[0:06] Christmas looking for exchanges and
[0:08] bargains. And a new chapter opens in the

[0:25] and this is Bob Schiffer reporting. Good
[0:27] evening. Well, it is the day after
[0:29] Christmas and all through the land, the
[0:30] merchants couldn't be happier because
[0:32] the economy at long last is looking a
[0:35] lot better, at least at the retail
[0:37] level. Linda Tyra was out talking to the
[0:39] store owners and the shoppers who were
[0:41] back in the stores again today. Here's
[0:43] her report.
[0:47] Santa finally delivered to the nation's
[0:49] retailers, granting them their Christmas
[0:51] wish. Shoppers came, saw, and charged up
[0:54] a storm, boosting sales by as much as 9%
[0:57] over a year ago. Sales haven't been this
[0:59] brisk since 1988.
[1:02] >> It's a good sign. People have not only
[1:03] money before Christmas, but they spend
[1:05] the money after Christmas.
[1:06] >> This is our strongest holiday selling uh
[1:09] in at least the last 3 years.
[1:11] >> Today, with Christmas over, shoppers
[1:13] raced back to the stores to scoop up
[1:15] parking spaces the way they scooped up
[1:17] bargains before Christmas. And once
[1:19] inside, they offered many happy returns.
[1:21] >> It's the wrong color, so we're going to
[1:24] get the right color.
[1:25] >> Exchanging presents they didn't want,
[1:27] and they took advantage of post
[1:29] Christmas sales.
[1:30] >> Oh, this is where the good sales are.
[1:31] 50% off. I was trying to catch some
[1:33] stuff at 50% off.
[1:34] >> The nation's retailers are wondering
[1:36] though, how long the glow from t
