[0:00] >> NBC Nightly News with Tom Bro. Tonight,

[0:04] America at war.

[0:07] >> Good evening. As we approach the end of

[0:09] week three of the war in the Persian

[0:11] Gulf, the Iranians now are trying to get

[0:13] involved as peace brokers while the

[0:16] Allied air war continues without letup.

[0:18] The Iranian offer remains just that, an

[0:20] offer to mediate. However, as NBC's Fred

[0:23] Francis at the Pentagon tells us now,

[0:25] American military strategists are much

[0:27] more concerned with Iraq's military

[0:29] planning. Fred,

[0:31] >> Tom, that's right. Pentagon intelligence

[0:33] analysts say they expect Saddam Hussein

[0:35] to again order some of his ground

[0:37] troops, to go on the attack before US

[0:39] troops are ready for their own

[0:40] offensive.

[0:43] Saddam has his Republican guards,

[0:45] 150,000 men with tanks on the northern

[0:47] border. But in Kuwait and near Saudi

[0:50] territory are tens of thousands of other

[0:52] combat ready troops with heavy tanks. As

[0:55] US forces spread out facing those troops

[0:58] and the Iraqi border, there is a

[1:00] constant surveillance, spy satellites,

[1:02] warning aircraft, and reconnaissance

[1:03] patrols waiting to spot an Iraqi thrust

[1:06] south. Unlike last week's probing action

[1:09] with 5 to 600 men in four locations, it

[1:12] would not surprise Pentagon sources if

[1:14] Saddam sent at least 10,000 men into

[1:17] Saudi Arabia. More important, say the

[1:19] sources, lightly dug in US divisions

[1:22] would be unable to repel the attack

[1:24] immediately. But by the second day of

[1:26] the assault, the sources believe it

[1:28] would evolve into a killing zone. US

[1:30] tanks would close on Iraqi flanks.

[1:33] Artillery would block a retreat. An
