[0:08] >> Hurricane Floyd, the monster storm
[0:11] lashing the eastern seabboard, powerful
[0:13] winds, driving rain, surging tides. A
[0:16] mass evacuation of 2 and a half million
[0:19] Americans. Even the US military moving
[0:21] ships and planes out of harm's way.
[0:24] In-depth coverage all along the coast
[0:26] tonight as this monster storm closes in
[0:29] on the mainland.

[0:33] Hurricane Floyd. This is a special
[0:36] edition of NBC Nightly News with Tom
[0:39] Bro. Reporting tonight from Wilmington,
[0:42] North Carolina.
[0:45] Good evening from Wilmington, where at
[0:47] the moment at least there's a slight
[0:48] lull in the heavy rains that have been
[0:50] pounding the city all day long.
[0:51] Nonetheless, Wilmington does remain
[0:53] directly in the path of Hurricane Floyd.
[0:56] And as a result, most of the residents
[0:58] of this city of 68,000 are long gone
[1:01] tonight, headed for higher ground.
[1:03] They're taking this storm very seriously
[1:05] and with good reason. Take a look at
[1:07] these satellite images now. Floyd is now
[1:09] less than 200 miles south of where I'm
[1:11] standing, and it's moving directly
[1:13] north, right toward us. It has weakened
[1:16] slightly, but it remains extremely
[1:18] dangerous. Projections show the system
[1:20] tracking due north, heading inland by 11
[1:22] tonight and making landfall overnight in
[1:24] full force here in Wilmington by 8
[1:27] tomorrow morning, then moving straight
[1:29] up the east coast through the
[1:30] Mid-Atlantic by 6 p.m. and into New York
[1:34] and New England on Friday. As for where
[1:37] Floyd has already been, take a look at
[1:39] the scene at Daytona Beach, Florida thi
