[0:00] Yeah.
[0:01] >> In the spirit of the Northwest, happy
[0:03] holidays from Channel 2.
[0:08] >> The commuter plane that may have trouble
[0:10] in icy conditions undergoes safety
[0:13] tests. Did it pass? The New York subway
[0:16] bomber. Police think they know the
[0:18] motive. And the White House raises
[0:20] questions about N. Gingrich, the new $4
[0:24] million man.
[0:28] From ABC, this is World News Tonight
[0:31] with Peter Jennings. Sitting in
[0:33] tonight's Forest Sawyer.
[0:34] >> Good evening. There is new cause for
[0:36] concern tonight about the safety of some
[0:38] turborop commuter planes when they are
[0:40] flown in icy conditions. An ABC News
[0:43] investigation has uncovered information
[0:45] about new flight tests that indicate the
[0:47] planes manufactured by a European
[0:50] company called ATR can become unstable
[0:53] when icing is severe. The partial
[0:56] grounding by the Federal Aviation

[0:59] crash that left 68 people dead. ABC's
[1:02] Aaron Hayes reports on the new test
[1:04] results.
[1:06] >> A new round of tests on the ATR plane
[1:08] was wrapped up yesterday at Edwards Air
[1:10] Force Base in California. Many,
[1:13] including the plane's manufacturer, had
[1:15] been hoping the planes could be returned
[1:16] to service, but federal aviation
[1:18] officials have told ABC News that is
[1:20] unlikely to happen anytime soon. For
[1:23] these latest tests, the Air Force
[1:25] provided a water tanker aircraft which
[1:27] once airborne created a kind of freezing
[1:30] rain cloud just above an ATR plane which
[1:33] was flying 100 ft behind. While the ATR
[1:36] passed the basic test for icing, sources
[1:39] tell ABC News that in more severe
[1:41] conditions, the aircra
