[0:00] Hey, it's me Destin. Welcome back to Smarter Every Day. This is Gordon. He's been doing the sound for Smarter Every Day for years. This is the first time we've met, but it's in Peru. Pretty crazy. He's from Canada. So, what are we doing here? We're fitting you up with binaural microphones. So, I want you to put that in your ear. I'm going to get you some windscreens, which make you look extra good.

[0:19] What are binaural microphones? Binaural microphones are stereo microphones that take into account the fact that you have a head, which most stereo microphones do not. So, your head is a big frequency filter. And if a sound goes in this ear, not all the same frequencies are going to reach this ear in the same way. That's because of the fatness of my head, right? You're very fat. There will be a time delay and there will be a frequency change. That's awesome.

[0:47] So, I did a back of the envelope calculation. If I have a sound coming in from the left, there's a 500 microsecond delay before it gets to my other ear. And they should be able to hear that?

[0:54] They should be able to hear that as if it's surround sound, if you put your headphones on.

[0:58] Oh, okay. So, go throw your headphones on and we're going to walk around Machu Picchu. The reason we're going to do this is because Jeff's up here taking the highest resolution photo of Machu Picchu that's ever taken in a panoramic form.

[1:09] And I'm trying to be productive with the time. So, go put headphones on, right?

[1:12] Right.

[1:13] All right. Here we go. Let's go check it out.

[1:19] Wait a second. This is Gord. We have to make sure that your headphones are on correctly or it will ruin everything.

[1:26] So, let's test your left ear, right ear, left ear, right ear, left ear. Perfect. Go.

[1:46] You want a photo?

[1:48] Perfect.

[1:49] Yeah.

[1:49] Thank you.

[1:51] No problem.

[1:52] From here, go to Australia.

[1:54] From here, go to Australia and then go to Asia.

[1:57] Yeah.

[2:09] You want another one?

[2:16] No, it's perfect.

[2:17] Perfect?

[2:17] Mm-hmm.

[2:18] Thank you very much.

[2:18] Thank you.

[7:07] we go up to the middle of the room.

[7:08] I'm not sure if I'm at a moment.

[7:09] You can see here and then the room is inside.

[7:12] If I just have to wait for 30,000 to wait for us.

[7:15] There will be some place.

[8:29] And we'll go up there.

[8:32] We're going to go up there.

[8:33] Okay.

[8:35] So I was like, I'm not going to be here for this long.

[8:41] So I was like, what did you say?

[8:59] I was like, I'm so sorry.

[9:01] I'm so sorry.

[9:01] I don't know what to do, but I don't know what to do, but I don't know what to do.

[10:28] I don't know what to do, but I don't know what to do.

[10:35] So apparently I was somewhere I wasn't supposed to be.

[10:46] I don't know what to do, but I don't know what to do, but I don't know what to do.

[10:58] I don't know what to do, but I don't know what to do.

[11:47] I don't know.

[11:50] I don't know what to do.

[11:57] What's up, man?

[11:58] I don't know what to do.

[13:13] Before you start, I'm going to ask you a question.

[13:13] You will have to ask if any questions are going to ask you, the answer to your question.

[13:15] I'm going to ask you a question.

[13:33] well it doesn't go anywhere it closes off I don't know if the camera can see

[13:37] that doesn't look like this was on purpose though took a cornerstone went

[13:43] there once upon a time

[14:03] if my wife was here I would kiss her right there

[14:33] okay

[14:39] so

[15:08] So, let's go.

[15:12] This is pretty cool. They terrace it off like this so they could farm.

[15:16] If the grade is super steep like that over there, you can't farm, but if you terrace it off, you can.

[15:22] It's pretty awesome.

[15:24] They said they had enough farming space to feed more than four times the capacity,

[15:29] people-wise, of Machu Picchu.

[15:36] What? Seriously?

[15:50] Wow.

[15:55] If you hear me breathing hard, it's because I am.

[16:54] Check out the stones above the windows, it's pretty heavy.

[17:15] So what do you think this is for?

[17:17] Do you keep a vase or something here?

[17:36] It's a camera for my head, crazy?

[17:46] How do you do the flash?

[17:54] Sorry, my Spanish is very bad.

[31:28] Huh.

[31:29] So I have to get up there.

[31:34] Where the cameras are.

[32:44] Well, this concludes your Machu Picchu experience.

[32:47] We saw llamas.

[32:51] You got whistled at?

[32:51] Yeah, it never happens.

[32:52] You should wear that everywhere.

[32:54] I told them.

[32:54] I was like, look, I'm married.

[33:10] That was harder to do.

[33:11] Hey, I walked across the green plaza.

[33:15] I didn't know I wasn't supposed to.

[33:17] Oh, in the middle?

[33:18] Yeah, I walked across the plaza.

[33:20] I just jumped straight down.

[33:22] They weren't happy about that.

[33:23] I got screamed at.

[33:24] Really?

[33:25] Yeah, but...

[33:25] What, that green plaza?

[33:26] You can't go across?

[33:27] Apparently not, but the entire internet gets to experience it now.

[33:31] Yeah, it's a Smarter Every Day exclusive.

[33:34] Yeah.

[33:34] You get to walk across the green plaza at Machu Picchu yourself.

[33:38] I don't know.

[34:00] Thank you.
