[0:13] You're watching CBS News continuing
[0:16] coverage of Showdown in the Gulf.
[0:21] From CBS News headquarters in New York,
[0:24] here are Connie Chung and Charles
[0:26] Caralt.
[0:27] >> Here are the headlines of this hour. A
[0:29] new wave of Allied bombing apparently is
[0:32] underway.
[0:34] Thousand sorties last night, more
[0:36] tonight. It's nighttime over there.
[0:38] Allied troops are massing on the Kuwait
[0:40] border. That may signal the start of the
[0:43] ground war pretty soon. The president
[0:45] says he is pleased with progress in the
[0:48] Gulf War so far, but still no sign that
[0:52] Saddam Hussein is backing down, though
[0:54] the White House has called upon him now
[0:56] to surrender. Increased air activity in
[0:59] Saudi Arabia seems to indicate that a
[1:02] new wave of strikes against Iraq is
[1:04] indeed underway during the Persian Gulf
[1:07] night. That report brought this response
[1:10] from Marines in Saudi Arabia.
[1:14] >> I think it's pretty good right now.

[1:18] sooner is fine with me.
[1:19] >> Well, sitting in the desert for about 5
[1:21] months, it's about time something
[1:22] happened.
[1:24] >> You're glad about this? Well, I'm not
[1:26] glad about the aspect about going to war
[1:28] and I don't think any Marine sitting
[1:29] here in this desert is. But something's
[1:32] happening and it's the start. It's the
[1:34] start of something.
[1:35] >> Now, what's going to happen?
[1:36] >> Remember you as a man that comes to me
[1:37] and says,
[1:38] >> "That's what I'm worried about. What
[1:39] happens next?"
[1:40] >> Every time I see.
[1:44] >> The air war began with devastating
[1:46] suddenness last night with the launching
[1:48] of about 100 Tomahawk cruise missi
