[0:03] Breaking news out of the Middle East

[0:05] this morning. Israel launched new air

[0:07] strikes against Lebanon. It is the

[0:09] heaviest assault in 24 years in response

[0:12] to Hezbollah guerrilla attacks across

[0:14] its border and the capture of two

[0:16] Israeli soldiers. CBS News chief foreign

[0:18] correspondent Lara Logan is right on the

[0:20] border in Israel, right between these

[0:23] two countries. Good morning, Lara.

[0:24] What's the latest?

[0:27] >> Good morning, Harry. Well, I'm standing

[0:28] just in front of an Israeli artillery

[0:30] position where they've been firing

[0:32] shells into Lebanon constantly since

[0:34] this crisis began. This as Israeli

[0:37] warplanes carried out the heaviest air

[0:39] campaign against Lebanon in 24 years.

[0:44] The only international airport in

[0:45] Lebanon was shut down by Israeli bombs

[0:48] that pounded the runway, leaving

[0:51] passengers stranded in the terminal.

[0:53] >> All the flight were cancelled due to the

[0:55] bombing.

[0:57] part of a determined effort by Israel to

[1:00] cut off supply routes to Hezbollah

[1:02] fighters by imposing an air and sea

[1:04] blockade.

[1:06] They also bombed dozens of roads and

[1:09] bridges. There were scenes of panic in

[1:11] Beirut as Israel extended their attacks

[1:15] to the Lebanese capital.

[1:17] Also hitting the Hezbollah TV station.

[1:21] And here in a Bayroot morttery, the

[1:23] bodies were piling up as the death toll

[1:26] kept rising. At least 47 confirmed dead

[1:29] so far. Children's bodies were among

[1:32] those pulled from the rubble of two

[1:34] homes in this village in South Lebanon,

[1:36] where officials said two entire families

[1:39] were killed. On the Israeli side of the

[1:41] border, one woman was killed as

[1:43] Hezbollah guerillas continued to rain

[1:46] down rockets on Jewish settlements and

[1:48] at least 35 people were wounded.

[1:50] >> They hit us and we hit them. We must

[1:54] tell them now. Now it's the time. We are

[1:59] here for good.

[2:00] >> Israeli forces are still trying to

[2:02] retrieve the bodies of four soldiers

[2:04] killed on the other side of the border

[2:06] who've now been lying there for more

[2:07] than 24 hours. And there's also no word

[2:10] on the fate of the two captured

[2:11] soldiers, Harry.

[2:13] >> All right, because Hezbollah captured

[2:14] these two soldiers yesterday. They're

[2:16] still the one that has been held for 2

[2:19] weeks now with the Palestinians. Is

[2:21] there any word on negotiations to get

[2:23] these guys released and maybe see this

[2:24] fighting abate?

[2:28] >> Well, you know, Israel's made it very

[2:29] clear that they are not prepared to

[2:31] negotiate directly with Hamas or Hisbah

[2:33] or any militants whatsoever. There is

[2:36] talk of negotiations through uh third

[2:38] party countries like Egypt and Turkey

[2:40] but really the political side of this

[2:43] has been damaged by the escalation in

[2:45] the military campaign here and there is

[2:47] real concern of this spreading

[2:48] throughout the region. Harry

[2:50] >> Larara Logan right on the border between

[2:52] Israel and Lebanon this morning. Thank

[2:54] you so much.
