[0:15] with Dan Rather reporting from CBS News
[0:18] headquarters in New York.
[0:21] >> And this is a special western edition.
[0:23] Good evening. It is Michigan. Impossible
[0:26] to call it this hour. The polls closed
[0:28] half an hour ago in the Michigan
[0:30] Republican primary and it is tighter
[0:32] than Willie Nelson's headband. George
[0:34] Bush and John McCain are locked in the
[0:36] political equivalent of sudden death
[0:38] overtime. If McCain loses, he may well
[0:41] be finished. If Bush wins, he may well
[0:44] be the Republican nominee. Turnout in
[0:46] Michigan heavy. Conservative core
[0:48] Republicans have been out in large
[0:50] numbers strongly for Bush, leaving
[0:52] McCain's hopes dependent on GOP
[0:54] moderates and swing voters, independents
[0:56] and Democrats who can vote in this open
[0:58] Republican contest. Turnout among these
[1:00] groups also is reported heavy. CBS's
[1:03] Bill Whitaker is in Michigan. Bill
[1:06] >> Dan, with the stakes so high and the
[1:08] time so short, both candidates tried
[1:11] what tried to use the onetwo punch that
[1:13] Bush used so successfully in South
[1:15] Carolina to flood the airways with
[1:17] positive images on local TV news, then
[1:20] clobber your opponent with negative ads
[1:22] and nasty phone calls.
[1:25] >> Here in the state of Michigan, he's
[1:28] calling me an anti-atholic bigot, and I
[1:30] don't appreciate it. In politics, what
[1:32] goes around comes around. Today, George
[1:35] W. Bush fumed he was being smeared by
[1:37] lastminute attack phone calls from John
[1:40] McCain's campaign.
