[0:10] Evening [music] News. Dan Rather
[0:12] reporting. Good evening. A late
[0:13] developing story. The defense department
[0:15] now confirms that an American ship came
[0:18] under fire in the Persian Gulf early
[0:20] this morning. Two small boats fired on
[0:23] the USS Lassal. The American Navy vessel
[0:26] returned fire. The two boats took off.
[0:29] Their identities not known. No injuries
[0:32] or damage reported aboard the Lasal. No
[0:35] explanation of why the Pentagon kept
[0:36] this secret. Details remain sketchy. In
[0:40] India, Rajiv Gandhi was assassinated
[0:42] today. He was a former prime minister
[0:44] trying for a comeback. Gandhi who was 46
[0:47] was killed by a bomb as he arrived for a
[0:49] campaign rally in southern India. 14
[0:52] other people also were killed. No one
[0:54] has claimed responsibility. Tom Fenton

[0:59] The assassination of Rajiv Gandhi ended
[1:02] a political dynasty that has dominated
[1:04] India since its independence in 1947.
[1:09] >> Rajie had been campaigning in this
[1:11] week's elections to regain the prime
[1:13] ministership he lost in 1989. He was
[1:16] seen as the front runner in a three-way
[1:18] race.
[1:21] >> This has been the most violent election
[1:22] in India's history. Hundreds have died
[1:25] in Hindu and Muslim rioting and there
[1:27] have been widespread charges of ballot
[1:29] rigging. Rajie promised the voters
[1:32] sweeping reforms.
[1:33] >> Well, a government that brings about
[1:35] very rapid change changes the methods of
[1:38] functioning of the government and
[1:40] involves the people much more in nation
[1:44] buildin
