[0:02] President Bush sees for himself the pain
[0:04] and suffering of the starving children
[0:06] of Somalia.
[0:07] In this country, a deadly New Year's Eve
[0:09] ritual and a new push to stop it. An eye
[0:12] on America tonight, cracking down on
[0:15] drivers who have no respect for the law
[0:17] or your life.
[0:20] This is the CBS Evening News.
[0:27] Good evening. I'm Paula Zahn sitting in
[0:29] tonight for Dan Rather. President Bush
[0:31] is spending the night on a US Navy ship
[0:33] off Somalia, a safe distance from the
[0:36] gunfire being exchanged by rival groups
[0:38] in the capital city of Mogadishu. The
[0:40] president got a close-up look today at
[0:42] the military operation he ordered and he
[0:45] was clearly moved by what US troops are
[0:47] doing. Giselle Fernandez begins our
[0:50] coverage of the rescue in Somalia.
[0:54] It was the children of Somalia who
[0:55] welcomed President Bush to their
[0:57] suffering ravaged country. The greeting
[0:59] was as unprecedented as his mission
[1:01] here. Some of the world's poorest
[1:03] children meeting the world's most
[1:05] powerful man. Their jubilance astounding
[1:07] after having endured so many months of
[1:10] misery.
[1:15] In a Red Cross refugee camp called the
[1:17] place of the bones, the president saw
[1:18] firsthand the severe hardship that
[1:20] prompted Operation Restore Hope.
[1:26] Two months ago, most of these children
[1:28] were starving. One or two still die here
[1:30] every week. But things are much better,
[1:32] the president was told, since the
[1:33] arrival of the troops. Doing something
[1:35] to help other people is the best of
[1:37] America and I tell you I
[1:40] thank you very much.
[1:44] UNDER AS MUCH SECURITY as possible in a
[1:46] country terrorized
