[0:06] This is the [music] CBS Evening News
[0:10] with Dan Rather in Washington [music]
[0:13] and Connie Chung in New York.
[0:15] >> Good evening. The big news here on
[0:17] Capitol Hill and around the country
[0:18] tonight is the latest surge in jobs and
[0:21] the US economy. Unemployment hit a
[0:24] 4-year low. The unemployment rate
[0:26] plunged down to 5.4% 4% in December. The

[1:10] >> And the president, who is sometimes
[1:12] accused of sounding wishy-washy, was
[1:14] careful to put Republicans on notice. I
[1:17] will stand against any effort to roll
[1:19] back or to rock the foundations of the
[1:22] recovery by proposals that explode the
[1:25] deficit or gimmicks that undermine the
[1:28] integrity of the budget we have worked
[1:30] so hard to put in place.
[1:32] >> With that, the Democrats went into their
[1:34] strategy session and emerged with an
[1:36] idea that could bog down the Republicans
[1:38] plan for a balanc
