[4:18] on 4. Today on Face the Nation, nine

[4:21] days until the election and the race is

[4:24] still anybody's to win. With the

[4:27] candidates out campaigning for the

[4:28] undecided votes and that important block

[4:31] women, the race remains virtually even.

[4:34] Will the huge numbers of new voters make

[4:37] the difference? And how are the swing

[4:38] states leaning? We'll ask a top

[4:41] representative for each campaign, Liz

[4:43] Cheney, a senior adviser on the Bush

[4:46] team, and Joe Lockhart, who advises

[4:49] Senator Kerry. Doyle McManis of the Los

[4:51] Angeles Times joins in the questioning.

[4:54] Then we'll have a Face the Nation 50th

[4:56] anniversary flashback about Pete Rose.

[5:00] Finally, I'll have a thought on the

[5:02] Boston Red Sox. But first, the last days

[5:05] of the presidential campaign on Face the

[5:08] Nation.

[5:16] >> Face the Nation with CBS News Chief

[5:19] Washington correspondent Bob Schaefer.

[5:22] And now from CBS News in Washington, Bob

[5:25] Sheaffer.

[5:27] >> And good morning again. Both our guests

[5:29] are in the studio today. Liz Cheney, who

[5:31] is a working mom, a mother of four, I

[5:34] believe, and a senior adviser on the

[5:36] Bush Cheney campaign. She's also, of

[5:38] course, vice president and Mrs. Cheny's

[5:40] daughter. Also here is a working dad,

[5:42] Joe Lockhart from the Kerry campaign.

[5:44] Joining in the questioning, another

[5:46] working dad. Are you a working

[5:47] grandfather yet?

[5:48] >> Oh, no, sir.

[5:49] >> Well, I'm a working grandfather here.

[5:51] Doyle McManus of the Los Angeles Times.

[5:53] Uh let's begin with you, Miss Cheney,

[5:55] and thank you very much for coming. And

[5:57] I want to start with this question.

[5:58] During the debate, when John Kerry

[6:00] mentioned your sister by name after I

[6:02] asked him if he and President Bush

[6:05] believe that homosexuality was a choice,

[6:08] brought up your sister, Mary's name.

[6:11] Your parents, to say the least, sort of

[6:12] went through the roof. A lot of other

[6:14] people took offense, but I can't find

[6:17] where anybody asked Mary Cheney what she

[6:20] thought about it. Was she offended?

[6:22] >> She was, Bob. Thanks for having me,

[6:23] first of all. You know, I think um we've

[6:25] all been pretty clear that we thought it

[6:27] was out of bounds. U Mary was uh angry

[6:29] herself about it. And I think, you know,

[6:32] many people watching that night, if you

[6:33] look at the polls afterwards, uh thought

[6:35] it was out of bounds as well for a

[6:37] candidate to use a child of one of his

[6:39] opponents to score political points.

[6:41] Made folks wonder what kind of a person

[6:42] would do that. Um, and I think it's

[6:44] become part of a pattern, unfortunately,

[6:47] where it looks like, uh, Senators Kerry

[6:49] and Edwards will say and do just about

[6:51] anything in these closing days of the

[6:52] campaign to get elected. We've seen it

[6:54] with, um, you know, the claim that if

[6:56] Senator Kerry were president,

[6:57] Christopher Reev would walk again. We've

[6:59] seen it with the scare tactics on social

[7:01] security and the draft. Uh, it's really,

[7:03] it's unfortunate. Um, but I think

[7:05] unfortunately it's part of a larger

[7:06] pattern we've seen.

[7:07] >> May I just ask you, why was she

[7:09] offended? She is openly gay. Uh, to what

[7:11] did she take offense? Well, the same

[7:13] thing that we all did that it was really

[7:14] exploitative that it was uh bringing her

[7:17] name into it uh to try to score some

[7:18] political points and it's really

[7:20] unprecedented. I think it's frankly the

[7:22] first time that's ever happened.

[7:23] >> Mr. Lockheart, um I must say that it did

[7:26] seem to put a rather harsh edge on what

[7:29] I thought was a fairly eloquent answer

[7:31] by Senator Kerry. Uh his answer to the

[7:34] question, uh why did he find it

[7:36] necessary to bring up her name? And in

[7:38] retrospect, do you think it was a

[7:39] mistake? Well, I don't think it was a

[7:41] mistake and I think it's unfortunate and

[7:43] we'll take the family at their word that

[7:44] they were offended by it. It's

[7:45] unfortunate, but what he was trying to

[7:47] do was make a broader point uh uh about

[7:50] tolerance. Uh but the specific point, I

[7:54] think, was in praise of uh the parenting

[7:56] of uh uh Dick and Lynch Cheney. And

[7:59] that's where John Kerry is. I've talked

[8:00] to him about this. That's the point he

[8:02] was trying to make. It picked up on an

[8:04] exchange in the debate just two or three

[8:06] days earlier uh in Cleveland where John

[8:08] Edwards said something very similar and

[8:10] the vice president thanked him. Uh maybe

[8:12] it was the fact that Dick Cheney wasn't

[8:13] there that sort of uh

[8:16] >> does he feel badly about it?

[8:17] >> Well, I think I think if uh he says

[8:20] something that is is meant as a

[8:22] compliment and two parents, whether they

[8:24] be the vice president or whether they be

[8:26] two parents who live in Peoria,

[8:27] Illinois, and they take it the wrong

[8:28] way, then of course uh it it was not

[8:30] received as intended. I'll tell you what

[8:33] though I I I think uh is wrong. Uh there

[8:36] was one of uh one of your colleagues in

[8:38] the campaign told the Washington Post or

[8:40] the New York Times that John Kerry had

[8:43] launched a vicious personal attack. It

[8:45] wasn't. I mean and that to me uh

[8:48] represents intolerance when people think

[8:50] that somehow when you talk openly about

[8:52] these things that that is that it is

[8:54] something wrong and it's an attack. It

[8:56] was not an attack and again if it was

[8:58] not received in the way it was intended

[8:59] then that is unfortunate. But the

[9:01] broader point uh I think still uh

[9:04] exists. Uh and uh the idea that both

[9:07] John Edwards and John Kerry think that

[9:08] they're good parents is is the bottom

[9:10] line.

[9:10] >> Can I just add one thing though? I think

[9:12] um the reason it was perceived as an

[9:14] attack was uh in part furthered by Mary

[9:16] Beth Cahill's comments, you know,

[9:18] calling Mary fair game, which doesn't

[9:20] fit into the whole notion.

[9:21] >> No, that was Listen, a lot of things a

[9:23] lot of things get twisted and taken out

[9:25] of context as time goes on. I watched

[9:26] that interview and it the interview was

[9:29] it was something along the line of you

[9:31] know since Vice President Chenny first

[9:32] brought this to the public's attention

[9:34] in the first place was it fair game to

[9:36] talk about it and her answer was yes. I

[9:38] mean, so I don't think she's talking

[9:40] about, you know, it's go back and look

[9:41] at the interview. That's what it says.

[9:43] And I think it says something about um,

[9:46] you know, a campaign that generally

[9:48] doesn't want to focus on what's going on

[9:50] here domestically, what's going on in

[9:52] the world that we constantly have these

[9:54] little things that get blown up and out

[9:56] of proportion and out of context. And

[9:58] the public is looking and saying, you

[9:59] know what, I don't have a job. Why are

[10:00] they talking about this?

[10:02] >> Miss Cheney, let me go to a related

[10:04] issue. and it's one of the few issues on

[10:06] which your dad disagrees with President

[10:08] Bush. President Bush favors an amendment

[10:10] to the federal constitution against uh

[10:13] same-sex marriage. Uh your father has

[10:16] said he thinks that the states uh ought

[10:18] to handle that matter. Oddly enough,

[10:19] Senator Kerry seems to agree with your

[10:21] father on that. What's your position?

[10:23] >> Well, I think what my dad has said has

[10:25] been that, you know, he does believe

[10:27] it's a matter that should be left to the

[10:28] states. It's what the president has

[10:29] said, too. But you've got a situation

[10:31] now where you've got activist judges in

[10:33] several states who are taking that

[10:35] decision away from the people in those

[10:36] states and um making it a situation

[10:39] where they're deciding from the bench

[10:40] rather than letting the people decide. I

[10:42] do agree with Joe in terms of the the

[10:45] fact that people in this country are

[10:46] concerned about other issues and we

[10:49] really are focused on the fact that you

[10:51] know people want to know who's going to

[10:52] keep them safe, who's going to keep this

[10:53] economy growing. looking at what this

[10:55] president's track record is and frankly

[10:57] looking at Senator K's track record and

[10:59] comparing the two. So, um, you know, I

[11:01] think we've we've we've said that we

[11:02] thought it was an inappropriate comment,

[11:04] an inappropriate remark, but, you know,

[11:06] at the end of the day, when people go

[11:07] into the ballot box, they're going to be

[11:09] voting based on this president's track

[11:10] record and keeping them safe and

[11:12] continuing to grow this economy and

[11:13] continuing to create jobs.

[11:14] >> But on the question of an amendment, you

[11:16] agree with President Bush rather than

[11:18] your dad or your

[11:19] >> I'm I agree with my father.

[11:22] Let's talk about uh the campaign right

[11:24] now.
