then ended up

[9:20] rolling over and smashing his left side

[9:22] of his face into the w windshield on the

[9:25] passenger side.

[9:25] >> Police say the driver never stopped,

[9:27] never asked to see if he was okay, just

[9:29] kept on going. And while Brandon says he

[9:31] doesn't remember what happened next, he

[9:33] was somehow able to walk to his job a

[9:35] half block away where he collapsed on

[9:37] the floor.

[9:38] >> We were trying to keep him conscious cuz

[9:39] he kept fading in and out.

[9:40] >> An ambulance took him to the hospital

[9:42] and police searched the area for the

[9:44] driver, but so far no arrests have been

[9:46] made. And his family is outraged.

[9:48] >> How can anybody, any person with, you

[9:51] know, any um heart do this?

[9:55] Never thought it would happen to us.

[9:56] Despite her son's injuries, Linda is

[9:59] thankful he's expected to be okay.

[10:01] Still, she admits seeing him in a

[10:02] hospital bed is tough, especially

[10:04] knowing the person who caused all of his

[10:06] pain remains on the run.

[10:08] >> I haven't broke down yet, but it's like

[10:10] it's starting to get there because now

[10:11] it's all starting to kick in.

[10:13] >> Now, Brandon describes that SUV that hit

[10:15] him as a mid90s Ford Explorer, either

[10:17] teal or green in color. He says now it

[10:20] likely has front end or windshield

[10:21] damage. If you think you might know who

[10:23] the driver of that SUV is, or anything

[10:24] about this case, that could help. Please

[10:26] contact Portland police. Reporting live

[10:28] tonight in Northeast Portland, Mark

[10:29] Henryan, the 10:00 news. Deputies need

[10:32] your help finding a man who tried to rob

[10:34] a woman at a Home Depot in Happy Valley.

[10:36] Cops say that the crime happened about

[10:37] 3:00 this afternoon on Southeast 82nd in

[10:39] Johnson Creek. A woman says the suspect

[10:42] had a handgun and tried to take her

[10:43] purse in the parking lot. Deputies say

[10:45] the man hit the woman, then ran off

[10:48] without the purse. He's described as a

[10:50] Hispanic man in his early 30s, about

[10:51] 5'6, with a medium build. He was last

[10:54] seen wearing a black hooded sweatshirt.

[10:58] >> The 10:00 news is just getting started.

[11:00] >> You wouldn't want to see this in your

[11:02] landlord's dumpster.

[11:03] >> The potential is just incredibly awful.

[11:07] Completely awful. I mean, I was just

[11:09] shocked. Really shocked.

[11:10] >> The Fox 12 investigators ask the

[11:12] managers of a local apartment complex

[11:14] how their renters's personal information

[11:16] ended up in the trash. Was Portland

[11:19] Mayor Sam Adams drinking and driving?

[11:21] Fox 12 puts rumors to the rest. What

[11:24] police are saying about the mayor's

[11:25] condition at the scene of a fender

[11:27] bender? The lumberjacks are leaving. Why

[11:30] Portland's pro lacrosse team is shipping

[11:32] out of town. And it could be the end of

[11:35] a popular pastime for Oregon kids. Only

[11:38] on 12 tonight, the hidden dangers of

[11:40] off-road racing that have nothing to do

[11:42] with bruises and broken bones. And it

[11:45] was a heck of a soaking this evening,

[11:47] but much drier weather is on the way.

[11:48] We've got the latest coming up in the

[11:49] 7-day forecast.

[11:51] >> You're watching the 10:00 news first

[11:54] live local.

[12:01] >> Only takes 12 minutes on Fox 12 to get

[12:03] all the news, weather, and traffic you

[12:05] need to start your day. 12 on 12 on Good

[12:07] Day Oregon

[12:08] >> tomorrow morning starting at 4:30.

[12:11] >> It's time for lucky. It's time for lucky

[12:13] time. I am a winner now. I'm a spinner.

[12:17] And if I win, I'll bet myself a vine

[12:19] dinner. Those fancy dice. So very nice.

[12:22] >> If doing your personal lucky dance makes

[12:24] gambling more fun, please go ahead and

[12:27] do it. As long as you don't lose sight

[12:29] of the fact lottery games are games of

[12:31] chance. The odds of winning are always

[12:34] the same, no matter what socks you're

[12:37] wearing.

[12:41] >> Cake time.

[12:42] >> Yeah, I got it at DQ. Oh. Oh, hey, I'll

[12:45] take it in.

[12:45] >> It's okay, honey. I got it.

[12:46] >> Come on, baby. Just let me help you out.

[12:48] >> Well, you can grab the forks.

[12:53] >> Give me the cake.

[12:54] >> Fine. Here.

[12:55] >> Thank you.

[12:57] >> Look what I have.

[13:01] >> I got the forks.

[13:02] >> Yay.

[13:04] >> Get the cake. Get the glory. Dairy Queen

[13:06] Mother's Day cakes. Vanilla, fudge

[13:08] crunch, and chocolate.

[13:11] Police are tracking a dangerous

[13:13] predator, the cougar attack that has a

[13:15] local community on edge. It's coming up

[13:16] on the 10:00 news first live local.

[13:21] Right now at Men's Warehouse, when you

[13:23] buy one designer suit, you'll get one

[13:25] free. That's right, two suits for less

[13:28] than the price of one at a department

[13:30] store. You're going to like the way you

[13:32] look. I guarantee it.

[13:36] If you heat your home with natural gas,

[13:39] you know it's warm and comforting.

[13:42] You know how consistently it heats your

[13:44] water. You know the control you have

[13:46] when you're cooking and how you can

[13:49] always count on natural gas. Oregon

[13:52] homes using high efficiency natural gas

[13:54] appliances instead of electric emit an

[13:57] average of 20% less greenhouse gases,

[14:00] making your use of natural gas healthier

[14:02] for our planet.

[14:06] You know what, Mike? I'm moving in.

[14:07] What? With me?

[14:08] >> What are you crazy? I'm moving into

[14:10] Lintita. These low rates are cheaper

[14:12] than my mortgage.

[14:12] >> What about your family?

[14:14] >> They're going to love your house.

[14:15] Thanks, Chief.

[14:16] >> Wake up on the bright side at Lintita in

[14:18] Sweets with rates from $59. Lita.

[14:21] >> Fox Tuesday is all new. First, a night

[14:23] of rock and the top four are feeling the

[14:25] heat. To get this close and not make it

[14:27] is simply devastating.

[14:29] >> American Idol. fan. With only two

[14:31] episodes left, expect the unexpected.

[14:34] >> Hello, Walter. It's time to go. Only

[14:37] Fringe Tuesday at 8 on Fox 12 Oregon.

[14:46] >> It's happened again. More sensitive

[14:48] documents with personal information

[14:50] found dumped in a public recycling bin.

[14:52] Tonight, the Fox 12 investigators are

[14:54] trying to figure out how they got there.

[14:55] People who live at the Spencer House

[14:57] apartment complex in Beaverton say their

[14:59] private information was just left out in

[15:01] the open and they blame the apartment

[15:03] management. KPTV's Mark Ross has a story

[15:05] you'll see only on 12.

[15:08] >> Absolutely enraging. I was just

[15:10] completely enraged.

[15:12] >> That's how James Lynville describes the

[15:14] reaction he had last Tuesday.

[15:15] >> The potential is just incredibly awful.

[15:19] Completely awful.

[15:20] >> The potential damage, he says, from

[15:22] identity theft from documents like

[15:24] these. You think that they they might

[15:26] realize, hey, this is not the right

[15:28] thing to do.

[15:29] >> Lynville and his wife say James found

[15:31] piles of papers in this recycling bin

[15:33] and unlocked public container sitting

[15:35] just off the side street in their

[15:37] apartment complex.

[15:38] >> This was the final straw. This was it.

[15:40] Somebody's got to take a stand.

[15:41] >> Neighbors say they took pictures of the

[15:43] documents as soon as they found them.

[15:45] They say it looked like everything was

[15:46] just waiting for an ID thief to swipe.

[15:48] >> Immigration numbers, social security

[15:50] numbers, people's names, address, phone

[15:52] numbers, everything. We saw pictures of

[15:54] what looked like bank statements and

[15:56] rental applications during our

[15:57] investigation.

[15:59] So, we spoke to members of the on-site

[16:01] management team and the apartment's

[16:03] parent company to Alton Valley Housing

[16:05] Partners. The acting executive director

[16:07] told us the company is investigating how

[16:09] the papers ended up in the recycling

[16:11] bin. In fact, they're looking into the

[16:13] possibility that someone broke into the

[16:14] office and stole the documents. Managers

[16:17] tell Fox 12 the papers found last

[16:19] Tuesday are safe, but many are worried

[16:21] that more important paperwork may be out

[16:23] there in the hands of ID thieves.

[16:25] Tonight, the director says the TVHP's

[16:27] highest priority is that neighbors

[16:29] should trust that their documents should

[16:31] be secure and should be shredded. But

[16:33] neighbors say most people here might not

[16:35] know that their information may have

[16:37] been compromised. Tonight, they want the

[16:39] company to tell all tenants what

[16:41] happened so they can check their

[16:42] accounts and their credit scores.

[16:44] >> Scary. It really is. We're trying to

[16:47] protect ourselves from people stealing

[16:49] our identification.

[16:50] >> And fear is why some neighbors say

[16:52] people here are afraid to speak up.

[16:54] >> They've got us scared that we might lose

[16:56] our housing or be kicked out if we speak

[16:58] up for ourselves. This is not right.

[17:00] Well, we're tired of being scared and

[17:02] pushed around.

[17:03] >> But there's no doubt that this happened.

[17:04] You saw it.

[17:05] >> Well, yeah, absolutely. I got pictures

[17:07] of it.

[17:08] >> Mark Ross, the 10:00 news. Police are

[17:10] looking for more information tonight

[17:12] after cops say that they found an

[17:14] assistant basketball coach at a local

[17:16] high school with a teenage student. Now,

[17:18] somebody reported a suspicious car on

[17:20] Southwest 15th Street near Hensley Road

[17:23] last night about 10:00. Troutdale police

[17:25] say they found an assistant girls

[17:27] basketball coach from Centennial High

[17:29] School in the back seat of the car with

[17:31] a 17-year-old student. No arrests were

[17:34] made. The case is still under

[17:36] investigation. Prosecutors want to use

[17:38] previous crimes as evidence against the

[17:40] man accused of killing Brooke Wilberger.

[17:42] The 19-year-old college student

[17:43] disappeared from Corvalis in 2004. Now,

[17:46] Joel Courtourtney is charged with

[17:48] kidnapping, rape, and aggravated murder

[17:50] in her case. Two women appeared at a

[17:52] pre-trial hearing today to describe how

[17:54] Courtney sexually assaulted them in the

[17:56] past. But the defense says their

[17:58] testimony should not be admissible in

[17:59] the murder trial.

[18:01] >> We're opposing them. It's really not a

[18:02] question whether they're harmful or not.

[18:04] We want to make sure that this case is

[18:06] tried fairly and and it should be tried

[18:08] on the merits of each individual case,

[18:11] not

[18:12] combining cases.

[18:15] >> The DA offered Courtney a plea deal last

[18:17] fall if he lead them to Wilberger's

[18:19] body. He refused and the prosecution is

[18:21] now seeking the death penalty.

[18:24] >> Well, tonight the economic crisis seems

[18:26] to have given enrollment a big boost at

[18:28] Portland Community College. The school

[18:30] says springterm enrollment numbers have

[18:32] jumped 10% compared to last spring, that

[18:35] is the largest increase in years. And

[18:37] its emergency services department, which

[18:39] includes the basic EMT class, grew

[18:41] nearly 40% this spring. Portland Meadows

[18:44] may soon change hands. Tonight, the

[18:45] venue's owner, Magna Entertainment, is

[18:47] waiting for an answer after asking a

[18:49] bankruptcy judge for approval to sell

[18:51] the Portland site. The company owns

[18:53] numerous other assets across the US that

[18:55] could also go up on the auction block.

[18:58] Sad news for local lacrosse fans. The

[19:00] lumberjacks are saying goodbye to

[19:01] Portland. Today, the team announced this

[19:03] will be the last season in the Rose

[19:05] City. KPTV's Matt Smith joins us now

[19:07] live with that story. Matt.

[19:08] >> Well, Shauna, to be honest, the

[19:09] announcement doesn't come as a complete

[19:10] surprise. The list of fringe sport teams

[19:13] that have played in Portland is deep.

[19:14] The Portland Fire, the Portland Prowers,

[19:16] the Portland Pride, the Portland Forest

[19:18] Dragons. I mean, it's a long list. And

[19:20] like all of those teams, the Lumberjacks

[19:21] are packing up after just a handful of

[19:23] seasons. In reality, over the past four

[19:26] years, the Jacks have always drawn some

[19:27] pretty good crowds. But with just eight

[19:30] home games a year, an expensive Rose

[19:32] Garden lease, and low ticket prices, the

[19:34] economics just didn't add up.

[19:36] Lumberjacks vice president Brian Silcott

[19:38] says the ownership group is now having a

[19:40] difficult time funding the team. The

[19:42] owners have until June 1st to notify the

[19:45] league whether they will relocate, sell

[19:46] the team, or simply fold. On one hand,

[19:49] it's an unfortunate loss for the

[19:51] lacrosse community. The sport is growing

[19:53] fast at the high school level and the

[19:55] lumberjacks have some of the best

[19:56] players in the world. On the flip side,

[19:58] like any other group, sports fans are

[20:00] affected by this economy and second tier

[20:02] sports like indoor lacrosse will always

[20:04] be some of the first to take a hit.

[20:06] Reporting live, Matt Smith, the 10:00

[20:08] news. Still ahead tonight, new details

[20:09] about the flu outbreak in Oregon.

[20:11] >> We will break down which schools will be

[20:12] open tomorrow and which ones are closed.

[20:15] >> Also, if drinking and driving gets you a

[20:17] DUI, what do you get for drinking and

[20:19] then riding a horse? How one man learned

[20:21] the hard way that even those two do not

[20:23] mix.

[20:24] >> A foul ball makes a beline for a fan at

[20:26] a baseball game, but his reaction is

[20:29] probably more memorable than anything

[20:31] else.

[20:32] >> And we sure didn't get the strong south

[20:33] wind here in the metro area this

[20:34] evening, but the effect is the same. The

[20:36] temperatures going up. That's our high

[20:37] for the day of 57°. Well, warmer, drier,

[20:40] kind of calmer may coming up in the

[20:41] 7-day forecast.

[23:54] A man already in jail could be in more

[23:56] trouble after cops say he assaulted a

[23:58] deputy. Larry Land is accused of

[24:00] attacking Deputy Don Hathaway early

[24:02] Sunday morning at the Multma County

[24:03] Jail. Sheriff's office says that Landy

[24:05] got frustrated when nobody would accept

[24:07] a collect call from him. Authorities say

[24:09] Landy then ran into the deputy's work

[24:11] area where he grabbed her hair and hit

[24:13] her in the head and face. Doctors

[24:15] treated that deputy at a local hospital.

[24:18] Police in Mcmminville are looking for a

[24:20] dangerous predator tonight. They say

[24:21] that a cougar may have attacked

[24:23] somebody's pet over the weekend on West

[24:26] Second Street. This is a file shot of a

[24:28] cougar here. The pet survived. The

[24:30] cougar got away. If anyone notices

[24:32] cougar tracks, though, or other signs of

[24:34] the big cat in that area, you're asked

[24:35] to call McMinnville police or the Oregon

[24:38] Department of Fish and Wildlife.

[24:42] >> We have new details for you tonight on

[24:44] the wolves blamed for killing Oregon

[24:46] livestock. Wildlife officials say they

[24:48] have now released a young wolf, the wolf

[24:50] they trapped. The wolf now wears a radio

[24:52] collar that will trigger special alarms

[24:54] that can be set up around herds and then

[24:56] they'll go off and scare off the wolf.

[24:58] Officials found the predator just a few

[25:00] miles away from the eastern Oregon ranch

[25:02] where this video was taken last month.

[25:04] Ranchers think the wolves killed at

[25:06] least a dozen lambs there in just a few

[25:09] days.

[25:12] Well, our brand new beach cam got a

[25:13] little workout this afternoon. The sand

[25:18] though on the beach coming up for

[25:20] tomorrow. We'll talk about that in the

[29:20] >> More local schools are closing their

[29:21] doors as the H1N1 flu outbreak spreads.

[29:24] >> Tonight, the number of cases in Oregon

[29:25] stands at 17. School administrators say

[29:27] they are not taking any chances,

[29:29] choosing to shut down instead of risking

[29:31] more kids getting sick. KPTV's Kevin

[29:33] Kawari is following all of these

[29:35] developments and joins us live now with

[29:36] the story. Kevin.

[29:37] >> Right. Well, well, six of the confirmed

[29:38] cases are in Multma County. There are

[29:40] four in Lane and Pulk counties, two in

[29:42] Washington County, and one in Umatillaa.

[29:45] But schools aren't waiting for

[29:46] confirmation. If kids have symptoms that

[29:48] could be H1N1, many of them are shutting

[29:51] down. Most schools in the Forest Grove

[29:52] district were closed today and will stay

[29:54] closed tomorrow. That includes Emmas

[29:56] Christian and Forest Grove. Now things

[29:58] are worse at Cornelius Elementary.

[30:00] They're closed all week. And at Central

[30:02] School District in Pulk County, classes

[30:03] are also closed for the rest of the

[30:05] week. Students are also being asked to

[30:07] stay away from playgrounds and also away

[30:10] from each other as a precaution. Some

[30:12] students we spoke with have mixed

[30:13] feelings about having to take the next

[30:15] week off.

[30:17] >> Just stay inside and um help my mom

[30:20] around the house.

[30:21] >> Are you washing your hands?

[30:22] >> Yes.

[30:22] >> You doing that more than you used to?

[30:24] Yes.

[30:26] >> Well, Forest Grove administrators will

[30:28] decide tomorrow whether they plan to

[30:29] cancel more days districtwide this week.

[30:32] The decision depends on test results and

[30:34] whether investigators discover more

[30:36] possible cases of the flu. Reporting

[30:38] live tonight, Kevin Kawari, the 10:00

[30:40] news. US officials uh with the health

[30:42] department say tonight that the H1N1

[30:44] virus that sparked all these concerns

[30:46] may not be any more dangerous than the

[30:48] regular flu. The World Health

[30:50] Organization says the most recent flu

[30:52] has been blamed for 26 deaths, 25 of

[30:55] them in Mexico, one in the US. And there

[30:57] are still concerns that the virus could

[30:59] return in the fall in the typical flu

[31:01] season as a stronger strain. You can

[31:04] rely on Fox 12 to bring you up to the

[31:05] minute school closures and any delays

[31:07] that may come from this flu outbreak.

[31:09] And if anything changes overnight, we'll

[31:11] be sure and bring it to you tomorrow

[31:12] morning on Good Day Oregon starting

[31:13] bright and early at 4:30. A local man's

[31:16] facing a handful of charges after

[31:17] deputies say his blood alcohol level was

[31:19] three times the legal limit. Cops say

[31:22] Mandanda Moongo crashed into a bus

[31:24] yesterday morning at 185th in Alexander

[31:26] in Beaverton. You can see from these

[31:28] pictures his car was wedged under the

[31:30] bus. Deputies say they found him blocks

[31:33] away from the scene because he took off.

[31:35] This is Moango's fourth DUI arrest since

[31:38] 2006. He's currently on probation. They

[31:41] say his blood alcohol level was. 26 and

[31:43] in Oregon the limit is 0.08.

[31:47] Tonight we're hearing from the man

[31:48] inside one of the cars hit by Mayor Sam

[31:50] Adams. Portland police say the mayor was

[31:51] in a minor accident in a parking lot in

[31:53] the Jansen Beach area. It happened

[31:55] around 6:00 last night. Police say the

[31:57] mayor hit two cars. Police say he didn't

[32:00] show any signs of being intoxicated.

[32:02] That's the reason they did not test his

[32:04] levels of blood alcohol levels. And Ryan

[32:06] Red, the uh man in one car that received

[32:08] heavy damage released this statement. He

[32:11] says, "After the accident, I went to the

[32:12] emergency room to make sure I did not

[32:14] need further medical treatment and was

[32:16] released soon afterwards with no major

[32:18] injuries. I interacted briefly with

[32:20] Mayor Adams as we exchanged insurance

[32:22] information. I look forward to resolving

[32:24] this matter with his insurance company

[32:26] and have no further comment."

[32:29] In news across the Northwest tonight, a

[32:31] man is in a Medford jail tonight,

[32:32] accused of giving a girl alcohol and

[32:34] drugs and then sexually assaulting her.

[32:37] Medford police arrested Devon Xstrand

[32:40] Saturday night. A 17-year-old girl told

[32:42] police that she went to a party at his

[32:43] house. She says he provided marijuana

[32:45] and alcohol to her and three other teens

[32:48] or rather other teens. Extrin is now

[32:50] being held on $2 million bail. Police in

[32:54] Grants Pass have their hands full

[32:56] tonight investigating a fight that may

[32:57] have been connected to white

[32:58] supremacists. Police arrested 10 people

[33:00] Saturday night, including six kids as

[33:02] young as 12 years old. Police say the

[33:05] fight started when someone yelled at

[33:07] three people on bikes. Up to 20 people

[33:09] were involved with some yelling racial

[33:11] slurs and giving the Nazi salutes. Some

[33:13] of those arrested are charged now with

[33:15] hate crimes.

[33:17] >> A time of healing for people who've lost

[33:19] loved ones at sea. People across the

[33:21] nation gathered at Seattle's Fisherman

[33:23] Terminal over the weekend to remember

[33:24] those who've died. A boat sank last

[33:27] October off Alaska's Illutian Islands.

[33:29] Of the 11 crew members on board, only

[33:31] four survived. And for a Camas family,

[33:34] the loss is especially great.

[33:37] >> It's a dayto-day emotions run the gamut

[33:39] from rock solid to just want to go hide

[33:42] and cry every day.

[33:45] >> Families say the memorial provides them

[33:46] a place where they can feel they can

[33:48] connect with their lost loved ones.

[33:51] Dozens of lucky women got a free

[33:53] makeover or haircut in downtown Seattle.

[33:55] The Sassoon Salon offered $10,000 worth

[33:58] of free services to members of the

[34:00] military and their families. One

[34:02] military wife said, "A treat like this

[34:03] is just so nice when loved ones are

[34:05] away."

[34:06] >> So, not having him, you know, be home

[34:08] and hearing what he has to go through, I

[34:10] kind of I really feel for him.

[34:12] >> It was the first time the USO has teamed

[34:14] up with a salon, but they hope to do it

[34:16] again.

[34:20] >> Fox is committed to helping you

[34:22] understand the transition to digital

[34:24] television. By federal law, TV stations

[34:26] across the country, including KPTV and

[34:28] our sister station KPDX, will be turning

[34:31] off our analog signals by June 12th. And

[34:34] our special report, Understanding the

[34:36] Digital Transition, is going to air

[34:37] tonight at 11:00, right after the 10:00

[34:40] news.

[34:43] Well, the weather is creating problems

[34:45] across the nation tonight. Heavy rain in

[34:46] Oklahoma is being blamed for the

[34:48] drowning of one woman who drove her car

[34:50] past some barriers. An older man also

[34:53] died when the water swept him under.

[34:55] More rain is expected there this week.

[34:57] The power is back on in Atlanta tonight

[34:59] after some wild weather. The storm

[35:01] knocked out power to about 10,000

[35:03] customers. There have been no reports of

[35:05] any injuries.

[35:09] >> Chie meteorologist Mark Nelson joins us

[35:11] now with a check of the forecast. I was

[35:12] thinking, oh yeah, it's a perfect

[35:14] January day out there.

[35:15] >> It was. But did you notice the rain was

[35:17] a little warmer?

[35:18] >> Uh, yeah, maybe by about 10 degrees. It

[35:20] was warmer, but it was more like a

[35:22] winter storm. Yeah. And tomorrow, that

[35:24] means we only go uphill tomorrow in May.

[35:25] You can't stay like this for day after

[35:26] day. So, tomorrow's just showers and

[35:28] sunbasmer.

[35:29] Not much of any wind either. Let's take

[35:30] a look outside right now. We still have

[35:32] showers around here and there, but right

[35:34] now temporarily in downtown Portland,

[35:36] uh, we are dry. That's temporary though.

[35:37] I see some showers showing up on radar.

[35:39] So, let's go right to it. Uh, we've been

[35:40] dry here for a couple hours. Actually,

[35:42] more than a couple hours. It's 10:30. I

[35:43] think it was about uh 7:30 when we went

[35:45] dry here in the middle of town. Still

[35:47] some rain across the North Cascades into

[35:49] North Central Oregon. You can always use

[35:50] the rain there. And then down into

[35:52] central Oregon and also some showers

[35:54] over the coast range right here in town.

[35:55] As I said, we're just starting to see a

[35:57] few showers show up from the west again.

[35:58] Looks like between Hillsbor, well,

[36:00] actually right about over Aloha and then

[36:01] up towards Bethany. Some showers there.

[36:04] And there are more off to the west here.

[36:06] And some of these will make it over the

[36:07] coast range and into the valleys here.

[36:09] So off and on showers coming up for

[36:11] tonight. We're done with the heavy rain.

[36:13] Boy, it sure came down heavily briefly

[36:14] there. Just sheets of rain. I got stuck

[36:16] in it going out to lunch. But um you

[36:18] know what? We haven't had many really

[36:19] rainy days. By that we define that as a/

[36:22] inch of rain or more in one calendar

[36:23] day. We've only had 10 days like this

[36:26] since the rainy season started last

[36:28] October. Year before last winter, winter

[36:31] of uh 200708. We had more than double

[36:34] that number. So we had a much wetter

[36:36] winter last year than this year. We just

[36:38] haven't had many rainy days. We aren't

[36:39] really used to it. Uh most likely in the

[36:41] month of May, we don't tend to have days

[36:43] like this. So we probably won't have

[36:45] another one coming up. Now, currently

[36:46] it's pretty mild, as I said, with that

[36:48] south wind kicking in. Things warmed up

[36:49] into the 50s. So, we're going to stay

[36:50] mild tonight. We'll stay right around

[36:52] 50. We've got a south wind blowing here

[36:54] in the valley, but just 10 to 20 mph.

[36:56] Even at Newport in Atoria, where the

[36:58] wind was stronger earlier, the wind has

[36:59] died down quite a bit. So, tonight

[37:01] around 50° coming up here in Portland.

[37:04] This was quite a storm though, man. This

[37:05] thing just wrapped up like a cinnamon

[37:06] roll. You see it there? See the center

[37:08] moving off to the north. Here we are in

[37:10] Portland and then into Seattle, western

[37:12] Washington. here. As it moved north, it

[37:14] pulled up the southerntherly wind. The

[37:16] track of it was just far enough

[37:17] offshore, though that we didn't get

[37:18] damaging winds here in the valley. We

[37:20] didn't expect damaging wind, but I

[37:21] expected a little bit more wind. I

[37:22] thought maybe we'd see gust of 30, 35,

[37:24] 40, but we didn't even get that. It was

[37:26] just too far offshore if you want to get

[37:28] a good windstorm here in the valley,

[37:29] which most of us don't want. Okay,

[37:31] here's the forecast. Rain cloud

[37:33] forecast. Still a westerly jetream.

[37:35] Still looks well kind of like January on

[37:37] Wednesday morning here. So, showers

[37:38] tomorrow, some steady rain Wednesday. I

[37:40] think on Thursday things will start to

[37:41] die down. So, we got Tuesday, Wednesday,

[37:44] and Thursday looking wet. And then

[37:46] Thursday afternoon into Friday and

[37:48] Saturday, things really do improve as we

[37:49] head towards the weekend. Back to more

[37:51] typical, partly cloudy May weather for

[37:53] tomorrow east side. Just a few light

[37:54] showers. Not much moisture is going to

[37:55] make it east of the Cascades for

[37:57] tomorrow. So, uh it looks like we will

[37:58] see good conditions over there. 38 at

[38:00] Government Camp, 32 at Timberline, 56 at

[38:03] Welches for a high temperature. And then

[38:05] west of the Cascades, looks like a

[38:07] little bit warmer tomorrow. Temperatures

[38:08] right around 60. Showers, sun breaks, a

[38:10] bit of a southwesterly breeze.

[38:11] considerably breezy, but nothing

[38:12] unusual. It is spring. We do tend to

[38:14] have breezy southwesterly winds behind

[38:16] cold fronts in the month of May. 58

[38:19] degrees at Gresian tomorrow, 57 at

[38:21] Sandy. Here in the city, showers, some

[38:23] sun breaks, a much brighter day

[38:24] tomorrow. The weather will kind of come

[38:25] and go instead of just being that solid

[38:27] muck. And look for a high temperature

[38:28] right around 60°. 7-day forecast. Then,

[38:31] as I said, showers continue Wednesday.

[38:32] Maybe Wednesday if we get enough uh

[38:33] lifting in the atmosphere. Could have a

[38:35] thunderstorm. Then Thursday, just a few

[38:37] light showers. And notice temperatures

[38:38] go uphill, just partly cloudy probably

[38:40] Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. And if we

[38:42] get lucky, Monday could stay dry as

[38:43] well. But in general, uh it looks much

[38:45] more like May here for the latter part

[38:46] of the week. Of course, you can always

[38:47] check out live streaming radar and

[38:49] instant desktop weather at kpv.com.

[38:54] We are working hard in tonight's final

[38:56] cut to bring you stories you've probably

[38:57] never heard of before, like the cowboy

[38:59] arrested for DUI while on his horse.

[39:02] Even if you've watched baseball games

[39:04] your whole life, chances are you've

[39:06] never seen a reaction to a foul ball

[39:09] like the one this fan had. And you've

[39:11] heard of the ban on toys that contain

[39:13] lead. But I bet you never thought that

[39:15] ban would apply to motorcycles. See how

[39:18] some worry the new law could kill a

[39:20] popular business. The final cut is next.

[42:47] >> Stand by the final cut in 3 2 1. kill

[42:50] him.

[42:51] >> And the final cut begins with news

[42:52] across America tonight in a murder

[42:53] suicide mystery out of Florida. Deputies

[42:56] there say that a man killed his wife and

[42:57] children before killing himself last

[42:59] night. His 13-year-old son though was

[43:01] able to escape after apparently getting

[43:03] chased through the garage. Tonight,

[43:05] police though say they have no suicide

[43:07] note, no motive for those murders. You

[43:10] heard a couple of shots and then it

[43:12] stopped and then it sounded like it was

[43:14] moving and then we heard a few more

[43:17] shots, you know, like cuz it was

[43:19] probably eight or nine shots and then we

[43:21] heard the last shot.

[43:23] >> Detectives say that father fired several

[43:25] shots at the boy who was able to escape.

[43:27] That boy was able to make it to safety

[43:29] to a neighbor's house. He is now with

[43:31] other family members.

[43:32] >> The final cut heads to Chicago now where

[43:34] an autopsy is revealing more about the

[43:36] shocking death of a teenage boy. Alex

[43:38] Ariana was found dead on Saturday. The

[43:40] boy had been beaten and dragged to an

[43:42] abandoned home and then his body was set

[43:44] on fire. An autopsy reveals he actually

[43:46] died from a gunshot to the head. Family

[43:49] members think gang members killed him

[43:51] because he wouldn't join. The family had

[43:53] already moved once to try to avoid the

[43:55] gang.

[43:56] >> He pulled them out for his safety and

[43:58] obviously that was the right thing to

[43:59] do, but obviously that's happening.

[44:03] >> Police say the 10th grader had no

[44:04] criminal history. People in the area say

[44:06] the house where the boy's body was found

[44:08] is a gang hangout.

[44:10] >> Well, if drinking and driving results in

[44:12] a DUI, what do you call it when a

[44:13] suspected drunk driver is on horseback?

[44:16] Well, even if such a violation doesn't

[44:18] have an official name, it does come with

[44:20] a fine. A Colorado man recently found

[44:23] that out the hard way. It happened at a

[44:24] suburban strip mall where a cowboy and

[44:26] his horse were pulled over by police.

[44:29] The officer gave the man a sobriety test

[44:31] and some onlookers say they knew that

[44:33] man was in trouble.

[44:35] Oh, it looked like a disaster. I mean,

[44:37] he couldn't walk a straight line or

[44:39] anything. He was really not doing well.

[44:41] I was like, "Well, he's going to fail

[44:42] that test."

[44:43] >> Well, the man was given a traffic ticket

[44:45] and a $25 fine. The officer involved

[44:48] says he's never ticketed a man on

[44:50] horseback before.

[44:51] >> Well, what would you do if you found

[44:53] more than 100,000 bucks just lying on

[44:55] the ground? Well, a Texas woman didn't

[44:57] think twice about doing the right thing.

[44:58] She says she was driving to an ATM when

[45:00] she accidentally made a $120,000

[45:04] discovery.

[45:05] >> I noticed what appeared to be a plastic

[45:07] bag, so I just simply drove over it. As

[45:09] I'm looking through my rearview mirror,

[45:11] I realized that it wasn't a plastic bag,

[45:13] that it was shaped very differently and

[45:15] there was definitely something solid in

[45:17] there.

[45:18] >> Oh, yeah. It was very solid with a tag

[45:20] on it that read $120,000.

[45:23] But she says she didn't even think

[45:24] twice. She immediately called the

[45:25] police. And if you are curious, her

[45:27] husband thinks she did the right thing.

[45:29] Police are investigating where the money

[45:31] came from. If no one claims it, she gets

[45:32] to keep it.

[45:34] >> Now to news caught on camera and it's a

[45:36] movie stunt that turns into a real life

[45:38] drama. Check this out. A Ferrari is

[45:39] about to spin out of control here. It

[45:42] will jump the curb and then crash right

[45:44] into a Times Square restaurant. This

[45:46] injures several people. Police say all

[45:48] this happened during a big time

[45:49] Hollywood movie shoot earlier this

[45:51] morning. One bystander was knocked to

[45:52] the ground when a lamp post fell on top

[45:54] of her, but no one had any

[45:56] life-threatening injuries. Now, the film

[45:57] that they were shooting stars Nicholas

[45:59] Cage and is set to be released next

[46:02] year. Caught on camera tonight, bad guys

[46:04] can run, but they can't hide. Police in

[46:05] Ohio chased two men at speeds of more

[46:08] than 80 mph after they allegedly robbed

[46:10] a gas station and shot a store clerk.

[46:13] Cops arrested the suspects after the

[46:15] crash. Doctors took the injured clerk to

[46:17] a hospital where she is expected to

[46:19] recover. All right, a foul ball was

[46:21] enough to scare the popcorn out of one

[46:23] baseball fan. It happened yesterday at a

[46:25] Texas Rangers game. A foul ball heading

[46:28] straight back caused the fan to toss all

[46:30] that popcorn right into the air. Now,

[46:32] you'll notice there is a safety screen,

[46:34] so it wouldn't have hit him, but it

[46:36] didn't matter. His reaction drew

[46:38] laughter and also applause from the

[46:40] crowd.

[46:45] A law making it illegal to sell toxic

[46:47] toys in America has also made it nearly

[46:49] impossible to buy new motorcycles

[46:51] designed for kids. Authorities say

[46:53] because motorcycles and ATVs also

[46:56] contain lead, they've been banned from

[46:58] local dealerships. Businesses and

[47:01] families believe the law could

[47:02] eventually kill off-road riding. KPTV's

[47:05] David Wilson explains.

[47:08] Kids at Portland International Raceway,

[47:12] they say they live for the thrill of the

[47:14] ride.

[47:16] >> You get to go fast and that's really

[47:18] fun.

[47:19] >> 10-year-old Ryan Martin races his dirt

[47:21] bike every Thursday night at PI. The

[47:24] little boy has sponsors and he wins

[47:26] frequently.

[47:28] >> Yeah, I want to be a professional. But

[47:30] the government crackdown on children's

[47:31] dirt bikes and ATVs because of possible

[47:34] lead exposure could leave Ryan and other

[47:36] kids who love to ride sitting idally in

[47:39] the dust.

[47:40] >> So I think the bill was probably a good

[47:42] idea in the beginning to protect babies

[47:44] from lead and their toys, but the kids

[47:46] aren't sucking on the motorcycles or

[47:48] licking them.

[47:49] >> Ryan's mom says the ban on children's

[47:51] products containing lead means families

[47:54] can't buy new motorcycles or ATVs for

[47:56] kids under 12. They can't even purchase

[47:59] parts for what they already own. In

[48:01] fact, because clothing and safety gear

[48:03] could also contain lead, some retail

[48:05] shops won't sell that either.

[48:08] >> And you know what's the safety impact of

[48:09] not being able to get replacement parts

[48:11] when you need it, like brake pads for

[48:13] your kid's bike or new safety gear if

[48:16] their gear cracks?

[48:18] >> Aaron's small son, Trevor, also races.

[48:21] says he's not necessarily against the

[48:23] new law, but believes the Consumer

[48:25] Product Safety Commission has done a bad

[48:27] job implementing it.

[48:29] >> Educate the parents and everybody else

[48:30] that there might be a concern, then have

[48:32] a plan to phase it out or change it, but

[48:35] you know, don't prevent uh people from

[48:38] being able to get replacement protective

[48:40] gear. But the hard part is we people got

[48:42] people coming in to try to buy something

[48:43] and we just got to tell them we can't

[48:44] sell it to them. Jerry Lince of

[48:46] Beaverton Honda Yamaha Suzuki says his

[48:48] dealership has taken all of its small

[48:50] motorcycles and ATVs off the floor after

[48:53] manufacturers advised them that the

[48:55] government could find the shop for

[48:57] selling the motorcycles.

[49:00] Now, dozens of brand new motorcycles and

[49:02] ATVs designed for children under 12 are

[49:05] now tucked away in a nearby warehouse.

[49:08] >> Well, it's a big part of our business in

[49:09] the fact that it's how we grow people

[49:11] into the business. Lince says if small

[49:13] kids can't get new motorcycles and ATVs,

[49:16] the family sport of off-road riding may

[49:19] die a slow death. When you start looking

[49:21] at it though from a family aspect, if I

[49:24] lose that family unit coming in to buy,

[49:27] then I lose a lot. I mean, if they

[49:28] decide, okay, we're going to take up

[49:30] golf. And racing fans say it's important

[49:32] for kids who want to compete

[49:34] professionally to get a new bike every

[49:36] year. Ryan Martin got his just days

[49:38] before the February deadline, but next

[49:41] year, young racers like Ryan may have to

[49:43] put used parts on their old bikes, and

[49:45] that they say is not good for the sport

[49:48] of racing.

[49:49] >> It's not a toy. It's a It's a a

[59:29] >> How to get a coupon from the government

[59:30] in case you need some new equipment. Fox

[59:33] 12 wants to help you understand the

[59:36] digital TV transition.

[59:38] >> Well, thank you for joining us. I'm

[59:40] Kevin Kawari and let's start at the

[59:42] beginning. What is digital television?

[59:44] Well, digital television or DTV is an

[59:46] advanced broadcasting technology that

[59:48] offers better picture and sound quality.

[59:51] Now, back in 1996, Congress authorized

[59:53] giving TV stations an additional channel

[59:55] so they could start broadcasting a

[59:57] digital signal while keeping their

[59:59] analog signals up and running. Well,

[60:01] those analog signals are going away on

[60:03] June 12th, which means if you're not set

[60:05] up to receive the digital signal, your

[60:07] TV could go dark. You might remember

[60:10] Congress initially set a deadline of

[60:12] February 17th for the end of analog

[60:14] broadcasting. But when surveys showed

[60:16] millions of Americans weren't ready to

[60:18] make the switch, lawmakers voted to

[60:20] delay that transition. Some TV stations

[60:23] stopped broadcasting analog in February.

[60:25] But Fox 12 and PDXTV listened to our

[60:28] viewers concerns and decided to hold off

[60:30] on making the switch until June 12th. As

[60:33] KPTV's Jim Hyde explains, it's part of

[60:35] our commitment to helping you understand

[60:38] the digital transition.

[60:41] A DTV signal would be nothing but snow

[60:44] on a set that's only receptive to analog

[60:46] broadcast.

[60:49] Operators at a phone bank like this one

[60:51] want to help those who have not

[60:52] installed the converter box become ready

[60:55] for DTV. Most Portland TV stations are

[60:57] joining a single phone bank and DTV help

[61:00] center. Train staff are manning the

[61:02] phones from 8 until 5. That center is

[61:04] located at OPB, but people in all

[61:06] cooperating stations are taking calls in

[61:08] their buildings, too.

[61:09] >> They didn't get their coupons, what kind

[61:11] of box to buy, um how to hook it up. The

[61:14] manual is not making sense. um it's

[61:16] hooked up correctly, but they're not

[61:18] getting any channels or they haven't

[61:20] scanned yet.

[61:21] >> It just plugs directly into the TV.

[61:23] >> Operators at the help center have been

[61:25] trained to walk you through the

[61:26] connecting process over the telephone.

[61:28] You can also come here to KPTV to see

[61:31] the DTV converter box setup.

[61:34] >> Many of them will come with a couple of

[61:35] different kinds of plugs. Right here,

[61:37] you've got an RCA type of plug and we

[61:40] had a

[61:41] different kind of coax cable plug. And

[61:43] so basically, you need to take whatever

[61:45] kind of plug you had in your TV and use

[61:47] that in your converter box.

[61:48] >> Delaying the change over to June 12th

[61:50] should help avoid consumer confusion.

[61:54] >> I'm just looking at it viewer by viewer

[61:55] to help um because they're going to need

[61:57] help before after June 12th.

[61:58] >> Jim Hyde, Fox 12, Oregon.

[62:01] >> Well, the Portland DTV Help Center

[62:02] hotline is 1 800241-8123.

[62:07] Now, we'll bring you that number again

[62:09] in case you don't have a pen and paper

[62:10] nearby. And you can also find out uh

[62:13] more information by going to our website

[62:15] that is kptv.com.

[62:17] So you might be wondering why why is the

[62:19] FCC making this nationwide switch with a

[62:22] conversion to an all digital signal

[62:24] frees up the airwaves which means

[62:26] there's more room for Wi-Fi services and

[62:29] new dedicated communication channels for

[62:31] emergency first responders. And you win

[62:33] too. Digital signals offer a crisper

[62:36] picture when you're watching TV. So mark

[62:39] your calendar. Fox 12 and PDXTV will

[62:41] shut off our analog signals on Friday,

[62:44] June 12th. It happens at 9:00 a.m. And

[62:47] that means we'll only be sending out our

[62:49] digital signal. So, if you're not

[62:50] equipped to see our digital signal, you

[62:52] need to take action. Now, you might be

[62:54] wondering how to tell whether you are

[62:56] ready for the end of analog broadcasts.

[62:58] Well, there are a few different ways to

[63:00] tell. First, if your TV was made after

[63:03] March 1st, 2007, it is equipped with a

[63:06] digital tuner. Those sets must be marked

[63:08] to let you know they contain digital

[63:11] tuners. Look for markings with words

[63:13] like integrated digital tuner or digital

[63:16] tuner builtin. Of course, you can refer

[63:18] to your TV manual for that information

[63:20] as well. One warning for you. If the set

[63:22] is labeled as digital or HDTV monitor or

[63:25] digital ready or HDTV ready, it may not

[63:29] contain a digital tuner. If that's the

[63:31] case, you'll need an overthe-air digital

[63:34] set top box to bring in that digital

[63:36] signal. Another way to know if your TV

[63:38] is ready for the end of analog is to

[63:40] test your set. Now, we've been

[63:41] broadcasting DTV tests for months to

[63:43] show you what happens when that analog

[63:45] signal goes away. And this is what it

[63:48] looks like. What we're going to do right

[63:50] now is we're going to turn off the

[63:51] analog broadcast signal here on PDX TV.

[63:54] See, there it went right there. Now, if

[63:55] you're seeing our broadcast right now,

[63:57] then your TV is all set for the

[63:58] transition. You don't have to do

[64:00] anything different than what you're

[64:01] doing right now for your TV to work

[64:04] during the switch.

[64:05] >> What? It's actually harder than it

[64:07] looks.

[64:07] >> And we'll continue running those tests

[64:08] to see if your TV is ready for the end

[64:10] of analog on both Fox12 and PDXTV. Go to

[64:13] kptv.com for a complete schedule of the

[64:16] upcoming tests. Now, if your TV goes to

[64:19] snow during those tests, you will need a

[64:21] converter box. That box makes digital

[64:23] programming viewable on older TVs. It

[64:26] also offers features you probably don't

[64:28] have right now, like a remote control

[64:29] with a guide feature that tells you what

[64:31] you're watching and tells you what's

[64:33] coming up next. For a list of stores

[64:35] that sell converter boxes, go to

[64:37] kptv.com and click on the digital

[64:39] countdown box that's on the main page.

[64:42] Also, the government is offering $40

[64:45] coupons to help you buy a converter box.

[64:47] Two coupons are available to any

[64:49] household, but they're only valid for 90

[64:51] days. So, when you get your coupons,

[64:53] look for the expiration date on them and

[64:56] use them right away. And if you already

[64:57] got coupons that expired before you

[64:59] could use them, the government has good

[65:01] news for you. We're also going to be

[65:04] able to use the first class mail system.

[65:06] And we're also going to be able to

[65:08] reissue coupons to consumers whose

[65:11] coupons expired before they were able to

[65:13] use them. And you can order your coupons

[65:15] by calling 1888dtv209.

[65:19] That number right there on your screen,

[65:20] or by going to this website, dtv209.gov.

[65:25] And we have all that information online

[65:27] at our website, kptv.com. And we'll

[65:30] bring it to you again during this show.

[65:32] Well, now that you know what the

[65:33] converter box does, and you should have

[65:35] a good idea as to whether you need one,

[65:37] we want to show you how simple they are

[65:38] to install. We checked in with the

[65:40] electronics experts at Fred Meyer to

[65:42] show us in real time just how easy

[65:44] installation is and how it can only take

[65:47] about 3 minutes.

[65:50] And what I want to show you today is

[65:51] just how easy it is to hook up. It's

[65:54] really simple. So, we'll kind of go

[65:55] through the steps. When you get your uh

[65:57] converter box out of your packaging,

[66:00] just go ahead and plug that in.

[66:02] Actually, leave let's leave it unplugged

[66:03] right at first. the antenna that you're

[66:05] using right now to pick up your signals.

[66:08] Uh just a standard VHF UHF antenna. Uh

[66:12] nothing special is needed, the same one

[66:14] you're using right now. You'll take that

[66:16] and unplug it from the back of your set

[66:18] that you had it in. Now, you're going to

[66:19] unplug it into the antenna input on the

[66:23] back of the converter box. And then from

[66:26] there, you're going to need a three-foot

[66:28] cable. And most all the converter boxes

[66:29] come with this three-foot cable. And

[66:31] you're going to plug that into the back

[66:33] of the TV, right into the RF connector.

[66:36] So, let's screw that into that. And then

[66:38] on the other end, you're going to bring

[66:41] it over here

[66:43] and put it into the antenna out. So, let

[66:46] me unplug this one so I can stir this

[66:47] one in here real quick.

[66:50] So, that gets in good and tight.

[66:55] We'll plug this in. Okay, that's all

[66:58] there is to it. Now, from this point, go

[67:01] ahead and turn on your TV, plug this in.

[67:08] You'll want to switch your television to

[67:09] either channel two or excuse me, channel

[67:11] 3 or channel 4. We're going to have it

[67:13] on channel 3, just where it's set right

[67:15] now, cuz you're not going to be using

[67:16] the tuner or anything on your television

[67:18] from this point. When you have the box,

[67:20] it comes with a remote control, and

[67:22] you're going to be using the digital

[67:23] tuner now from this point forward. Okay?

[67:26] So, you just turn the unit on.

[67:29] It'll come up here in a second.

[67:33] And then you want to hit the setup

[67:35] button. Once you hit that, you'll have

[67:38] this screen on here. You're going to go

[67:40] down. You can see right now it's on

[67:42] channel. And we already got the antenna.

[67:44] We want to go over here to uh let's see.

[67:48] Let's hit okay. Down here to autoscan. I

[67:52] can get down to it. There we go. And

[67:54] just hit okay at that point. and uh

[67:58] we'll go back.

[68:01] Okay. And right now it's scanning

[68:03] through all the signals that are

[68:05] available. And this is with just this

[68:07] little antenna.

[68:09] Takes just a few minutes to go through

[68:10] that.

[68:15] And little light will flash on where it

[68:16] says channel found. And that's picking

[68:19] up all the different channels that are

[68:20] available. Okay. From this point, it's

[68:22] all programmed in. It's ready to go. and

[68:24] you can just scan through the different

[68:26] channels that are available. You're

[68:27] going to have a lot more channels with

[68:29] this digital converter box than you did

[68:31] on analog. Um, so there's either two or

[68:35] three or up to four channels like um,

[68:37] you know, on where you used to be just

[68:39] getting one.

[68:41] And of course, we want to go up to our

[68:42] favorite channel up here. There we go.

[68:46] >> And you're set and ready to roll. It's

[68:48] as simple as that. All right. Well, once

[68:51] you are all hooked up, there is an

[68:52] important final step, and it's a step

[68:54] worth repeating. When you hook up the

[68:55] converter box, you can have it

[68:56] automatically scan for digital channels.

[68:59] In fact, if you're watching us now

[69:00] through a converter box, you probably

[69:02] notice the channel is 12-1 or 49-1. It's

[69:06] important that you rescan both when you

[69:08] hook up your box and after we stop

[69:11] broadcasting in analog on June 12th. If

[69:14] you don't, you might lose some of the

[69:16] stations you're used to getting,

[69:17] including Fox 12 and PDXTV. To rescan,

[69:20] hit the menu button on the remote that

[69:22] comes with your converter box. Choose

[69:24] the automatic or easy scan option and

[69:26] let the box find those digital channels

[69:29] for you. Well, the converter box may not

[69:31] solve every problem. Coming up, why some

[69:34] people may still have a hard time come

[69:35] June, even if they take steps to prevent

[69:38] it now. Plus, a new law will change the

[69:40] way you get rid of your TV and other

[69:42] electronics in case you decide to

[69:43] upgrade your set. What you need to know

[69:45] and how it'll have you living green. And

[69:49] what can you do to help people in our

[69:51] community keep their TVs on after analog

[69:53] signals disappear? Well, there are a lot

[69:56] of resources out there to help make
