[0:01] Bye. Have a beautiful time.

[0:11] >> Tonight, a mile long street famous for

[0:14] its high-end shopping is disrupted by

[0:16] gunfire.

[0:17] >> Screaming, moaning. You couldn't really

[0:19] tell what that she was saying.

[0:20] >> Why police opened fire with hundreds of

[0:23] shoppers in range.

[0:25] A fight about living green hits Oregon.

[0:28] The reason some environmentalists say

[0:30] wind turbines are bad for nature.

[0:33] A warning for folks heading to one local

[0:35] park. The big animal police say you

[0:38] should be on the lookout for as you

[0:40] enjoy the outdoors.

[0:42] But first, a neighborhood get together

[0:44] ends in gunfire and a possible murder.

[0:47] >> Just heard one gunshot pop.

[0:48] >> Tonight, hear from a witness who was

[0:50] standing close to the victim when the

[0:52] shots were fired. That story is first on

[0:55] Fox.

[0:56] Good evening. Thanks for joining us. I'm

[0:58] Sophie So

[0:59] >> and I'm Chad Carter. First on Fox

[1:01] tonight, a neighborhood dispute that

[1:03] ended with one man dead and another in

[1:06] jail accused of killing him. St. Helens

[1:08] police say Todd Marchant shot his next

[1:11] door neighbor, Everett Brileley, at his

[1:13] home on North Second Street last night.

[1:15] KPTV's Mark Anrahan live in the mobile

[1:17] newsroom with the very latest on this

[1:19] investigation. Mark? Well, Chad, police

[1:21] say the men started the day as friends,

[1:23] but after some type of disagreement,

[1:25] they say Marchant shot Bryley on

[1:27] Bryley's front porch.

[1:29] Handcuffed and in a county jail

[1:31] jumpsuit, Todd Marchant has returned to

[1:33] the crime scene to help investigators

[1:35] piece together what happened just hours

[1:37] earlier.

[1:37] >> I heard a gunshot last night.

[1:39] >> Didn't know if it was a firework or

[1:41] something,

[1:41] >> and I just am shocked that it ended that

[1:43] way. Police say Marchant and Everett

[1:45] Brileley, seen here in a picture taken

[1:47] from his MySpace page, had spent the day

[1:49] together golfing, but at some point

[1:51] later on, began to argue. That dispute

[1:53] ended at around 11:30 last night when

[1:55] investigators say Marchant went to his

[1:57] home, grabbed a handgun, went back to

[1:59] Bryley's house, and shot him on the

[2:01] front porch.

[2:02] >> It just made me sick to my stomach.

[2:03] Makes me feel tragic for the whole both

[2:05] families cuz I know they both have kids.

[2:06] >> Riley was flown to Legacy Emanuel

[2:08] Hospital in Portland, but did not

[2:10] survive. It's just unbelievable for

[2:12] something like this to happen.

[2:13] >> Meanwhile, word of the deadly shooting

[2:15] spread quickly among neighbors who

[2:17] described both men as nice guys.

[2:19] >> I just can't believe that somebody would

[2:20] actually shoot him. I mean, I'm thinking

[2:22] about this morning the guys in jail

[2:25] going, "Yeah, what did I do?"

[2:27] >> Police are not saying what the two were

[2:29] arguing about before the shot was fired,

[2:31] but neighbors tell Fox 12 both men had

[2:33] been drinking, and they say Bryley was

[2:35] armed with a sword when he was shot by

[2:37] Marchant on his front porch. I'm sorry

[2:39] for them both.

[2:40] >> So, as the investigation continues

[2:42] tonight, neighbors say they feel sorry

[2:44] for the men's families. Both are said to

[2:46] have children who now face a future

[2:48] without their father.

[2:49] >> I do feel really bad for the kids. I

[2:52] just young kids in both families. I just

[2:54] think that is a horrible, horrible

[2:56] thing.

[2:58] >> And Marchant is being held in the

[2:59] Columbia County jail without bond,

[3:01] facing a murder charge. Reporting live

[3:03] in the mobile newsroom tonight, I'm Mark

[3:04] Handraan, the 10:00 news. People in one

[3:06] local town say they're upset they

[3:08] weren't notified that a home in their

[3:10] neighborhood will soon be used as a

[3:12] methway house. The controversy comes out

[3:14] of Newberg, right next to the Avalon

[3:16] Mobile Home Park, where neighbors say

[3:18] they're concerned for their safety.

[3:20] KPTV's Brent Weissberg joins us live

[3:22] from News Control with more. Brent,

[3:24] >> neighbors say not only are they

[3:25] concerned about their safety, they worry

[3:27] about property value plummeting as well.

[3:30] >> This this is such a quiet, nice

[3:32] neighborhood. We all know each other. We

[3:35] all look out for each other.

[3:36] >> It's a quiet neighborhood just off

[3:38] Highway 219.

[3:39] >> We're all just a little community and we

[3:41] get along great.

[3:41] >> For 5 years now, Susan Jones has called

[3:44] this area her home. But tonight, there's

[3:46] a reason this sign sits in her front

[3:48] yard.

[3:49] >> My jaw dropped to the floor.

[3:50] >> Just a few weeks ago, the neighbors of

[3:52] the small town were told the

[3:54] organization Thugs Off Drugs would be

[3:57] leasing this house.

[3:58] >> Oh, I think that this whole place is

[3:59] going to go to pieces.

[4:00] >> It's the house directly behind Susan

[4:03] Jones's home. And I do never I I don't

[4:06] want it next door.

[4:07] >> Neighbors say they're concerned the

[4:08] rehab home will put criminals into their

[4:10] backyard.

[4:11] >> And some of them are right out of prison

[4:13] on parole. They have no income.

[4:16] >> That's not the case. According to the

[4:17] organization,

[4:18] >> we have zero tolerance. There's there's

[4:20] random year analysis taken uh two three

[4:23] times a week.

[4:24] >> The organization says they understand

[4:26] the neighbors concern

[4:27] >> and their risk to the neighborhood is

[4:29] very small. And we have an open door

[4:30] policy with the city police and with the

[4:33] county police. We have an excellent

[4:35] relationship with them.

[4:36] >> They say the people who will be living

[4:37] next door are looking for change,

[4:40] looking for a better life.

[4:42] >> These people basically this is their

[4:45] last opportunity. We take the people

[4:47] that can't find any housing that have uh

[4:50] no other recourse. It's this or go back

[4:53] to jail.

[4:54] >> The halfway house is expected to open in

[4:56] the next two weeks. And tonight, the

[4:57] founder of Thugs Off Drug tells me they

[5:00] will work with the community members to

[5:01] ensure their safety. Reporting live

[5:03] tonight in News Control, Brent Weisber,

[5:04] the 10:00 news. A little boy fell about

[5:07] 30 feet from a train bridge into a creek

[5:10] and suffered serious injuries. It

[5:12] happened just north of Battleground Lake

[5:14] State Park this morning. The Clark

[5:16] County Sheriff's Office says the

[5:17] four-year-old had been with his mom and

[5:19] stepfather camping just before the fall.

[5:22] Deputies arrested the stepfather on an

[5:24] outstanding warrant and say he also had

[5:26] injuries, but they say he denied knowing

[5:29] about the fall. Paramedics took the boy

[5:31] to Emanuel Legacy. His injuries not

[5:33] life-threatening. Deputies are still

[5:35] investigating.

[5:39] Then police say Fox 12's most wanted

[5:41] tried to set an adult superstore on

[5:43] fire. Early Friday morning, police say

[5:45] someone poured gas on the walls and

[5:48] floor of a storage shed connected to

[5:50] Imagine That. A janitor confronted the

[5:53] suspect who then ran off. The gas was

[5:55] never ignited and the business only

[5:57] suffered minor damage. The suspect is

[5:59] described as about 5'6, 160 lbs. He wore

[6:03] a green jacket and tan pants.

[6:05] >> Well, deputies arrested a woman for

[6:07] assaulting a man with a beer bottle in

[6:09] Lincoln County. Authorities say Michelle

[6:11] Dylan hit the victim in the head with

[6:13] the bottle. That victim called for help

[6:15] early Thursday morning. And after

[6:17] talking with the victim at the hospital,

[6:19] deputies headed to Dylan's Otis home and

[6:22] arrested her. And she faces assault

[6:24] charges tonight.

[6:27] A possible bear may be making a park

[6:30] near Buckton home and that has some

[6:32] people keeping an eye out. A group of

[6:34] hikers were at Stub Stewart State Park

[6:36] earlier today and heard strange noises

[6:38] coming from the forest. Oregon State

[6:40] Police sent their game officer to check

[6:42] things out along with a trooper because

[6:44] they say they're aware of a bear that

[6:46] lives in the area. One man heard the

[6:48] noises while hiking with friends.

[6:50] >> But I don't know what a bear sounds

[6:51] like, so I wouldn't know. But the the

[6:53] there was the winnie of the horse and a

[6:55] sort of roaring directly after that. And

[6:58] it happened several times. and we

[7:00] stopped on the trail to listen to hear

[7:02] because it sounded very unusual.

[7:03] >> Now, no one spotted a bear today, but

[7:05] troopers want to make sure the park is

[7:07] safe. So, if you see anything, please

[7:09] call Oregon State Police.

[7:11] >> Now, Portland's first weather at 10.

[7:14] >> Hope you had a great Mother's Day

[7:16] weekend. Here's a look at the live radar

[7:17] picture. We do have some light showers

[7:19] moving on in, and it looks like we're

[7:21] going to see a wet start to the work

[7:23] week. After a mostly dry weekend, we're

[7:25] just seeing a few sprinkles moving into

[7:27] the Portland area. A lot of this not

[7:29] even hitting the ground. But as we head

[7:30] to our east, we do have some showers up

[7:32] around the Dofur area and into Min.

[7:35] We're seeing some scattered light

[7:36] showers and we'll continue to see the

[7:38] rain spread inland during the overnight

[7:40] hours. Let's show you our high

[7:41] temperatures for Mother's Day. Pretty

[7:43] impressive when you consider our lack of

[7:45] sunshine. We did have quite a bit of

[7:47] cloud cover today. We still made it to

[7:49] 70 degrees at the Portland airport, 69

[7:51] in Troutdale, and 70 in Vancouver.

[7:54] Here's a look at where temperatures are

[7:55] currently. 64 in Portland. We are going

[7:58] to be cooler than this for a high

[8:00] temperature for tomorrow. I'll have

[8:01] details on the cooler temperatures and

[8:03] the rain on the way coming up in your

[8:05] 7-day forecast.

[8:06] >> All right, Stephanie, thanks so much.

[8:08] Veronia residents flooded out of their

[8:10] homes are facing eviction from their

[8:12] FEMA trailers. Their 18-month deadline

[8:15] is less than a month away now and has

[8:17] some people scrambling tonight for a new

[8:19] place to live. KPTV's Marilyn Deutsch

[8:22] reports from the Fox 12 newsroom. In

[8:24] 2008, FEMA set up about 20 trailers in a

[8:28] vacant lot in Vernonia. Sparkling white

[8:30] and neatly lined up, residents jokingly

[8:33] refer to this temporary neighborhood as

[8:35] FEMA Park, or simply the resort. Ernie

[8:38] and Robin Smith have lived here 8

[8:40] months.

[8:41] >> I I don't blame FEMA. I mean, I'm I'm

[8:43] we're extremely grateful for having this

[8:46] place.

[8:46] >> FEMA gave flood victims 18 months to

[8:48] rebuild their flooded homes, take a

[8:50] government buyout, or make other

[8:52] arrangements. The problem is this. FEMA

[8:54] says that 18 months started at the time

[8:57] of the disaster, December 2007. However,

[9:00] the FEMA trailers didn't arrive in

[9:02] Vernonia until the spring of 2008.

[9:05] >> It threw everybody off because they said

[9:07] 18 months. The trailers didn't get here

[9:09] until April. And then, you know, come to

[9:11] find out the 18 months is from the

[9:12] declaration.

[9:13] >> The Smiths who are paying the mortgage

[9:15] on their flooded home will soon have to

[9:17] pay rent, too. And while they're

[9:19] thankful for the roof over their heads,

[9:21] it's been a tight squeeze for them and

[9:23] their three children.

[9:25] >> Not much storage space for anything. The

[9:27] Smiths went from 2200 square ft on 5

[9:30] acres to the 800 ft government trailer.

[9:34] They would like to rebuild, but they've

[9:36] been flooded twice in 11 years.

[9:38] >> We're kind of tired. I mean, we don't

[9:40] want to do this again every 11 years

[9:42] restarting over. We want to establish uh

[9:45] for the future. Others here in FEMA Park

[9:48] say they're hoping for a government

[9:50] buyout.

[9:50] >> Plans are a little up in the air until

[9:52] that's resolved and we don't know when

[9:53] that's going to happen.

[9:54] >> David Hearnen says he'd like to stay put

[9:56] until he gets the money. Problem is

[9:58] FEMA's trailer deadline isn't in sync

[10:01] with the buyout which has to go through

[10:03] the feds, the state, the county, and the

[10:06] city.

[10:06] >> There's different agendas and there's

[10:07] different timets. There's different uh

[10:10] bureaucracies involved. Oregon Senator

[10:12] Ron Widen has asked FEMA to extend that

[10:15] trailer deadline beyond June. In the Fox

[10:18] 12 newsroom, Marilyn Deutsch, the 10:00

[10:20] news.

[10:24] We are learning more about the

[10:25] Washington state man who died from

[10:27] complications with the recent flu

[10:28] outbreak. We brought you the story is

[10:30] breaking news last night on the 10:00

[10:32] news. The Washington State Department of

[10:34] Health says the Snomish County man had

[10:37] underlying heart conditions and viral

[10:39] pneumonia when he died last week.

[10:41] >> Any death from flu is tragic and again

[10:44] our hearts go out to this family. Uh we

[10:48] know that we will have more confirmed

[10:49] cases because we're looking and really

[10:51] what I'm asking everyone to do is for

[10:53] everyone to do their best to avoid

[10:55] getting the flu. Today, federal health

[10:58] officials say a cruise ship crew member

[11:00] has a probable cause of the H1N1 flu

[11:03] virus. Authorities say she has been in

[11:05] isolation since becoming sick. Right

[11:07] now, the number of flu cases in the US

[11:09] is at least 2500 people.

[11:12] >> The 10:00 news is just getting started.

[11:15] >> Suspended for going to a high school

[11:17] prom. Why one student could be forced to

[11:19] end his senior year at home after going

[11:22] to the big dance with his girlfriend.

[11:27] how blogging online could turn into cash

[11:30] in your pocket.

[11:31] >> A mother pleads for burglars to have a

[11:33] heart.

[11:34] >> A part of me is missing and I mean a

[11:38] part of me is gone until I get it back.

[11:40] >> Find out what the crook stole from her

[11:42] home that has turned her world upside

[11:44] down.

[11:45] >> The economic crisis means some good news

[11:48] for some local institutions.

[11:49] >> I don't know where my life would be. See

[11:51] who's getting a big boost during these

[11:53] hard times.

[11:55] >> We have rain showing up in the forecast.

[11:57] I'll have details on the wet weather

[11:59] ahead coming up.

[14:44] >> This is the bomb. Get back.

[14:45] >> All new 24 after house. Monday at 8 on

[14:48] Fox 12 Oregon.

[14:51] >> Amidst the current economic crisis,

[14:53] business is booming around Oregon in the

[14:56] education arena. Thousands of laid-off

[14:58] workers are going back to school and

[15:00] many are swarming to the state's 17

[15:02] community colleges. KPTV's Mark Lizooki

[15:05] has the details.

[15:07] Non-traditional students are becoming

[15:09] the norm on campuses across the country,

[15:11] including at Portland Community College.

[15:13] >> Most of the students that I run into

[15:15] now, they're back at school because they

[15:17] were laid off and there's just no money

[15:19] out there.

[15:20] >> Monica Roundtree recently became a new

[15:22] full-time student at PCC after she lost

[15:25] her accounting job for a general

[15:27] contractor. Um, after I was laid off and

[15:30] didn't know what direction to go,

[15:32] sitting down with some of the adviserss

[15:34] and the counselors, they were able to

[15:36] get me on track.

[15:38] >> Dave Walters is going for his Oregon

[15:40] Associate of Arts transfer degree that

[15:42] he can later use at any 4-year college

[15:44] in Oregon.

[15:45] >> A lot of people that I know tell me that

[15:47] I'm in the best place for right now.

[15:49] Writing out the recession in college is

[15:51] a great place to be.

[15:54] >> Air12 gave us this view of PCC's

[15:56] Sylvania campus. The skyrocketing

[15:58] enrollment has become historic for PCC.

[16:01] Enrollment jumped by nearly 20% from

[16:03] last year. The college's population is

[16:05] up more than 10% totaling nearly 38,000

[16:09] students. Will the increasing demand

[16:10] force PCC to limit enrollment?

[16:12] >> For the time being, we're going to keep

[16:14] growing and keep serving as many of the

[16:16] students as we can.

[16:16] >> State and federal governments now offer

[16:18] more grants and funding to make college

[16:20] more affordable. The wave of new

[16:22] students see bright futures for

[16:23] themselves. If it wasn't for the

[16:25] community colleges, I would still be

[16:28] working some of these temporary odd jobs

[16:29] or minimum wage jobs and I don't know

[16:32] where my life would be.

[16:33] >> Just keep the positive attitude and

[16:34] everything going to be all right.

[16:36] >> In Southwest Portland, Mark Lazookuski,

[16:37] the 10:00 news.

[16:39] >> Oregon State University hit its first

[16:41] fundraising goal for the campaign for

[16:43] OSU. It recently reached the 500 million

[16:46] mark. University administrators say the

[16:49] fundraising efforts are on track to meet

[16:51] its goal of raising 625 million by 2011.

[16:55] They say one in five graduates has

[16:57] donated.

[16:58] >> Just months into the new service,

[17:00] Seapport Airlines is struggling to get

[17:02] off the ground. It was supposed to be a

[17:04] way for people from Newport and Historia

[17:06] to get to Portland with just a 30inut

[17:09] flight. But the Oregonian says in

[17:10] Seapport's first six weeks of service,

[17:13] each nine seater aircraft between

[17:15] Portland and the coastal towns has just

[17:17] had an average of 1.65

[17:20] passengers. That means the state is

[17:22] subsidizing each flight by $750.

[17:28] Turning now to news around the Northwest

[17:30] tonight. Deputies are searching for two

[17:32] men who disappeared while rafting the

[17:34] Yakama River. The Yakama County

[17:36] Sheriff's Office says the search began

[17:38] last night and is now suspended for

[17:40] today. The Yakama Herald Republic

[17:42] newspaper says a trooper picked up a man

[17:44] who said he was rafting with three

[17:46] friends. Searchers found one man, but

[17:48] not the other two. Now, someone also

[17:50] found a backpack belonging to one of the

[17:53] missing men.

[17:55] Well, Mother's Day is almost done, so if

[17:57] you haven't thanked your mom yet, you

[17:59] better get a move on. Well, here in

[18:00] Portland, lots of people celebrated the

[18:02] day at the Rodendran Garden in the

[18:04] southeastern part of the city. The

[18:06] flowers created a great setting for moms

[18:08] and their loved ones to enjoy the

[18:09] holiday. We caught up with one mom from

[18:11] Nevada who visited the garden for the

[18:13] first time today after she was given a

[18:15] choice between the zoo or the garden.

[18:17] She's also a grandmother and loves

[18:19] watching her kids grow up.

[18:21] >> And it's really awesome to see them

[18:23] because they do thing. You remember that

[18:25] they are doing the same thing that your

[18:27] son did.

[18:29] several will several years ago. I won't

[18:32] tell you how long ago

[18:34] >> and she says she'll have to head up here

[18:36] from Nevada to get her roodendron fixed

[18:38] since it's too hot to grow them down

[18:40] there.

[18:41] >> Seems fitting. Well, what better place

[18:43] to take your mother on Mother's Day than

[18:45] well, Mother's Mother's Beastro in

[18:47] downtown Portland was filled with

[18:49] families celebrating. We talked with

[18:51] some moms who thought a mother's week

[18:53] sounded even better than just having one

[18:55] day. Others made sure that after a

[18:57] brunch there at Mother's they would have

[18:58] plenty of time to shop. Well, still

[19:01] ahead right here on the 10 o'clock news,

[19:03] restaurants, as we many of us know, have

[19:05] been hit hard by the struggling economy.

[19:06] >> Yeah, I see the length some owners are

[19:08] going to as they work to stay in the

[19:10] black.

[19:12] >> Rush Limbbo does not count as a troubled

[19:15] asset. I'm sorry.

[19:17] >> It's the night that Hollywood mingles

[19:19] with politics and the president pokes

[19:21] fun at just about everybody. After a

[19:24] mostly dry weekend, we are looking at

[19:26] some rain on the radar right now. I'll

[19:28] have details on the wet looking work

[19:29] week coming up. When you're away from

[19:31] the TV, you can get your local news

[19:33] online.

[19:33] >> That's right. Every newscast every day

[19:35] available to you streaming live on our

[19:37] website. It's happening right now at

[19:44] live local.

[19:51] So, you don't think we overdid it,

[19:53] right?

[19:53] >> No. Now that we're this plump, people

[19:55] are going to love us. Check us out. Py,

[19:57] ma'am, how'd you like some fresh Foster

[19:59] Farms plumpy chicken?

[20:01] >> You're not a Foster Farms chicken.

[20:03] You're all plumped up with salt water.

[20:05] So, you weigh more and I pay more.

[20:07] >> Who wouldn't want to pay more for this?

[20:09] >> Uh-oh. Can I talk to you?

[20:11] >> Yeah. What do you need, buddy? Wow, you

[20:12] throwing a leak.

[20:13] >> He's a plumber. HE'S A PLUMPER,

[20:16] >> GORGON.

[20:16] >> Say no to plumping. Foster Farms. Always

[20:19] natural. Always fresh.

[20:56] You know how consistently it heats your

[20:59] water. You know the control you have

[21:01] when you're cooking and how you can

[21:04] always count on natural gas. Oregon

[21:07] homes using high efficiency natural gas

[21:09] appliances instead of electric emit an

[21:12] average of 20% less greenhouse gases.

[21:14] Making your use of natural gas healthier

[21:17] for our planet.

[21:21] Still tonight, see what makes the Fox 12

[21:23] final cut. One student is told to stay

[21:25] home from school. Why going to prom was

[21:27] the decision that could have him

[21:28] suspended.

[21:29] >> It's not your normal car accident. How a

[21:31] wild bird may be to blame for this

[21:32] crash.

[21:33] >> And postage is going up. We'll tell you

[21:35] when and how much. It's all ahead in the

[21:38] final cut.

[21:41] >> Mike and Chad awoke in a cheerful mood

[21:43] at Lintita Inn and Suites. Perhaps it

[21:46] was the comfy beds.

[21:48] >> You ready for this thing?

[21:49] >> Yeah. Yeah.

[21:50] >> Well, you know, I thought this year's

[21:52] theme was breaking new ground.

[21:54] >> Yeah. I thought it was wind in our

[21:56] sails. Huh.

[21:58] >> Yeah.

[21:59] >> I think our speech just got a whole lot

[22:01] funnier.

[22:01] >> No, you're right. Wake up on the bright

[22:03] side at Lintita Inn and Suites with a

[22:06] comfy bed and rates from $59. Book now

[22:08] at lq.com.

[22:10] >> Lita.

[22:11] >> Life is full of choices like choosing

[22:14] the people who will help you along the

[22:15] way with the small stuff, the big stuff,

[22:20] and the important stuff. That's where

[22:23] American Family Insurance comes in.

[22:25] They'll get to know you before anything

[22:27] happens, so you'll receive the best care

[22:29] if something happens. Good choice. For

[22:33] over 80 years, American Family

[22:35] Insurance, the family you choose.

[22:38] >> American Family Insurance.

[22:42] >> Well, the stars came out for the White

[22:43] House correspondents dinner in the

[22:45] nation's capital. President Obama

[22:47] enjoyed poking fun at his critics and

[22:49] the Republican party at this annual

[22:51] event, but he also made fun of his own

[22:54] administration. in power now for more

[22:56] than 100 days. He said, "I believe the

[22:58] next 100 days will be so successful that

[23:00] I'll be able to complete them in 72

[23:02] days." He also brought up his

[23:04] relationship with Secretary of State

[23:06] Hillary Clinton.

[23:08] We had been rivals during the campaign,

[23:11] but these days we could not be closer.

[23:13] In fact, uh the second she got back from

[23:16] Mexico, she pulled me into a hug and

[23:18] gave me a big kiss.

[23:21] Told me I better get down there myself.

[23:24] Well, President Obama also took a jab at

[23:26] former Vice President Dick Cheney,

[23:28] saying he couldn't make it since he was

[23:30] too busy working on his memoir

[23:31] tentatively titled How to Shoot Friends

[23:33] and Interrogate People.

[23:38] In tonight's economic crisis, many

[23:40] Americans are having trouble paying

[23:41] their credit card bills. The bank stress

[23:43] test, which came out last Thursday,

[23:45] found the biggest 19 banks in America

[23:48] could expect nearly 82 billion dollars

[23:50] in credit card losses by the end of

[23:53] 2010. Other analysts believe it could be

[23:55] more, but help could be on the way. A

[23:57] bill is heading to the Senate that would

[23:59] make it harder for credit card companies

[24:01] to raise rates and hide fees. With bank

[24:04] stress tests behind us, many are

[24:06] predicting that US stocks should rally

[24:08] this week. That would send the Dow into

[24:09] positive territory for the year. The S&P

[24:12] 500 is up 37% compared to the low of

[24:16] early March. A recent poll showed 65% of

[24:19] S&P companies exceeded expectations. Now

[24:22] that businesses are reporting first

[24:24] quarter earnings, experts will be

[24:25] looking for signs that the recession,

[24:27] which started in December 2007, is going

[24:30] away.

[24:33] We have some cloudier, cooler weather on

[24:35] the way for tomorrow, but the sunshine

[24:36] does return eventually. I'll let you

[24:38] know when coming up in your 7-day

[24:40] forecast. It's not just meat, cheese,

[24:42] and bun you get with your cheeseburger

[24:44] at the drive-thru. The additives you may

[24:46] not know that you're putting into your

[24:48] body.

[24:49] >> It's a plan that aims to generate more

[24:51] green power. But not everyone likes the

[24:52] idea why some Northwest

[24:54] environmentalists are opposing it.

[24:56] >> And thousands of evacuated Californians

[24:58] are returning to their homes tonight

[25:00] after wildfires forced them to leave.

[25:02] But not everyone has a home left

[25:04] standing. The latest still ahead. I'm

[25:06] Matt Smith. Coming up tonight on Oregon

[25:08] Sports Final, we'll catch up with

[25:09] Portland's Vic Carlson after watching

[25:11] his $15,000 horse steamroll past several

[25:14] multi-million dollar competitors in the

[25:16] Kentucky Derby. And what in the world

[25:18] was former Duck Aaron Brooks doing in

[25:20] this outfit after today's NBA playoff

[25:22] game? That answer tonight at 11:00 on

[25:24] Oregon Sports Final.

[25:26] >> You're watching the 10:00 news first

[27:08] to what might spark ADHD in teens. What

[27:10] the doctors are doing that could help

[27:12] them make a better diagnosis. Coming up,

[27:51] So, the insurance company and the folks

[27:53] that did this to me have some sort of

[27:55] arrangement. They get more work and the

[27:57] insurance company gets kickbacks. I see.

[28:03] >> But who wins here? Not me

[28:06] >> or me.

[28:12] >> Oh,

[28:15] >> it's your right to choose who fixes your

[28:17] car, not the insurance companies. You

[28:19] know, I'm on your side.

[28:25] In tonight's Healthw Watch, Oregon

[28:26] researchers have a new way to diagnose

[28:29] attention deficit hyperactivity disorder

[28:32] or ADHD. OHSU researchers teamed up with

[28:35] researchers from a Missouri University

[28:37] to use brain scans to diagnose the

[28:40] disorder along with other mental health

[28:42] programs. Now, using an MRI, they look

[28:44] at the brain at rest, hoping for clues

[28:46] to changes in brain functions. Now, OHSU

[28:49] researchers say the study has already

[28:51] shown communication between areas of the

[28:54] brain seems to be localized in kids, but

[28:57] it's distributed across the whole brain

[28:59] for adults.

[29:00] >> Ever wonder what added ingredients may

[29:03] be in your fast food burger? Researchers

[29:05] have found the most common things found

[29:06] in food, and some may surprise you.

[29:09] Citric acid is the most common

[29:11] preservative found in fast food

[29:12] restaurants. High fructose corn syrup is

[29:15] used by restaurants to sweeten menu

[29:17] items rather than real sugar.

[29:19] Researchers say nearly all fast food

[29:21] items have a color additive mixed in.

[29:24] Salt is found in most items as well,

[29:26] even shakes or sundaes. Restaurants use

[29:29] zanthan gum to thicken and smooth out

[29:31] the consistency of food.

[29:36] Well, fire season 2009 has calmed down

[29:38] thanks in part to mother nature. But

[29:40] fire investigators say the latest

[29:42] California fire was not because of her.

[29:45] Authorities say that wildfire started by

[29:47] a power tool used to cut back brush.

[29:50] Now, damp and cool weather helped

[29:51] firefighters gain ground on wildfires

[29:53] burning in and around Santa Barbara. The

[29:55] wildfire burned about 8700 acres and

[29:58] destroyed at least 77 homes. Many

[30:01] evacuees, though, did return to their

[30:03] neighborhoods today.

[30:05] >> Yeah. Well, I'm still in I'm still in

[30:07] shock. I mean, it's amazing that that

[30:09] that house is still standing cuz that

[30:12] house is gone and my neighbor's house is

[30:16] a really nice man and I feel so sorry

[30:19] for him.

[30:21] >> The 350 evacuees have been allowed to

[30:23] return home tonight and fire crews say

[30:25] the fire is about 55% contained with

[30:28] full containment expected by Wednesday.

[30:33] The governor of West Virginia declared a

[30:35] state of emergency after flash flooding

[30:38] caused widespread damage. Flooding from

[30:40] this weekend destroyed at least 300

[30:42] buildings knocked out power and sent at

[30:44] least one mobile home downstream.

[30:47] Thousands of other buildings have minor

[30:49] damage. 6 ines of rain fell in less than

[30:52] 24 hours, causing runoffs. And it was

[30:55] just too much water for small streams to

[30:57] handle. One little boy seems to be

[30:59] taking it well as he looks over the

[31:01] damage.

[31:02] Lost pretty much my bedroom. Lost

[31:04] everything. Lost my Xbox. Everything.

[31:08] Who knows what it's going to be like

[31:10] inside. We haven't saw it yet.

[31:12] Hopefully, we get a house.

[31:14] >> Oh, seven miners had been trapped

[31:16] underground due to the flood waters, but

[31:19] they managed to walk out this morning.

[31:23] >> Well, meteorologist Stephanie Kovich

[31:25] joins us now. And Seth, I'm thinking if

[31:27] we don't have just a beautifully sunny

[31:28] day, the next best thing on Mother's Day

[31:30] is just a dry day. And we did get that

[31:32] today.

[31:33] >> We did. And it was warm, too. Despite

[31:35] all the cloud cover, we still made it to

[31:36] 70° in Portland. Let's take a live look

[31:39] outside right now. It's pretty quiet. We

[31:41] have some sprinkles moving through.

[31:43] Here's a live look through our Wamtt

[31:44] River sky cam. We are going to see the

[31:46] winds pick up tomorrow and we do have a

[31:48] few off andon showers, but it's going to

[31:50] feel considerably cooler. Let's show you

[31:52] our live radar picture. Not a lot to

[31:54] talk about rainwise, but we have seen

[31:56] some showers move on through. A big

[31:58] difference over yesterday when we had

[32:00] that widespread sunshine. As you can

[32:02] see, a little bit of rain moving on in.

[32:04] A lot of this not even hitting the

[32:05] ground, but we are going to continue to

[32:07] see this rain develop and increase

[32:09] during the overnight hours. And we do

[32:11] expect to see some showers tomorrow,

[32:13] especially over the Cascades. We'll be

[32:15] seeing snow levels tomorrow night,

[32:17] dropping to around pass levels, but also

[32:19] some wet weather in central and eastern

[32:22] Oregon. Not a lot of that either for

[32:24] tomorrow. Just a few isolated showers

[32:27] there. Let's show you our time lapse

[32:28] from this evening. We did not get a lot

[32:30] in the way of sunbreaks today, but we

[32:32] had a few here and there. Temperatures

[32:33] still did warm up nicely to around 70°

[32:37] in Portland. 70 the official high at the

[32:40] airport, 77 in the Dallas, 72 in

[32:42] Pendleton, and 72 in Lrand. Overall, not

[32:45] a bad Mother's Day temperatures right

[32:47] now. Still in the mid60s. This is

[32:49] actually warmer than we are going to be

[32:50] for a high temperature for tomorrow.

[32:52] We're looking at upper 50s and lower 60s

[32:55] for highs for your Monday. 50 the

[32:57] overnight low for tonight. We're looking

[32:59] at light rain showers mainly to the west

[33:01] of the Cascades, although we've seen a

[33:03] few showers this evening east of the

[33:05] Cascades. The satellite picture showing

[33:07] that front still uh making its way

[33:10] through and we have a stronger system

[33:12] behind it. This is really going to uh

[33:14] create some active weather as we head

[33:15] into Tuesday. Just a few light rain

[33:17] showers as we get into tomorrow. We

[33:20] could see a few sun breaks, but it's

[33:21] overall looking like a mostly cloudy

[33:23] day. We'll see a few more sun breaks

[33:25] east of the Cascade. Some showers, windy

[33:27] at times, winds between 20 and 30 miles

[33:30] hour out along the gorge. Highs will be

[33:32] in the mid60s for a good part of central

[33:35] Oregon. Madress 65 the high for

[33:37] tomorrow. 66 in John Day and 69 in

[33:40] Burns. So hopefully you enjoyed the

[33:42] widespread sunshine there today for

[33:44] Mother's Day. for tomorrow. Rain and

[33:46] snow showers up in the Cascades. The

[33:48] snow level tomorrow during the day will

[33:50] be at 6,000 ft, but it is going to drop

[33:52] tomorrow night to around 4,000 ft. So,

[33:54] the passes could get a little dicey as

[33:57] we get toward Tuesday morning. But

[34:00] overall, travel conditions looking aokay

[34:02] if you need to uh cross the mountain

[34:04] passes for tomorrow. Tomorrow, expect

[34:06] breezy conditions out along the coast.

[34:08] It'll be gusty at times with winds of up

[34:10] to 20 or so miles per hour. Temperatures

[34:13] just in the mid-50s there. We'll just be

[34:15] in the upper 50s and lower 60s up and

[34:17] down the valley tomorrow. So, a big drop

[34:19] in temperatures. This is actually below

[34:20] average for this time of year. Normally,

[34:23] this time in May, right around Mother's

[34:25] Day, our high temperatures are in the

[34:26] mid60s. So, kind of a cool down on the

[34:29] way for tomorrow. Cooler temperatures,

[34:31] breezy conditions with those winds

[34:32] between 10 and 20 miles hour. Of course,

[34:35] if you get closer to the gorge, you can

[34:37] expect gustier conditions. Keep the

[34:39] umbrella handy. Although, I don't think

[34:41] we're going to see any real heavy

[34:42] showers. There's a chance that it'll be

[34:44] just unsettled enough on Tuesday. We

[34:46] could see some isolated thunderstorms,

[34:48] but that will mainly be in the higher

[34:51] terrain. For those of us here in the

[34:52] Portland area, it's a tiny chance of

[34:54] some thunderstorm activity on Tuesday.

[34:57] So, tomorrow plays out like this. We

[34:58] start things off on the mild side. We

[35:00] just make it to a high of 60 for

[35:02] tomorrow. Some spots won't even make it

[35:04] out of the upper 50s. We're expecting

[35:05] upper 50s on Tuesday. Kind of breezy,

[35:08] showery, very spring-like for the next

[35:10] couple of days. Then another round of

[35:12] widespread rain Wednesday into Thursday.

[35:15] The weather does start to improve though

[35:16] as we get into next weekend. We will be

[35:18] back in the 70s with plenty of sunshine.

[35:22] So just off and on rain showers for the

[35:24] most part. We're not looking at any

[35:26] widespread soakers, but uh some heavier

[35:28] showers possible on Tuesday and

[35:30] Wednesday. Tune in to Andy Carson

[35:32] tomorrow on Good Day Oregon for the

[35:34] latest on your weather.

[35:37] >> Crashes and explosions are in tonight's

[35:50] the driver hit that caused the blast.

[39:42] >> Stand by the final cut in 3 2 1. Cue

[39:45] them.

[39:46] And the final cut begins with news

[39:48] across America tonight in a plane crash

[39:50] in Nevada that kills all five people on

[39:53] board. Investigators say a twin engine

[39:55] plane crashed in western Nevada late

[39:57] yesterday afternoon. Police believe the

[39:59] victims, four men and one woman, died of

[40:02] blunt force trauma. Now, witnesses say

[40:04] they saw the plane nose dive into a town

[40:07] but didn't see any smoke or fire. The

[40:10] Federal Aviation Administration is now

[40:11] investigating the crash.

[40:14] Police arrested a father on suspicion of

[40:16] stabbing his two little girls to death.

[40:18] Their mother called police yesterday

[40:20] morning to say he had killed the girls

[40:23] and was trying to kill her. The suspect

[40:25] also stabbed himself and his wife. The

[40:27] girls ages six and two months died at an

[40:29] area hospital. Authorities booked the

[40:31] man on two counts of murder and one

[40:33] count of attempted murder late last

[40:35] night. Investigators though still

[40:36] haven't determined a motive. The FCAT

[40:39] heads to Rhode Island now where a car

[40:41] crash caused a major house explosion.

[40:43] Authorities say several first responders

[40:45] were hurt in the explosion Saturday.

[40:47] They say a driver lost control of their

[40:49] SUV and crashed into the home, causing a

[40:52] natural gas leak. Crews were on the

[40:54] scene when something sparked the gas.

[40:57] >> I heard like a big boom when I see some

[41:00] man coming out the van. And then when he

[41:03] came out the van, he was like, "Don't

[41:04] call the cops." Police say the driver

[41:06] ran from the accident scene. They're

[41:08] still looking for that suspect. The

[41:10] injured crews are all expected to

[41:12] recover. Tonight, a Colorado mother is

[41:15] begging for crooks to return one very

[41:17] special necklace. Her daughter died four

[41:20] years ago in a car crash, and she put

[41:22] her daughter's ashes in a necklace. When

[41:24] burglars broke into her home last week,

[41:26] they stole $3,000 worth of jewelry along

[41:29] with a gun. The victim says the suspect

[41:32] likely didn't realize what they took and

[41:34] she hopes they will now return it.

[41:36] Colorado Springs police say they have

[41:38] notified area pawn shops about the

[41:40] priceless necklace.

[41:42] Police shot a woman who they say tried

[41:44] to use a stolen credit card at a couple

[41:46] high-end stores on Chicago's Magnificent

[41:48] Mile. Chicago authorities say the

[41:50] suspect tried to take an officer's

[41:52] weapon during a struggle and that's when

[41:54] she was shot. Investigators say the man

[41:57] believed to be her getaway driver tried

[41:59] to escape by blending in with the other

[42:01] shoppers. Officers eventually caught up

[42:03] with him. The woman remains hospitalized

[42:06] tonight.

[42:07] >> Well, a Christian high school in Ohio is

[42:09] expected to suspend a student all

[42:11] because he decided to go to a public

[42:14] school prom with his girlfriend. The

[42:16] teen attends a fundamentalist Baptist

[42:18] school that prohibits dancing, rock

[42:20] music, and handholding. School

[42:22] administrators told the boy if he

[42:24] attended the prom, he would be

[42:25] suspended. He went anyway because he

[42:28] thinks he didn't do anything wrong.

[42:30] >> Prom itself, I mean, I don't see

[42:32] anything wrong with it, and I'm not

[42:34] going to change my viewpoints on

[42:35] something just because someone else

[42:37] doesn't like it.

[42:38] >> Now, his stepfather says the strict

[42:40] rules shouldn't apply outside of the

[42:43] school and may file a lawsuit against

[42:45] it. The senior will get his diploma.

[42:47] However, it will be a week after the

[42:49] rest of his classmates graduate.

[42:52] If you heard a wild turkey was

[42:53] responsible for an accident on a New

[42:55] Jersey highway, you might think it had

[42:57] to do with a drunk driving accident. But

[42:59] that's not the case here, as a wild

[43:01] turkey has caused yet another accident

[43:03] on the highway. Now, this is a picture

[43:05] of the car after the driver ran into the

[43:07] turkey. You can just make out some

[43:09] feathers there in the windshield. She

[43:11] says she was going about 60 miles an

[43:13] hour when it happened.

[43:16] I saw something very dark and very big

[43:20] go to my windshield and windshield was

[43:23] broke and whole glass go all over.

[43:27] >> Now she says she's thankful she had her

[43:29] glasses on to protect her eyes from the

[43:31] windshield in March. Also in New Jersey

[43:34] there was another crash with a turkey

[43:36] going right through a windshield.

[43:40] The final cut now takes you to news

[43:42] around the world as violence in Pakistan

[43:44] is growing and government officials fear

[43:46] it will only get worse. People are

[43:48] streaming out of the area trying to head

[43:50] to safety. The UN says more than half a

[43:53] million have left or are trying to.

[43:55] They're leaving because the fighting

[43:57] continues. According to the Pakistani

[43:59] army, in the last 24 hours, just in the

[44:02] SWAT valley about 200 Taliban have been

[44:05] killed.

[44:06] In Sri Lanka's war zone, at least 378

[44:09] people were killed in a heavy storm of

[44:11] artillery attacks and the United Nations

[44:14] says hundreds more were hurt in the

[44:16] blast. At least hundred of the victims

[44:18] were children. It is the bloodiest

[44:21] attack on the Tamil ethnic group since

[44:23] the country's civil war began. UN

[44:25] figures from last month showed that

[44:27] nearly 6,500 people have been killed in

[44:29] the three months of fighting.

[44:31] A huge protest in Brazil brought

[44:33] hundreds together as they fight the

[44:35] criminalization of marijuana. People

[44:38] from more than 250 cities came to Rio di

[44:40] Janeiro to demonstrate in favor of the

[44:42] law, which legalizes the drug. Brazil's

[44:45] environment minister says they must

[44:47] change the law to get the profits from

[44:49] the drug out of the hands of criminals.

[44:52] Tightroppe walkers from all over the

[44:55] world walked a fine line high above the

[44:57] Han River in South Korea. Contestants

[44:59] had one hour to walk across the tight

[45:02] rope. Mother nature certainly didn't

[45:04] make the trip easy. High winds blew

[45:05] during the competition. A safety net

[45:08] though was set up under the wire. This

[45:10] year's winner made it across in just 10

[45:12] minutes and 17 seconds. And you see

[45:14] right here, he was the only competitor

[45:15] who did not use a bar to aid in the

[45:18] crossing.

[45:21] Well, caught on camera tonight, a car

[45:23] where it's not really supposed to be.

[45:25] Emergency crews in Germany had to rescue

[45:27] a man whose car landed on a roof.

[45:30] Authorities say the driver missed a turn

[45:32] and a railroad embankment pretty much

[45:34] acted as a platform. That car was

[45:36] launched into the air and traveled 98 ft

[45:39] before it came to rest on the roof. The

[45:41] driver did suffer some serious injuries.

[45:46] The final cut goes local now. Rock and

[45:48] roll is helping one local high school

[45:50] trying to make sure its doors don't

[45:51] close in tonight's classrooms in crisis.

[45:54] Members from the bands Clap Your Hand,

[45:56] Say Yeah. Los Lobos, and REMM were on

[45:58] hand tonight at Mississippi Studios in

[46:00] North Portland. The musicians put on a

[46:03] concert to help the Leadership and

[46:04] Entrepreneurship Public Charter School.

[46:07] On March 30th, the Portland Public

[46:09] School Board voted to close the school,

[46:11] but administrators are trying to raise

[46:12] money to keep the school going. Steve

[46:14] Berlin is a member of Los Loos, and he

[46:17] also has a daughter going to the school.

[46:19] during their school day, they're also

[46:21] learning about entrepreneurialship and

[46:22] like how not just to do it, but actually

[46:24] how to build a business and to think

[46:26] creatively. It's an extraordinary

[46:28] experience.

[46:29] >> He says teachers have also taken a 10%

[46:32] pay cut to try and keep the school

[46:33] going.

[46:37] >> President Obama wants to rid the country

[46:38] of its dependence on fossil fuels and

[46:41] help us all live green. One of his

[46:43] initiatives, harness wind energy for

[46:46] power. But it may be tough to get some

[46:48] Oregon environmentalists on board. For

[46:50] KPTV, Dan Springer has a story.

[46:54] The heart of President Obama's energy

[46:56] plan, replacing fossil fuels with green

[46:58] alternatives, is facing increasing

[47:00] opposition from an unlikely source. Some

[47:02] environmentalists have successfully

[47:04] fought a wind farm at the Oregon

[47:06] Washington border. They're trying to

[47:07] block a massive solar plant in the

[47:09] Mojave Desert. And now Umatillaa County,

[47:12] Oregon is considering a ban on wind

[47:14] power in the foothills of the Blue

[47:16] Mountains.

[47:17] >> We all want to be as green as we can be,

[47:19] but at what cost to take everything from

[47:22] us? We This valley could be surrounded

[47:25] by.

[47:26] >> Richard Jolly says 400 ft wind turbines

[47:29] are a birdkilling eyesore. The developer

[47:31] argues the danger to birds is

[47:33] exaggerated, but admits every big energy

[47:35] project has its downside. If we hold out

[47:38] for that perfect uh environmental silver

[47:41] bullet, if you will, uh it will be

[47:43] always 15 years down the road, we have

[47:45] to make incremental progress.

[47:47] >> For decades, environmentalists have

[47:49] talked about big oil, painting the

[47:51] petroleum industry as greedy and

[47:53] destructive. Today, we're starting to

[47:56] hear similar language applied to

[47:58] renewables. Instead of eco-friendly

[48:00] green power, increasingly, it's big wind

[48:03] and big solar. Large environmental

[48:06] groups bristle at the idea of dissension

[48:08] in the ranks.

[48:09] >> We are working very aggressively to make

[48:11] a planning process happen with

[48:13] utilities, with industry, with local

[48:14] groups, all at the table.

[48:16] >> The goal is to get 25% of the nation's

[48:18] power from renewable sources by 2025.

[48:22] The White House contends that will

[48:23] create millions of jobs and has the

[48:25] support of business and environmental

[48:27] leaders. But many local activists say we

[48:29] need to slow this rush to renewables or

[48:32] risk trading one power problem for

[48:34] another. In Seattle, Dan Springer, Fox

[48:36] News.

[48:40] >> Well, many people dream of getting paid

[48:42] big bucks to blog. That's pretty good,

[48:44] right? Well, there are some ways you can

[48:46] make that happen. As long as you're

[48:48] dedicated to it, you can help find your

[48:50] a niche topic that you are interested

[48:52] in. That will make it easier for you to

[48:54] talk about it. You're also going to want

[48:55] to seek out advertisers and to add to

[48:57] your blog. Some companies pay per click

[48:59] on their ad while others pay per page

[49:02] view. Some companies will pay you to

[49:04] write about their products and services.

[49:06] And for those companies, they will pay

[49:08] anywhere between $10 and $20 per post.

[49:10] Though some can pay up to $1,000 per

[49:12] post. And experts say don't expect to

[49:15] quit your day job by blogging. On

[49:17] average, bloggers make about $6,000 a

[49:20] year. And finally, this comes pretty

[49:22] naturally. Make sure you don't have any

[49:23] grammar or spelling errors in your

[49:26] blocks. All right, starting tomorrow, a

[49:28] first class stamp jumps two pennies to

[49:30] 44 cents. The US Postal Service is

[49:32] raising rates to make up for a massive

[49:34] budget gap. Remember though, the forever

[49:36] stamps will be valid regardless of price

[49:39] increases. Mailing a postcard now costs

[49:42] 28.

[49:46] Hollywood is buzzing, but not that

[49:47] surprised at the latest Star Trek flick

[49:49] beam to the top of the weekend box

[49:51] office. Star Trek earned more than $76

[49:54] million on its opening weekend. That is

[49:56] 26 million more than the production

[49:58] company expected. Last week's number

[50:01] one, X-Men Origins Wolverine dropped to

[50:03] the second spot. It rad in another 27

[50:06] million in its second weekend in

[50:08] theaters. The romantic comedy Ghost of

[50:10] Girlfriend's Past took third at the

[50:12] weekend box office. It had more than $10

[50:14] million in ticket sales. Jay Leno gave a

[50:17] little comic relief to a city in Ohio

[50:19] battered by layoffs and long-term

[50:21] unemployment. It's all part of his free

[50:23] comedy stimulus tour. Leno put on two

[50:26] shows in the town of about 12,000

[50:28] people. People waited in line for hours

[50:30] to get the free tickets. And that is Fox

[50:33] 12's final cut for tonight.

[50:36] >> Well, still to come, restaurants have

[53:15] >> Hey, Oregon, are you ready for some good

[53:17] news? Premier Hyundai has great news.

[53:20] Hyundai Accent only $79.95. That's

[53:22] right, $79.95. Hyundai Elantre GLS just

[53:26] $99.95. And Hyundai Santa Fe an unheard

[53:28] of $1,79.95. That's up to 5,900 off

[53:31] MSRP. And only Hyundai can say we've got

[53:34] your back with a Hyundai assurance and

[53:36] America's best warranty. 10-year 100,000

[53:38] mi powertrain coverage. Good news, great

[53:41] deals. Number one for a reason. Premier

[53:43] Hyundai in Milwaukee.

[53:46] Welcome back to the 10:00 news. We're

[53:48] just moments away from Oregon Sports

[53:50] Final. And the question tonight, how

[53:51] much basketball is too much basketball?

[53:54] Greg Odin is one of three Blazers

[53:55] invited to try out for the US national

[53:57] team, but is that a good thing? It's

[53:59] hard to say if Aaron Brooks was dressed

[54:01] for success today, but he turned out a

[54:03] career game along with a win over the

[54:04] Lakers. So, apparently the former Oregon

[54:06] Duck knows what he is doing. We'll catch

[54:08] up with a Portland man who bought his

[54:10] horse for a bargain and then watched it

[54:12] finish among the top three in the

[54:14] Kentucky Derby. He's musket man owner

[54:16] Vic Carlson. Former Wilsonville star

[54:19] Carl Summer graduated early to begin his

[54:21] football career at Oregon State, but now

[54:22] he's at Portland State. So, what gives?

[54:25] We'll have that story. All that and more

[54:26] coming up at the top of the hour on

[54:28] Oregon Sports Vital.

[54:33] >> Restaurants across the United States

[54:34] have seen their profits fall thanks to

[54:36] the economic crisis.

[54:37] >> Yeah. And as a result, owners are

[54:39] resorting rather to more clever tactics

[54:42] as they try to increase their business.

[54:44] For KPTV tonight, Anita Vogel gives us a

[54:46] look.

[54:50] >> Pizza and the Four Seasons. Tacos that

[54:53] come with limo rides. Necessity is the

[54:55] mother of marketing in tough economic

[54:57] times and restaurants are rolling out

[54:59] promotions they hope will bring

[55:01] customers back to the table.

[55:03] >> Restaurants are entertainment and I

[55:05] think not just this chain but other

[55:08] chains are are trying to think of

[55:09] creative ways to stimulate their

[55:11] business to bring customers into the

[55:14] restaurants to get them out of their

[55:15] homes. At California Pizza Kitchen,

[55:17] diners get thank you cards with prizes

[55:20] ranging from 10% off to cash and luxury

[55:23] vacations.

[55:24] >> What you want to make them feel like is

[55:26] that the restaurant is in this with you

[55:28] and they know it's a hard time and

[55:30] they're doing everything that they can

[55:31] to sort of make it easier for you to

[55:33] come to them.

[55:35] >> One LA restaurant is doing just that. If

[55:38] you have a party of eight for lunch,

[55:40] they'll pick you up in a limousine.

[55:42] >> We wanted to put fun back into lunch to

[55:44] begin with. Uh, with the economy the way

[55:47] it is, you know, everybody needs to get

[55:49] back together.

[55:50] >> Kentucky Fried Chicken is taking it on

[55:52] the road, deploying crews to fill

[55:54] potholes across the nation, leaving

[55:57] their mark on city streets. But while

[55:59] many restaurants are offering a little

[56:01] extra, not all are adopting that

[56:03] approach. Some eeries in New York and

[56:06] California have started charging for

[56:07] bread and butter, even tap water, making

[56:10] all those special deals out there all

[56:13] the more appetizing. In Los Angeles,

[56:16] Anita Vogle, Fox News.

[56:19] >> All right, Steph's here with one last

[56:20] look at that 7-day forecast. Cooler

[56:22] weather for tomorrow. We'll see highs

[56:24] around 60, some rain showers. Looks like

[56:26] a chance of showers each day, but next

[56:28] weekend looking nice with highs in the

[56:30] lower 70s once again.

[56:32] >> All right, we'll keep our fingers

[56:33] crossed. Thank you, Steph, and thanks

[56:34] for joining us tonight.

[56:35] >> That's right. Don't go anywhere, though.

[60:18] >> Would you like that to hurt now or

[60:26] >> These heartburn medicines make you

[60:27] choose between hurting now or later.

[60:29] Pepsid complete doesn't. It starts to
