[0:03] beat the bridge starting September 16th.

[0:09] [music]

[0:10] On World News Tonight this Wednesday,

[0:11] Senator Jesse Helms of North Carolina

[0:14] trying to have it his way and getting it

[0:17] because no one [music] in Washington has

[0:18] mustered the power to back him off. The

[0:22] death and destruction that is possible

[0:24] when any of the nation's truckers fall

[0:26] asleep at the wheel. A new report says

[0:29] too many are not getting enough sleep.

[0:30] >> I was I was so tired where I was

[0:32] sleeping with my eyes open and I just

[0:34] watched myself drive off the road.

[0:36] >> And why are they catching all those new

[0:38] and different fish off the coast of

[0:40] California?

[0:42] It's the weather

[0:48] >> from ABC. This is World News Tonight

[0:51] with Peter Jennings.

[0:52] >> Good evening. We're going to begin

[0:53] tonight with the power of one man. And

[0:55] it's not often in politics that one man

[0:57] other than the president or the speaker

[0:58] of the House of Representatives can

[1:00] suddenly lay claim to the spotlight by

[1:02] using his power in such a raw way as

[1:04] Senator Jesse Helms has. In Washington

[1:07] tonight, the senior senator from North

[1:08] Carolina has got more people upset with

[1:11] him than usual. So, first we go to

[1:13] Capitol Hill where ABC's John Cochran

[1:15] reports on the senator and the Gulf War

[1:18] veterans.

[1:20] As long as most voters back in North

[1:21] Carolina like him, Jesse Helms does not

[1:24] care how the rest of the world feels.

[1:26] Who else would take on Gulf War

[1:28] veterans?

[1:29] >> If Senator Helm's legislation passes,

[1:32] then Gulf War veterans will be excluded

[1:35] from being able to file a claim
