[0:06] >> Welcome to World News from Seattle.
[0:09] Tonight, a comment by Barack Obama sets
[0:12] off a stinging exchange of accusations.
[0:14] The campaign's trade charges of lies,
[0:17] smears, and swiftboat politics. Taking
[0:20] aim, Texas prepares for Hurricane Ike.
[0:23] Evacuations begin as the deadly storm
[0:25] gathers strength. Getting cozy. Federal
[0:28] officials overseeing big oil deals worth
[0:31] billions. Accused of having sex and
[0:33] taking gifts supplied by energy
[0:35] companies. And dog days from Alaska. How
[0:39] the world's best four-legged athletes
[0:42] managed to stay in shape in the off
[0:44] season.
[0:47] From ABC News, this is World News with
[0:51] Charles Gibson, reporting tonight from
[0:54] Seattle.
[0:56] Good evening. We are in Seattle on our
[0:58] way to Alaska for the next two days
[1:00] where we'll have the opportunity to sit
[1:02] down on both days with Governor Sarah
[1:05] Palin. These will be her first interview
[1:07] since being put on the Republican
[1:08] ticket. And we begin tonight with a
[1:10] controversy about what the Republicans
[1:12] accuse Barack Obama of saying about
[1:15] Governor Palin. It's a case study in
[1:17] what might be called shortfuse politics.
[1:20] A candidate says something within
[1:22] seconds his opponent cries foul and
[1:24] suddenly you have the makings of a
[1:25] perfect political storm. ABC's Jake
[1:28] Tapper is with the Obama campaign
[1:30] tonight in New York. Jake, good evening.
[1:32] >> Good evening, Charlie. Well, Barack
[1:33] Obama today said that John McCain was
[1:36] cynically making up a controversy about
[1:38] something that Obama simply never said.
