[0:06] This is NBC Nightly News. Reporting from
[0:09] New York, Jessica Savage.
[0:11] >> Good evening. President Reagan today
[0:13] gave another once over to the 14.2
[0:16] billion supplemental appropriations
[0:17] bill, then stamped it with his veto. The
[0:20] bill contains funds for military
[0:22] salaries, but White House officials said
[0:23] the government would take extraordinary
[0:25] steps to avoid payless paydays. White
[0:28] House correspondent John Palmer is with
[0:30] the president in California.
[0:34] >> The president announced the veto during
[0:36] a live 5-minute radio talk from his

[1:08] one question. Do we, as a nation, have
[1:11] the unshakable determination to get
[1:13] federal spending under control once and
[1:15] for all. The president waited until the
[1:18] end of his radio talk to announce his
[1:20] veto of the 14 billion appropriations
[1:23] bill. even though it means delay in
[1:25] getting legislation I believe is vital
[1:27] to our nation's welfare. I have
[1:29] therefore vetoed that supplemental
[1:32] appropriations bill. Until next week,
[1:35] thanks for listening and God bless you.
[1:37] In a message to Congress, the president
[1:39] explained his veto by
