[0:00] Also playing defense, the famed future

[0:02] Hall of Fame pitcher Roger Clemens comes

[0:05] out throwing heat on the subject of

[0:07] steroids. From New Hampshire, NBC

[0:10] Nightly News begins now.

[0:13] [music]

[0:15] This is NBC Nightly News with Brian

[0:18] Williams.

[0:22] And good evening from Manchester, New

[0:24] Hampshire, where the voters of this

[0:26] state have the ability to make or break

[0:29] the hopes and dreams of several

[0:31] candidates for president. This is the

[0:33] home stretch for both political parties

[0:35] in this fiercely independent state. It's

[0:38] just the second contest of this election

[0:41] season, but because of the wideopen

[0:43] campaign underway for so many months, it

[0:46] feels already like the end of a long

[0:49] road. The candidates are tired, under

[0:51] great stress. This is when desperation

[0:54] can seep into the process. It seemed

[0:56] like it was all on display here in New

[0:58] Hampshire today. We spent a good part of

[1:00] this day behind the scenes with Senator

[1:02] Barack Obama. The new front runner going

[1:05] nonstop across this state today. We'll

[1:08] have a full report on that a bit later

[1:10] on. Our NBC News political team is

[1:12] deployed throughout this state. Tonight,

[1:14] we begin with the race for the

[1:16] Democratic nomination. and NBC's Andrea

[1:19] Mitchell. Andrea, good evening.

[1:22] >> Good evening. From a Hillary Clinton

[1:23] rally, a noisy rally confronted by the

[1:26] surge of support for Barack Obama. The

[1:28] Clinton campaign is trying to survive

[1:31] New Hampshire, get by New Hampshire, and

[1:34] then regroup for the primary still to

[1:36] come.

[1:37] >> And so wonderful.

[1:39] >> Clearly showing the strain this morning.

[1:41] Hillary Clint
