[0:00] America
[0:04] has lost a close friend. The world has
[0:07] lost a great statesman. And mankind has
[0:10] lost a champion of peace.
[0:15] A small group of Egyptian soldiers
[0:17] firing from a truck in a military parade
[0:19] outside Cairo today assassinated
[0:21] President Anoir Saddaf. The reviewing
[0:24] stand on which the Egyptian leader,
[0:26] other officials, and many dignitaries
[0:28] were seated was raed with bullets and
[0:30] hit by grenades. It all happened in a
[0:32] matter of seconds. When it was over, at
[0:35] least a dozen persons, perhaps many
[0:37] more, and Anoir Sedat were dead.
[0:44] From around the world and from CBS News
[0:47] in Washington, this is the CBS Evening
[0:50] News with Dan Rather. Good evening. It
[0:53] was a day of brutal contrast in a suburb
[0:55] of Cairo. Anoir Sedat, dressed in a
[0:58] bibboned military uniform, reviewed his
[1:00] troops, the strength behind his rule.

[1:05] which Egypt claimed victory, a war that
[1:07] led to peace with Israel. And some of
[1:09] those Egyptian troops who enabled
[1:11] President Sedat to make his bold bid for
[1:13] peace turned on him. Mitchell Crrauss
[1:16] was there.
[1:18] Sadat's last day began as he met his
[1:20] generals at the Defense Ministry. Then
[1:22] he was cheered along the motorcade route
[1:24] to the parade grounds for the annual
[1:26] celebration of Egypt's partial victory
[1:28] in the 1973 war with Israel. He laid the
[1:32] traditional wreath at the Tomb of the
[1:33] Unknown Soldier and settled down to
[1:35] watch the display of Egypt's military
[1:37] might, much of it now purchased from the
[1:39] United States. Flanked by his vice
[1:42] president Hosni Mubarak and defense
