[0:05] No rest for American troops this

[0:06] holiday. USled forces are sweeping

[0:09] through an area south of Baghdad hunting

[0:12] insurgents. CBS News correspondent Lee

[0:14] Cowan is live from the capital with

[0:16] more. Good morning, Lee.

[0:19] >> Good morning, Julia. A deadly

[0:20] announcement to start the Thanksgiving

[0:22] holiday off here. An American civilian

[0:24] working with the embassy here was shot

[0:26] and killed just outside the green zone.

[0:27] the same place where a mortar attack

[0:29] happened this morning. Clearly more

[0:31] evidence that Americans are still under

[0:32] attack and holiday or not, US forces are

[0:35] in at the moment leading another

[0:37] offensive already underway.

[0:40] >> It's the second Thanksgiving US troops

[0:42] have spent in Iraq and with Operation

[0:43] Plymouth Rock in full swing just south

[0:45] of Baghdad.

[0:46] >> Hands on their heads.

[0:48] >> Keep them quiet.

[0:49] >> They were working with British troops

[0:51] who detained at least 80 more terror

[0:53] suspects overnight. The region just

[0:55] south of Baghdad is a lawless area

[0:57] housing mostly street thugs and mob

[0:59] bosses. Soldiers report finding large

[1:01] amounts of bomb making material. Just

[1:03] the kind of resupply point insurgents

[1:05] are believed to have been using for

[1:06] months.

[1:08] It's the newest operation to follow on

[1:09] the holiday coming as US troops are

[1:11] still mopping up after a bloody sweep of

[1:13] the city of Fallujah. Some of the most

[1:15] difficult and deadly fighting of the

[1:17] conflict so far.

[1:18] >> We pray for those guys every day.

[1:20] Despite the grim state of affairs in

[1:22] Iraq, just two months ahead of

[1:23] democratic elections here, soldiers took

[1:26] time out to celebrate Thanksgiving in

[1:28] bases all across the country. In here,

[1:30] you can get away from Iraq. I guess this

[1:33] is the best meal of the year.

[1:34] >> I think you think of it in the back of

[1:35] your mind. Like I said, it's just

[1:37] knowing you have these soldiers here and

[1:39] your friends really helping get through

[1:40] the day.

[1:41] >> One group of Marines stumbled on a

[1:43] turkey that had found a home in a

[1:45] suspected insurgent hideout in the heart

[1:46] of Fallujah. reminder to some that it

[1:49] really was Thanksgiving even then.

[1:53] >> And it's not just troops overseas. There

[1:55] are thousands of troops back home as

[1:57] well, spending the Thanksgiving holiday

[1:59] wondering when or if they will be

[2:01] deployed to Iraq to help bolster the

[2:02] security forces for those elections on

[2:05] January 30th.
