[0:02] Tonight, Simon spills about a certain
[0:04] judge on American Idol. What he says
[0:06] will happen next season. If you're not
[0:09] careful, you could soon pay a big price
[0:11] to smoke. And we're not talking about
[0:13] your health. Why your savings could take
[0:15] a hit the next time you finish that
[0:16] cigarette.
[0:18] Danger inside a school gym.
[0:20] >> Let me tell you, you would never
[0:22] you would never wish this ever on
[0:25] anyone. The Fox 12 investigators explain
[0:27] how you could be in for a lifetime of
[0:29] pain just by setting foot inside. But
[0:32] first, a local man accused of abusing
[0:34] his kids for entertainment.
[0:36] >> They kids play usually at their property
[0:38] and a few times came to our house to to
[0:41] play in our backyard.
[0:42] >> It's outrageous behavior and police say
[0:45] the man thought it was funny. First on
[0:47] Fox.
[0:49] >> Good evening. Thanks for joining us. I'm
[0:50] Shauna Parson
[0:51] >> and I'm Wayne Garcia. And first on Fox
[0:53] tonight, Salem police are investigating
[0:54] a surprising case of abuse out of Marian
[0:57] County. Cops arrested a man accused of
[0:59] putting a dog shock collar on all four
[1:02] of his children. Police busted Todd
[1:05] Markham after their investigation led
[1:06] them to believe that he put the shock
[1:08] collar on his kids for entertainment.
[1:10] KPTV's Chad Carter is live in Salem
[1:12] tonight with the details. Chad?
[1:14] >> Yeah, and Wayne, it was a caller just
[1:15] like this one you see here that police
[1:17] say used as pure entertainment.
[1:23] I am just I
[1:25] I I'm speechless. So,
[1:28] it's hard to say what I'm feel. Words of
[1:31] surprise from Natalyia Camel after
[1:33] learning the man she saw often across
[1:35] the street have been arrested after
[1:37] police say he used a dog shock collar on
[1:39] his own kids. Police say they arrested
[1:42] Todd Markham today after their
[1:43] investigation found he had used the
[1:45] collar on all four of his kids between
[1:47] the ages of nine and three. Police also
[1:50] report Markham admitted to using the
[1:52] collar on his kids because he thought it
[1:54] was funny and found entertainment in
[1:56] chasing his three-year-old around with
[1:57] the collar, making him cry at just the
[2:00] sight of it.
[2:00] >> They have small dog, very small, like it
[2:02] looks like a puppy. I asked him how old
[2:04] is their dog, but it's just one year or
[2:07] three years old. A small dog.
[2:08] >> Police would not confirm where it
[2:10] happened or where Markham lived, but DMV
[2:12] records show his last address at this
[2:14] house in Northeast Salem. All of it a
[2:17] surprise for Camel, who says her kids
[2:19] often played with Markhams.
[2:21] >> He was absolutely polite and good,
[2:26] nothing strange.
[2:26] >> And tonight, Markhamm is at the Marian
[2:28] County Jail facing four counts of
[2:30] criminal mistreatment.
[2:33] >> And also tonight, those children are
[2:35] with their mother and the case is being
[2:38] investigated by the Department of Human
[2:39] Services. Live in Salem tonight, Chad
[2:41] Carter, the 10:00 news. Tonight, Tiger
[2:44] Police needs your help identifying a man
[2:46] who was found dead seven years ago. Take
[2:48] a look at the sketch of the victim.
[2:49] Police say a train hit and killed this
[2:51] man on October 7th, 2001. And to this
[2:54] day, they have not been able to ID him.
[2:57] At the time of his death, the
[2:58] unidentified man was described as white
[3:00] in his late 30s to early 40s, 5'9 in
[3:03] tall, 180 pounds. Investigators think he
[3:06] may have connections to the Ashland and
[3:08] Cellwood area of Portland. If you think
[3:11] you might know who he is, uh, please
[3:13] call Tiger Police.
[3:16] >> A lost shoe may help the FBI FBI track
[3:19] down Fox 12's most wanted, who robbed a
[3:21] Gresham bank. It happened at the West
[3:23] Coast Bank on Northwest Burnside near
[3:25] Eastman Parkway this afternoon. The FBI
[3:28] is now working with Gresham police who
[3:29] say the robber got away with some cash
[3:31] but lost his shoe on the way out. We
[3:34] talked to one man who works nearby who
[3:35] was surprised by the robbery. It's
[3:38] really surprising that there was ever a
[3:39] bank robbing in Gresham. Like, I'd never
[3:41] expect something like that to happen.
[3:44] >> The FBI describes the suspect as a white
[3:46] man in his mid20s. He's about 510 and
[3:49] 185 lbs. He was wearing a black zip-up
[3:52] hoodie and white tennis shoes, though he
[3:54] is now down to just one.
[3:56] >> Tonight, deputies need your help
[3:58] tracking down another one of Fox 12's
[3:59] most wanted, a woman with a long
[4:01] criminal history. Deputies say Tanya
[4:03] Davis violated her parole after being
[4:05] convicted of burglary in November of
[4:07] 2006. She's also been arrested and
[4:09] convicted for a number of other crimes
[4:11] in Oregon and California, including
[4:13] assault, prostitution, and drug
[4:14] possession. She last lived in East
[4:16] Portland's Hazlewood neighborhood, but
[4:18] may also be in Vancouver. She is an
[4:20] African-American woman, 5'6, 180 pounds.
[4:23] She has black hair and brown eyes.
[4:26] New details tonight as two men already
[4:28] behind bars are accused of shooting a
[4:30] Vancouver police sergeant. Dalon Berg
[4:33] and Jeffrey Reed are already being held
[4:35] at the Multa County Jail. Now they're
[4:37] going to be transferred to the Clark
[4:38] County Jail. Authorities say they're
[4:40] connected to the shooting of a police
[4:42] sergeant last month. You might remember
[4:43] the story. The sergeant was shot in the
[4:46] chest, but the bullet was able to stick
[4:48] in his vest. The two men face several
[4:51] charges. A man charged with shooting his
[4:53] wife in the stomach is avoiding trial.
[4:56] Joshua Ernststrom took a plea deal today
[4:58] and he was sentenced to 27 months in
[5:00] prison. His trial was set to begin
[5:02] tomorrow. Police arrested Ernststrom
[5:04] last October after they found his wife
[5:06] with a gunshot wound to the stomach.
[5:08] Police say Ernstrom called 911
[5:10] immediately after the shooting and was
[5:11] still at the apartment when police
[5:13] arrived.
[5:14] >> Tonight, we're learning more about a man
[5:15] accused of trying to kill his
[5:16] ex-girlfriend. Investigators say George
[5:18] Ardizone offered a man more than $13,000
[5:22] to kill the woman, but the so-called
[5:24] hitman was really a police informant and
[5:26] deputies were waiting in the wings to
[5:28] make their arrest. KPTV's Jamie Wilson
[5:30] has the story.
[5:32] >> I don't think it's right. I don't I
[5:34] don't really believe he'd do that cuz he
[5:35] was in love with her big time.
[5:37] >> Today, this man we're calling Jim is
[5:39] completely stunned by the charges
[5:41] against his friend George Ardone. Jim
[5:43] has been living on Ardisone's property
[5:45] here in Woodland, helping him fix it up.
[5:48] And he says it was all for George's
[5:50] ex-girlfriend.
[5:51] >> He's pretty pretty kind. I mean, he if
[5:53] he says he's going to do something, he
[5:55] did it. I mean, he put this her property
[5:57] all together for her to move out of
[5:58] Utilia so she could get out of what she
[6:00] was doing.
[6:00] >> But court records showed the
[6:02] relationship turned violent two months
[6:04] ago, and Ardone's ex filed for a
[6:06] restraining order. Officials say the two
[6:09] were also business partners and their
[6:11] breakup was going to cost Ardone
[6:13] $50,000.
[6:15] So last week, police say he tried to
[6:17] hire a man to kill her. They say Ardone
[6:20] offered him $13,300
[6:22] to attack the woman. Records show he at
[6:24] least wanted her hospitalized and quote
[6:27] drinking out of a straw, but he'd pay
[6:29] more to have her killed along with her
[6:31] daughter. But cops say Ardone didn't
[6:34] know that his hitman of choice was a
[6:36] police informant. So he alerted Multma
[6:39] County deputies. They set up a meeting
[6:41] at Home Depot and arrested Ardone trying
[6:44] to make the deal.
[6:45] >> Yeah, he was angry with her um cuz he
[6:50] seemed to think she had a boyfriend. I
[6:51] don't know for sure or not.
[6:52] >> Jim says he knew George's relationship
[6:54] had gone sour, but he never expected it
[6:57] to end like this.
[6:59] >> It was weird. I mean, I didn't think it
[7:01] would ever go to this far.
[7:02] >> Jamie Wilson, the 10:00 news.
[7:05] >> George Ardone is locked up in the Multma
[7:07] County Jail tonight without bail.
[7:09] >> Prosecutors continue presenting
[7:10] testimony and evidence they want used in
[7:12] the trial of Brooke Wilberger's
[7:14] suspected killer. Today was the second
[7:16] day of pre-trial hearings in the case
[7:18] against Joel Courtourtney. An OSU
[7:20] student told the court today that she
[7:21] walked away from Courtney on the same
[7:23] day he allegedly kidnapped the
[7:25] 19-year-old back in 2004. Courtney took
[7:28] notes during the testimony and rarely
[7:30] looked at the woman. The woman says that
[7:32] Courtney asked her for directions near
[7:34] campus and she had to repeat it twice.
[7:37] >> He asked me for directions to the
[7:39] athletic offices. Um I was nervous. I
[7:43] felt like I was in a situation.
[7:46] >> That hearing is set to conclude next
[7:48] Tuesday. Today, the prosecutor says he
[7:50] will call another sex crime victim of
[7:52] Courtney's to testify and a judge will
[7:54] then decide exactly what can be used in
[7:57] the trial itself.
[7:58] >> Now, Portland's first weather at 10.
[8:01] >> I'm Drew Jackson filling in for Mark
[8:03] Nelson on a night that is noticeably
[8:05] drier than it was last night. Although
[8:07] there are a few showers around, some of
[8:08] those showers are picking up a bit as
[8:10] well. Let's start with live radar here.
[8:11] We'll zoom in closer to a cluster of
[8:13] showers out over the coast range. even
[8:15] some yellow and signs of orange in
[8:18] there. Over the last few hours, we've
[8:19] seen these showers kind of increase as
[8:21] they're moving from southwest to
[8:23] northeast and some of them may spill
[8:25] into the Wamtt Valley, western sections
[8:27] of it here over the next couple hours.
[8:28] Overall though, the rain will be
[8:30] increasing throughout the night. Take a
[8:31] look at the satellite picture here. We
[8:32] had a break from the rain for much of
[8:34] today, but those clouds are advancing on
[8:36] in. So, over the next few hours, the
[8:38] rain will increase. Lows will be down in
[8:40] the 40s, and it does look like it'll be
[8:41] a wet start to tomorrow. How long does
[8:44] the rain stick around and what does the
[8:46] weekend look like? Those forecast
[8:47] details coming up in a few minutes.
[8:49] >> People living in a northwest Portland
[8:51] apartment complex are back home tonight
[8:52] after heavy wind knocked down a tree.
[8:55] The tree fell onto the Cedar Mill
[8:56] Crossing apartments last night. We
[8:58] talked to a woman who says crews removed
[8:59] the tree today and got the power back on
[9:01] and no one was hurt. The weather also
[9:04] forced women out of the Salvation Army
[9:06] shelter in Portland. A leaky roof
[9:07] started at about 7 this morning at the
[9:09] shelter on Northwest 5th near Burnside.
[9:12] All of the women staying there had to be
[9:13] moved to other places for safety
[9:15] reasons. The Salvation Army says the
[9:17] recent winds and rain likely caused the
[9:19] leak. Workers spent the day fixing
[9:21] ceiling tiles and it reopened tonight
[9:23] around 5:00.
[9:25] >> The 10:00 news is just getting started.
[9:28] >> You might want to think twice before
[9:29] making a donation to a local church.
[9:32] It's
[9:32] >> just very unfortunate that uh they're
[9:34] using the church's name in connection
[9:36] with that.
[9:36] >> The local pastor who says someone's
[9:38] collecting money all for a fake cause.
[9:42] Hidden dangers in your school's gym,
[9:44] even at your favorite store.
[9:45] >> The pain is so great, it's nauseating.
[9:47] >> What you need to know to avoid becoming
[9:49] a victim. Police say a driver was
[9:52] painting her nails when she hit and
[9:54] killed a motorcyclist. Why she's only
[9:56] charged tonight with not slowing down.
[10:00] Putting rumors to rest. What Paula Abdul
[10:02] is saying about a past drug addiction
[10:04] and what she really thinks about idol
[10:07] rival judge Cara Diguardi. And one storm
[10:10] moved out, but another one is moving in.
[10:12] Details about the return of the rain
[10:14] coming up.

[11:37] they gave the mayor special treatment
[11:39] during a car crash. The story is coming
[11:41] up on the 10:00 news. First, live local.
[11:46] The signs are beginning.
[11:50] The threat is growing.
[11:53] The world is waiting for the truth to be
[11:57] revealed.
[11:58] You're talking about the moment of
[12:00] creation.

[12:11] >> Angels and Demons? Rated PG-13, May

[12:16] Have you noticed there are roads in
[12:17] Oregon that unfold like love letters
[12:19] that you never want to stop reading?
[12:21] They say, "Dear Oregonian, thank you for
[12:24] taking part in my curvy curves and
[12:26] insane vistas. Let's never stop
[12:28] gathering the moss and the wisdom that
[12:31] gave us the craggy good looks that
[12:32] people from other places envy a little.
[12:35] These past 150 years, you've helped make
[12:38] me what I am. And if I do say so, vice
[12:41] versa."
[12:45] Coming up tonight on the 11:00 news, a
[12:47] rash of car theft says local police on
[12:49] the defense. the fourth grader who put
[12:51] Condisa Rice on the spot. The question
[12:53] he asked her and why the economic crisis
[12:55] forced crews to destroy a newly built
[12:58] housing development. I'm Kevin War. Join
[13:00] us at 11.
[13:07] A local church has a warning for its
[13:08] congregation tonight. Someone scamming
[13:10] people out of money in the church's
[13:12] name. The imposters are selling raffle
[13:14] tickets, pretending it's a fundraiser
[13:16] for New Life Fellowship Church. But Long
[13:18] View police say it's all a scam. KPB's
[13:21] Mark Henrahan is live in Long View
[13:23] tonight with the very latest. Mark.
[13:25] >> Well, Shauna, the head pastor here
[13:27] thinks the imposters are posing as
[13:28] members of this church because he says
[13:30] the congregation is so big and so
[13:32] giving. Well, tonight he just hopes
[13:34] nobody is ripped off.
[13:37] Inside New Life Fellowship Church
[13:38] tonight, Pastor Charles Fischer is busy
[13:41] answering calls.
[13:42] >> I believe the first calls came in
[13:44] yesterday. He says several people,
[13:46] including folks in his congregation, are
[13:48] wondering about a new fundraiser and the
[13:50] people asking for donations.
[13:52] >> They're saying that it's for Bible
[13:55] school or Sunday school or or something.
[13:57] >> The callers claim they've been
[13:59] approached by a group of young people at
[14:00] this Fred Meyer and at a nearby park
[14:03] trying to sell raffle tickets in the
[14:04] church's names. They say the tickets
[14:06] look legit, even have the church's name
[14:08] printed on them. The only problem, there
[14:10] is no fundraiser. New Life Fellowship is
[14:14] has not endorsed this. We don't know
[14:15] anything about this.
[14:16] >> Instead, he says the people who are
[14:18] trying to sell tickets are imposters
[14:20] posing as members of the church and
[14:22] using its name as a ploy to try to cash
[14:24] in on people's goodwill.
[14:26] >> I think it's terrible. It's totally
[14:27] despicable.
[14:28] >> I think it's pretty low of them to try
[14:30] to get money that way.
[14:32] >> The crooks have been reported to police,
[14:33] but so far have not been busted.
[14:36] Meanwhile, Pastor Fischer,
[14:37] >> this is a first for us,
[14:38] >> is trying to get the word out about the
[14:40] scam. He says New Life Fellowship Church
[14:42] does not solicit donations by selling
[14:44] raffle tickets, but raises money mainly
[14:46] through its Sunday offerings.
[14:48] >> It's just very unfortunate that uh
[14:50] they're using the church's name in
[14:51] connection with that.
[14:52] >> As one of the larger churches in the
[14:54] area, Pastor Fischer admits they're an
[14:56] easy target and he thinks the Crooks are
[14:58] using their reputation as a way to earn
[15:00] a quick buck.
[15:01] >> The name's well known throughout the
[15:03] community. So, uh that would probably be
[15:05] why somebody that would want to do
[15:07] something like this.
[15:09] Now, Pastor Fischer is asking that
[15:11] people not give money to these people.
[15:12] Instead, he says, "Call the
[15:14] authorities." In Long View tonight, Mark
[15:15] Henrahan, the 10:00 news.
[15:18] >> Well, coming back from active duty can
[15:20] be a big adjustment for many veterans.
[15:22] And some are finding themselves in
[15:23] trouble with the law. A local veteran
[15:25] says not only did he get two DUIs, he
[15:28] almost had to pay thousands of dollars
[15:30] for drug treatment. Well, now he wants
[15:31] other veterans to know about the
[15:33] cost-saving treatment available to them.
[15:35] KPTV Stephanie Cullivich is live now
[15:37] with his story that you'll see only on
[15:38] 12. Stephanie,
[15:39] >> well, Jason Dour says as part of his
[15:42] sentence for that second DUI, he lost
[15:44] his driver's license for a year. And he
[15:46] was also ordered to complete a drug and
[15:48] alcohol treatment program that included
[15:50] random urine analysis and 90 days of
[15:53] proven sobriety. He says he wishes
[15:55] someone would have told him that a full
[15:57] drug and alcohol treatment program was
[15:59] available right here at the VA hospital.
[16:03] They just say, "Here's where you can
[16:05] go."
[16:05] >> Jason Dour spent eight years in the army
[16:08] and served in Operation Desert Storm
[16:10] until he was injured back in 1990. He
[16:13] says he had no idea one of the benefits
[16:16] he had as a veteran was free drug and
[16:18] alcohol treatment.
[16:19] >> There are tons of people out there who
[16:22] uh have these benefits available to him,
[16:24] but nobody will tell them.
[16:26] >> Dour found out the hard way he had
[16:28] access to free rehab. In December, he
[16:31] was arrested for riding his motorcycle
[16:33] under the influence of alcohol. It was
[16:36] his second DUI in less than 5 years.
[16:39] Part of his sentence, 90 days of
[16:42] treatment for alcohol abuse. Detour says
[16:44] the program that was recommended to him
[16:47] could have cost him more than $3,000.
[16:50] people are caught up in bad situations
[16:52] and you know if if they can't afford to
[16:55] be in compliance because they don't have
[16:57] the monetary ability then you know it's
[17:01] a downward spiral from there you can't
[17:03] get out of the hole.
[17:04] >> Jason says he will be getting out of
[17:06] that hole now because he is getting
[17:08] treatment for free. All he has to pay
[17:10] for is the random urine analysis
[17:12] monitoring to prove that he has stayed
[17:14] sober.
[17:15] >> And they find out, you know, there is
[17:16] help available and you can get it, but a
[17:18] lot of times they don't know that.
[17:19] >> Jason hopes a struggling vet hears his
[17:21] story and maybe gets help without having

[17:30] stress disorder

[17:34] of a sudden they start having issues

[17:48] Reporting live from Southwest Portland
[17:50] tonight, Stephanie Kovich, the 10:00
[17:52] news.
[17:53] >> Portland police say they weren't playing
[17:55] favorites when they investigated a
[17:56] recent traffic accident involving
[17:58] Portland Mayor Sam Adams. However, the
[18:00] police report does show at least one
[18:02] witness told officers that the mayor may
[18:04] have been impaired when that fender
[18:06] bender happened Sunday night in Jansen
[18:07] Beach. Officers investigated and tell
[18:09] Fox 12 there was no reason to do a field
[18:12] sobriety test.
[18:14] >> And the search made it very clear that
[18:16] this is the mayor that just shut down
[18:18] his precinct. And so, if there was even
[18:21] one iota of information that he could
[18:23] have done to legally jam the mayor up
[18:26] with a DUI charge, it would have
[18:28] happened. and that just isn't the case.
[18:31] >> Well, police refused to say who was at
[18:32] fault in the accident and have not
[18:34] issued any tickets.
[18:38] >> The government says it's now treating
[18:40] H1N1 like any other seasonal flu
[18:43] outbreak. The head of the Oregon public
[18:45] health department says schools don't
[18:46] need to close because of the virus. Even
[18:48] so, he says that people still need to be
[18:50] cautious to avoid getting sick. Dr. Mel
[18:52] Con says that he believes the government
[18:54] has handled the outbreak the right way.
[18:58] There are all kinds of lessons that we
[19:00] will learn from this and and we will be
[19:02] looking very carefully at what we did,
[19:04] how we will do it better next time.
[19:06] There will be a next time whether it's
[19:08] going to be H1N1 flu or some other
[19:11] health crisis. Uh that's just the
[19:13] reality of the world. There are 21
[19:16] confirmed cases so far in Oregon. Six
[19:18] are kids, five are teens, 10 are adults,
[19:21] and there are also 50 cases still being
[19:23] tested. Two deaths have been linked to
[19:26] H1N1 in the US.
[19:29] >> Right now, developing news from Southern

[19:48] >> And many smokers could be in store for
[19:50] some big fines. We're not talking about
[19:51] the cigarette tax. Why some smokers may
[19:53] have to shell out 90 bucks if they don't
[19:55] kick the habit.
[19:56] >> And it was a relatively chilly Mayday
[19:58] today. Take a look at our high
[19:59] temperatures around the Northwest. Just

[21:55] >> Yeah, but there are other reasons why I
[21:56] like it.
[21:56] >> No, I know. It's the box.

[23:21] Right now, we want to take you live to
[23:22] Southern California for a live view,
[23:24] aerial view of a big fire going on in
[23:26] the Santa Barbara area. Right now, we're
[23:28] told that about 2,000 homes are
[23:31] threatened by this fastmoving wildfire.
[23:33] The fire is about 400 acres wide and
[23:37] we're told it's now burning within a
[23:38] half mile of some homes. 1,200 people
[23:41] have been ordered to evacuate. Some high
[23:44] winds in this area are pushing these
[23:45] flames right now. We're hearing that
[23:46] there are gusts up to 50 mph. Some, as
[23:50] we said, mandatory evacuations are now
[23:52] in progress. We'll keep tabs on this
[23:54] fire that's burning in the hills above
[23:55] Santa Barbara, and we'll bring you more
[23:58] developments as warranted.
[24:02] We have some new details tonight about a
[24:04] law that would ban the sale of
[24:06] child-sized motorcycles and ATVs. The
[24:08] new regulations are being put on hold.
[24:10] The CPSC voted to put off enforcing a
[24:13] law about lead levels in off-road
[24:15] vehicles for kids. The law is designed
[24:17] to protect children from lead, but the
[24:19] government agency worried that the bill
[24:21] would just make riding even more
[24:23] dangerous for kids who might end up
[24:24] getting adult ATVs and motorcycles
[24:26] instead. The stay of enforcement goes
[24:29] through May of 2011.
[24:35] >> Well, as we head through the night
[24:36] tonight, look for those clouds to
[24:37] continue thickening up. We didn't get a
[24:39] whole lot of breaks in the cloudiness
[24:40] today, but there are signs in the 7-day
[24:42] forecast of a few nice days. Details
[24:44] about that after the break.
[24:45] >> Also ahead, it was supposed to be a
[24:46] fun-filled field trip to a big theme

[28:40] Live from Fox 12 Oregon, this is
[28:43] breaking news.
[28:44] >> We are following some breaking news out
[28:45] of Northeast Portland this evening.
[28:47] Police are now on the scene of a
[28:48] stabbing near Northeast 90th in Hasselo.
[28:51] At this time, dispatchers are not sure
[28:52] if anyone is seriously hurt or if a
[28:55] suspect is on the run. We do have a crew
[28:57] though on the way to the scene. We will
[28:59] bring you more information as soon as it
[29:01] becomes available right here on the
[29:02] 10:00 news.
[29:04] In news from around the Northwest
[29:06] tonight, a winery worker is dead after a
[29:08] freak accident. Deputies say the man got
[29:10] caught in the fan of an agricultural
[29:12] sprayer in Sunnyside. That's near
[29:14] Yakama. He suffered a partially
[29:16] amputated arm and other stomach injuries
[29:18] before he died. Investigators say the
[29:20] man was replacing the fan when he
[29:22] somehow got caught in it. We now know
[29:24] what caused today's three alarm fire at
[29:26] a technical school in Everett,
[29:27] Washington. Fire investigators say
[29:29] workers sparked the blaze as they were
[29:31] grinding steel for renovations. The
[29:34] fastmoving flames caused extensive
[29:36] damage to the Snow Isle Tech Skills
[29:38] Center. One firefighter was hurt in the
[29:40] leg when the fire trucks were being
[29:41] parked, but he is expected to be okay.
[29:44] >> Well, if you plan on doing some driving
[29:45] up in Washington, you better slow down.
[29:47] That's because the state is about to put
[29:49] up a lot more speed cameras in
[29:51] construction zones. In a report for
[29:53] KPTV, Drew Mickelson explains what the
[29:56] penalty is if you're caught speeding.
[30:02] 52 62.
[30:04] >> Sitting on the side of I5, Monty Jones
[30:07] is waiting.
[30:09] >> 56
[30:12] 70. He's waiting for speeders.
[30:16] >> And he usually doesn't have to wait very
[30:18] long.
[30:21] >> See, there was one right there. We just
[30:22] got one. Actually, we just got two.
[30:26] When a car speeds past Monty's SUV, a
[30:28] radar triggers his digital camera. This
[30:31] area south of Olympia is the second
[30:33] stretch of I5 to be put under camera
[30:35] enforcement. Lawmakers intend to place
[30:37] the cameras in work zones statewide.
[30:41] Every busted driver gets mailed a $137
[30:45] ticket.
[30:45] >> Wow. I guess people better watch out.
[30:50] >> The cameras have their critics.
[30:52] >> It's all revenue enhancement. It has
[30:53] nothing to do with traffic control. It's
[30:56] money.
[30:58] >> The state says there is no profit. The
[31:00] Department of Transportation says all
[31:01] proceeds go to enforcement. The payoff,
[31:04] the state says, comes from making
[31:05] construction zones safer. But in Phoenix
[31:08] last month, one of the cameras got a man
[31:10] killed. A passing motorist fired five
[31:13] shots into one of these SUVs. And as a
[31:15] result, the operators here in Washington
[31:17] are about to get more protection.
[31:19] >> We've had people come by and shoot
[31:21] paintballs at the vehicles, uh, throw
[31:23] rocks at the vehicles.
[31:26] These SUVs are getting video cameras to
[31:28] help operators watch out for problems.
[31:30] But Monty Jones ran the cameras in Lewis
[31:32] County last fall, and he's not worried.
[31:35] The majority of the people who come up
[31:36] and say anything to me at all, it's
[31:38] usually, "I'm glad you're there. I hope
[31:40] it slows him down."
[31:46] >> That was Drew Mickelson reporting.
[31:48] Tonight, similar cameras are already at
[31:50] work in Seattle monitoring school zone
[31:52] speeders. If Governor Gregoire signs the
[31:55] transportation budget, the cameras will
[31:57] be cleared to start up in work zones
[31:59] statewide. Four people are in trouble
[32:01] tonight after police say they stole some
[32:02] golf carts. Two of them are father and
[32:04] son. Police say a truck driver left
[32:06] three golf carts near the side of the
[32:08] road after he crashed yesterday on I5
[32:10] near Roseber. Later, police say they
[32:12] spotted a golf cart in the back of one
[32:14] of the suspect's trucks and uh pulled
[32:17] him over. You can see the picture here.
[32:18] Investigators say that helped them track
[32:20] down the other two carts. One they say
[32:22] from a father and son in Glide. Police
[32:24] ticketed all four people. Well, even
[32:26] dogs seem to be struggling in this
[32:28] economy. The Snomish City Council might
[32:29] decide to trim its budget by laying off
[32:32] the police drug sniffing dog Dixie. The
[32:35] 7-year-old Shepherd Collie mix costs
[32:37] about $16,000 a year in vet care, food,
[32:40] training, and grooming costs. However,
[32:42] police dog Kaisar should be safe. He is
[32:44] younger and can track suspects.
[32:49] I'm Kevin Kawari and here's what's
[32:50] coming up news tonight on the 11 o'clock
[32:52] news. Robbers attack a clerk from all
[32:54] sides going after him with a hammer and
[32:56] even dousing him with hot coffee. Caught
[32:58] on camera why he wasn't the one limping
[33:00] away from this fight. A family ends up
[33:03] in the hospital after their trusted dog
[33:05] goes on the attack. How many thousands
[33:07] of stitches one victim had to have and
[33:09] what they think they did to set the dog
[33:11] off. He lost a toe and gained a thumb.
[33:15] The new digit swapping surgery that one
[33:17] man says gave him his life back. You
[33:19] have to see it to believe it. That and
[33:21] much more coming up at the top of the
[33:23] hour on the 11:00 news.
[33:26] Well, City Hall is going green tonight
[33:28] with the addition of a new garden, and
[33:30] it's got a big name to go along with it,
[33:32] the Better Together Portland City Hall
[33:34] garden. At its opening ceremony today,
[33:36] Mayor Sam Adams and city commissioners
[33:38] were on hand for the event. One local
[33:40] nursery owner planted an apple and fig
[33:42] tree in the garden and loves that
[33:44] purpose of the garden.
[33:46] >> I think it's a real statement toward
[33:48] self-sufficiency, toward local food
[33:49] production, supporting our local
[33:51] farmers, and I think the city is doing a
[33:54] great job with this.
[33:55] >> The garden is intended to inspire people
[33:56] to grow their own gardens and donate a
[33:58] portion to local food banks.
[34:04] >> Roger Drew Jackson is here now with a
[34:05] check of the forecast. And we're just
[34:07] waiting this out, right? because sunny
[34:09] skies ahead somewhere out there.
[34:10] >> Yeah, if you could fast forward three
[34:12] days, then you're there. Yeah, exactly.
[34:14] A wet day again tomorrow, but then after
[34:16] that things really starting to improve.
[34:17] Weekend, it's going to time out right.
[34:18] The sunshine's going to be here on the
[34:20] two days that matter for most people.
[34:21] All right, outside live we go here this
[34:23] evening. We're looking live right now
[34:25] from our Fox Tower camera. The clouds
[34:26] are thickening up once again and the
[34:29] rain is not far away. Speaking of that
[34:30] rain, check out live radar here and you
[34:33] can see that there are showers that are
[34:35] increasing out over the coast range
[34:36] here. So from Highway 26 right here
[34:39] along Highway 6, raining and spotty
[34:41] showers along the coast right now. Over
[34:43] the last few hours, the tendency has
[34:45] been for these to increase as they move
[34:47] from southwest to northeast. And there
[34:49] are plenty more showers off the edge of
[34:51] the screen here. So tomorrow morning
[34:52] likely to be wet spread everywhere west
[34:54] of the Cascades. I want to switch to the
[34:55] other radar. This goes back to 5:00 in
[34:57] the morning. You can see out into
[34:59] portions of northeastern Oregon there
[35:00] were showers today as well, especially
[35:01] over the mountains. Most of our showers
[35:03] confined to the highest elevations west
[35:05] of the Cascades as well. But then as I
[35:07] was as I was talking about on the live
[35:08] radar, uh the number of showers growing
[35:11] here as of this hour. Right now we're in
[35:13] the low 50s west of the Cascades and
[35:15] it's going to be a fairly mild night
[35:17] with the increasing cloud cover.
[35:18] Temperatures are not going to fall off
[35:20] all that significantly. So it's not
[35:21] going to be that cold of a start
[35:23] tomorrow morning. East of the Cascades
[35:24] right now. You too really not all that
[35:26] chilly. 42 the coldest spot on the map
[35:28] there at Baker City. So overnight
[35:30] tonight 45 to 50 west of the Cascades
[35:32] with the increasing rain showers. East
[35:33] side mostly dry until early tomorrow
[35:36] morning. Temperatures in the 30s to 40s.
[35:38] There's that big storm that brought us
[35:39] the wind and rain yesterday. Today we
[35:41] got a break. Here's the next one. It's
[35:42] not nearly as strong as the one that
[35:44] came through yesterday. Nevertheless, we
[35:45] are going to get a batch of steady rain
[35:47] out of this. The storm track very active
[35:49] for this time of year and it's going to
[35:51] stay that way through tomorrow and
[35:53] probably through Thursday. After that,
[35:54] things start to change, however. But
[35:56] between now and then, got a little bit
[35:58] of rain to get through. The heaviest of
[35:59] which looks to be late tonight towards
[36:01] tomorrow morning. Here's 7:00. Look at
[36:03] all the green on the map here. And then
[36:04] as we go through the day tomorrow, the
[36:06] steady rain quickly switches to showers.
[36:08] So, it'll start and it'll stop. Could
[36:09] even be an afternoon thunderstorm in
[36:11] spots tomorrow. Thursday morning, still
[36:13] showery. But then by Thursday afternoon,
[36:15] it does look like we dry out. And that
[36:17] will be the beginning of a stretch of
[36:18] dry weather. Look at Saturday, sunny,
[36:20] pleasant, 70. Sunday, mostly sunny as
[36:23] well, 67. So, good looking weekend here
[36:25] coming up. For tomorrow, east of the
[36:26] Cascades, look for highs to be in the
[36:28] 50s to low 60s. It turns windy in the
[36:30] afternoon. There'll be some scattered
[36:32] showers up on Mount Hood. A fairly wet
[36:34] day, especially below 5,500 feet. Above
[36:36] that level, Timberland Lodge and higher,
[36:38] some wet snow continuing throughout the
[36:40] day. West of the Cascades along the
[36:42] coast, look for a breezy day. 20 to 35
[36:45] mile per hour winds. Highs in the
[36:46] mid-50s. Early rain switches to
[36:48] scattered showers. We'll be near 60 at
[36:50] Wamtt Valley locations tomorrow
[36:52] afternoon with the showers and maybe a
[36:54] thunderstorm. Western sections of the
[36:55] Portland area also near 60 tomorrow. A
[36:58] little bit blustery as well. Could see
[36:59] some sun breaks and some uh angry
[37:01] looking clouds at times in the afternoon
[37:03] with maybe a downpour here or there on
[37:05] the east side of town. Upper 50s to near
[37:07] 60. We start the day wet tomorrow at 50°
[37:10] 55 by noon with showers and sunbas
[37:12] thunderstorm at 5:00. 60 the afternoon
[37:15] high and an initial east or southeast
[37:17] wind switching to a southwest wind at 10
[37:19] to 20 throughout the day. More showers
[37:21] Thursday, but probably not as numerous
[37:23] as tomorrow. 62 on Thursday. Friday
[37:26] turning nice. 65. There's that weekend
[37:28] again. Upper 60s to near 70 with
[37:30] Saturday being the slightly warmer of
[37:32] the two days. We cool off again Monday
[37:34] with showers returning for Tuesday. You
[37:36] can catch Andy Carson tomorrow morning
[37:37] on Good Day Oregon for the latest
[37:38] forecast. And I'll have another update
[37:40] coming up tonight on the 11:00 news.
[37:44] In tonight's final cut, you'd never
[37:46] expect it. You'd probably never expect a
[37:48] dangerous dog to run into your yard and
[37:50] hurt your dog. And you'll never expect
[37:52] how a man was able to save his. You'd
[37:55] never expect a two-time killer to move
[37:57] in. right next door after not serving
[37:59] his time in prison. See why one
[38:00] neighborhood has reason to be scared
[38:02] tonight. And danger from above. They
[38:05] didn't expect it, but some lights can be
[38:07] a risk to your safety. See what to look
[38:09] for that could save your sight in the
[38:12] final cut.

[41:36] Stand by the final cut in 3 2 1. Cue
[41:40] them. So begins with news across America
[41:42] tonight and a deadly fight over money.
[41:44] Police say a family member shot and
[41:46] killed two Southern California attorneys
[41:48] yesterday. Officers arrested uh one of
[41:51] the victim's brothers in connection with
[41:52] the shooting. Neighbors tipped police
[41:54] off to that shooting after hearing
[41:56] gunshots outside a home. Several
[41:59] students are hurt. One Florida high
[42:00] school teacher is dead after returning
[42:02] from a field trip to Universal Studios.
[42:04] You can see the SUV is just destroyed.
[42:07] Florida Highway Patrol says a
[42:08] 17-year-old teenager was driving and
[42:10] fell asleep at the wheel early Sunday
[42:12] morning. They say no one was wearing
[42:15] their seatelt. The crash is still under
[42:16] investigation.
[42:17] >> The owner of a Missouri gas station is
[42:19] dead and police say a family member
[42:20] killed him. Police were called to an
[42:22] Odessa gas station yesterday. Officers
[42:25] say they found two people dead inside.
[42:27] They say the gas station's owner was
[42:29] shot and killed by a family member. The
[42:30] shooter was also found dead. That
[42:32] investigation is continuing. A woman and
[42:35] her nail polish being blamed for a
[42:36] deadly accident. A 56-year-old woman on
[42:38] a motorcycle was killed Saturday in a
[42:41] crash. Police say that the woman was
[42:42] stopped at a traffic light when a car
[42:45] hit her bike from behind and the car's
[42:47] driver told police she was painting her
[42:49] nails at the time and simply didn't see
[42:52] the stopped motorcycle. She was cited,
[42:54] but an investigation may bring up
[42:56] further charges. The victim's family
[42:58] says it's pressing for those charges. A
[43:00] state trooper in Indiana wastes no time
[43:02] saving a girl floating down a fastmoving
[43:04] stream.
[43:06] >> I took my shirt off, my gun belt, my
[43:09] hat, my shoes, and uh and then I jumped
[43:13] in and started swimming for her.
[43:15] >> Yeah. The trooper says the girl couldn't
[43:16] get out on her own, so he jumped right
[43:17] in and was able to pull her to shore.
[43:19] The trooper then started to perform CPR
[43:21] on the teen. An ambulance took her to
[43:23] the hospital with head and spinal cord
[43:25] injuries. Doctors say she should
[43:27] survive. Well, it was dog versus dog
[43:30] versus weed whacker in Florida. The man
[43:33] says a pitbull came through the fence
[43:34] into his yard and he said it looked like
[43:37] the two dogs were playing, but then he
[43:38] realized the pitbull had latched onto
[43:40] his dog and just wouldn't let go. You
[43:42] see his dog there? Well, first the man
[43:43] grabbed a broomstick, tried to get the
[43:45] pitbull off, but that did not work.
[43:48] >> I went and grabbed the wedi that was
[43:50] sitting out front. Luckily, I borrowed
[43:51] my friend's equipment to trim up all the
[43:53] bushes, you know, and I jabbed him right
[43:55] in the thigh and he let go.
[43:57] >> Wow. Well, the Pit Bull's owner says he
[43:59] understands what the other owner felt he
[44:01] had to do. Now, his dog is recovering,
[44:02] but the Pit Bull's injuries are so bad
[44:04] it might have to be put down.
[44:06] >> A big mistake by police has allowed a
[44:08] self-admitted killer to return home. A
[44:11] judge says police never read the Florida
[44:13] man his Miranda rights when they
[44:14] arrested him. So, now he's being allowed
[44:16] to leave prison. The man admitted to
[44:18] police that he killed two people and his
[44:20] neighbors now fear that he will kill
[44:22] somebody else. A GPS monitoring device
[44:25] is helping authorities track him for
[44:27] now. Neighbors say they will also be
[44:29] watching his every move. Now, judge may
[44:31] decide at a later time to require the
[44:33] man to head back to prison.
[44:39] Well, they are over you all over the
[44:41] place. Strong bulbs called halli lights
[44:44] that brighten up big box stores, some
[44:46] schools, and more. But with some bulbs,
[44:48] there's a hidden danger. And tonight,
[44:50] the Fox 12 investigators show you just
[44:52] what these bulbs did to a local woman
[44:54] and what it means for you and your
[44:56] family. KPTV's Carrie Thomasson is here
[44:58] live to explain. Carrie, well, this
[45:00] woman cannot go outside without an
[45:02] umbrella, sunglasses, and a visor. And
[45:04] she says that is because of these
[45:06] dangerous lights. She is now telling her
[45:09] story to bring change here in Oregon and
[45:11] around the world.
[45:13] >> And then incredible light sensitivity.
[45:16] >> Kelly Laflet remembers how it used to
[45:18] be. Well, don't you have your pictures
[45:20] of your hike up on St. Helens?
[45:22] >> When she could go outside without dark
[45:25] glasses.
[45:26] >> Um, light is very, very um painful.
[45:29] >> She and her husband Joel now spend time
[45:32] inside away from the sun. Even that
[45:35] hurts.
[45:36] >> It's hard to believe how much our life
[45:38] has changed because of one light bulb.
[45:40] >> This is the bulb. A halli bulb that puts
[45:43] out strong ultraviolet rays. With a
[45:46] cover, it gives light for big places
[45:48] like gyms, stores, football fields, and
[45:51] more. Without a cover, it can burn human
[45:54] skin and eyes.
[45:56] >> There's there's always a constant pain
[45:57] that never goes away 24 hours a day.
[45:59] Even I mean, literally 24 hours a day.
[46:02] >> Kelly was a teacher in Lake Asiggo. She
[46:05] and other teachers met for an
[46:06] educational session in the gym back in
[46:09] 2004. After 5 hours, some were in so
[46:13] much pain they had to leave. ending up
[46:16] in the emergency room. The school found
[46:18] a halli bulb with a cover broken by a
[46:21] volleyball. Now, almost 5 years later,
[46:24] Kelly says she still suffers in the
[46:27] light. A horrific um stabs of pain. Um
[46:31] walking through a parking lot on a sunny
[46:33] day, the reflections off of cars, but a
[46:35] TV in a black room is almost like, you
[46:37] know, daggers into my eyes, and the pain
[46:41] is so great it's nauseating. Joel made a
[46:44] website to tell people about the
[46:45] dangers. The two lobbyed for a new law
[46:48] forcing Oregon schools to put in a new
[46:51] kind of halli light that puts itself out
[46:54] if the protective cover breaks. But they
[46:56] say now their work is not done.
[46:59] >> We have been denied our day in court.
[47:01] >> The Lafalletes wanted to sue the company
[47:03] that made the lights. But Oregon's law
[47:06] says they can't sue if the product is
[47:08] more than 8 years old. The Lafalletes
[47:11] believe if they don't sue the companies
[47:14] will be able to keep producing the
[47:16] dangerous lights and accidents will keep
[47:18] happening and they are.
[47:21] >> And then I woke up with severe eye pain
[47:23] like really like very very like somebody
[47:26] put a needle into your eye.
[47:27] >> In Florida more than a dozen people
[47:29] recently reported serious eye burns from
[47:32] a broken heli bulb.
[47:34] >> Looking through my eyes to me it seemed
[47:36] like a haze but I guess it was because
[47:38] my cornea was burned. In India, reports
[47:40] say the lights burned 100 people at an
[47:43] inauguration.
[47:44] >> Why is the manufacturer still making the
[47:46] bulb? Why are they still making and why
[47:48] are they still being purchased by um the
[47:52] masses?
[47:52] >> The FDA says the lights are a public
[47:55] health concern, but has not banned them.
[47:58] The company that makes the bulb at
[47:59] Burned Kelly says it doesn't recommend
[48:02] using lights in places like gyms where
[48:04] they can be damaged. An industry group,
[48:07] the National Electric Manufacturers
[48:09] Association, says gym lights should have
[48:12] strong covers. So, the bulbs continue to
[48:15] burn bright and bring the potential for
[48:18] risk. Joel keeps working, surrounded by
[48:21] light. The windows in their home
[48:23] bringing more pain for Kelly. He
[48:25] believes they can change the laws,
[48:28] making the regular halli bulbs too hot
[48:30] for light companies, forcing them to
[48:33] sell only the ones that put themselves
[48:35] out for the sake of you and your eyes.
[48:38] >> Let me tell you, you would never
[48:41] you would never wish this ever on
[48:44] anyone.
[48:46] Now, there are warnings on the bulb
[48:48] boxes, but still there are schools
[48:50] around the country that do not know
[48:53] about the dangers of those bulbs and may
[48:54] be putting kids and families at risk.
[48:57] Now, we have more information for you, a
[48:58] link to the FDA information about those
[49:01] bulbs on our website. Reporting live,

[51:56] take nitrates for chest pain, as it may
[51:58] cause an unsafe drop in blood pressure.
[52:00] Side effects may include headache,
[52:02] flushing, upset stomach, and abnormal
[52:04] vision. To avoid long-term injury, seek
[52:06] immediate medical help for an erection
[52:07] lasting more than 4 hours. Stop taking
[52:10] Viagra and call your doctor right away
[52:11] if you experience a sudden decrease in
[52:13] vision or hearing.
[52:16] Now's the time to get moving and ask
[52:18] your doctor if Viagra is right for you.

[52:33] In tonight's Consumer Watch, the Oregon
[52:35] College Savings Network has taken a hit,
[52:37] losing millions of dollars. The
[52:38] Oregonian says state officials were slow
[52:40] to secure those investments in the
[52:42] Oregon College Savings Plan. that
[52:44] supposedly cost them big time with the
[52:46] plan going from $1 billion to 744
[52:49] million. About 70,000 investors are
[52:52] saving for college for about 100,000
[52:54] students. The paper says the state is
[52:57] suing Oenheimer funds for at least $36
[52:59] million, saying that they were too risky
[53:02] with that money.
[53:04] >> Ever wonder why some smokers just toss
[53:05] their cigarette butts on the ground?
[53:07] Well, some state lawmakers want them to
[53:09] stop it. The Oregon House passed a bill
[53:11] today that would fine people who drop
[53:13] cigarette butts on the ground. The
[53:15] proposed penalty would be $90.
[53:17] Supporters say it's an environmental
[53:18] issue. The bill would require smokers to
[53:20] put their butts in a fireproof
[53:22] container. Now, the bill is not
[53:24] supported by everyone. Some legislators
[53:26] say anti-litter laws already cover the
[53:28] matter. It's not a law just yet. We will
[53:31] keep you posted. And we want you to take
[53:32] our web poll on this topic tonight. Do
[53:34] you agree with this proposed $90 fine
[53:36] for smokers who drop their cigarette
[53:38] butts on the ground? Vote online at

[53:45] An American Idol stage manager had to be
[53:47] rushed to the hospital today after an
[53:49] accident on stage during rehearsals.
[53:51] You're looking at pictures of what
[53:52] happened. TMZ is reporting that Debbie
[53:54] Williams was walking down the stairs
[53:56] behind Ryan Serest as he was coming down
[53:59] the staircase on the stage. It's
[54:01] supposed to retract, but it apparently
[54:03] went too soon and Williams fell down the
[54:06] stairs. Witnesses say she had a big gash
[54:08] on her leg.
[54:09] >> Paula Abdul is opening up now about her
[54:11] past drug use, her fellow idol judges,
[54:13] and even how she tried to quit the show.
[54:15] Abdul says she was addicted to heavy
[54:17] pain medication for years. That's in an
[54:20] article for Lady's Home Journal. She's
[54:22] long suffered from chronic pain, but
[54:24] says recent surgery has now fixed it. As
[54:26] for Idol, she described Simon Cal as the
[54:28] brother she never wanted. She also says
[54:31] that she tried to quit the show after
[54:32] the first day, but was talked into
[54:34] staying. The newest American Idol judge
[54:37] isn't going anywhere. Cara Diaguardi
[54:39] will be back for a second season in the
[54:41] judges chair. Simon Cal made the
[54:43] announcement to Ellen DeGeneres during a
[54:45] taping of the Ellen talk show today.
[54:48] Duardi recently said that she only
[54:50] signed on to do Idol for one year, and
[54:53] this is the first year those judges have
[54:54] used four judges.
[54:56] >> Being the front runner on American Idol
[54:58] does not mean you'll take home the top
[54:59] prize. Matt Jerome went home last week,
[55:01] which came as no big surprise. But it
[55:03] was the two people who were next in line
[55:05] that surprised everyone. Chris Allen and
[55:07] Adam Lambert were in the bottom three
[55:10] along with Matt. Now, people who analyze
[55:12] what happens on Idol say front runners
[55:13] on Idol do tend to fall back to the
[55:16] pack. They say uh contestants that start
[55:18] strong have less room to grow, which
[55:20] means just anyone can be eliminated.

[59:34] >> Live from Fox 12 Oregon. This is
[59:37] breaking news.
[59:38] >> And tonight we begin with breaking news
[59:40] out of Northeast Portland. We have
[59:41] reports of a stabbing on Northeast 90th
[59:44] and Hasselo. A lot of police activity on
[59:46] the scene right now. KPTV Stephanie
[59:48] Crawage is live there with the very
[59:50] latest. Steph,
[59:51] >> that's right. Police are still on the
[59:53] scene and you can see we are very close
[59:54] to I 84. That's where 90th and Hassel is
[59:57] just off 84. We're told a stabbing
[60:00] happened here at this apartment complex
[60:02] just after 10:00. We're told the suspect
[60:04] is still on the loose tonight and the
[60:07] victim is being treated at the hospital
[60:09] for a stab wound to his back and we are
[60:12] told he is expected to survive at this
[60:14] point. Now, police got the call at
[60:16] around 10:00 tonight from someone at
[60:19] 43rd and Hally. Apparently, the victim
[60:22] had called a friend to come pick him up
[60:23] to take him to get help. And right
[60:25] around when they got to the area of 43rd
[60:28] and Hollyy, they decided it would be a
[60:30] good idea to call police. So that is
[60:31] what brought police to the scene here at
[60:33] 90th and Hassel, they say this is where
[60:36] the stabbing happened. And now they are
[60:38] waiting to get more information from the
[60:40] victim who is still being treated for
[60:42] that stab wound at the hospital.
[60:44] Reporting live from Northeast Portland
[60:45] tonight, Stephanie Kovich, the 11
[60:47] o'clock news.
[60:48] >> All right, Steph, thank you. And much
[60:50] more on this breaking news first thing
[60:51] in the morning on Good Day Oregon. We're
[60:53] also updating the story online at
[60:55] kptv.com.
[60:57] And now, here's a look at your first
[60:58] live local headlines at 11:00. KPTV's
[61:00] Chad Carter has the very latest on some
[61:02] suspected scammers roaming our area
[61:05] trying to trick you out of cash. Salem
[61:08] police are investigating a surprising
[61:10] case of abuse tonight after they say
[61:12] they arrested a man accused of putting a
[61:14] dog shock collar on all four of his
[61:17] kids. Police say they arrested Todd
[61:19] Markham after their investigation shows
[61:21] he put that shot collar on his kids for
[61:23] entertainment and enjoyment. Police
[61:25] arrested Markhamm today and say he
[61:27] admitted to using the collar on his kids
[61:29] because he thought it was funny. Police
[61:31] also say he chased his three-year-old
[61:33] around with the collar, making him cry
[61:35] at just the sight of it. Now tonight,
[61:37] Markhamm is in the Marian County Jail
[61:39] facing four counts of criminal
[61:40] mistreatment while the kids are now with
[61:42] the mother and the case is being passed
[61:44] off to the Department of Human Services
[61:47] in Salem. Chad Carter, the 11:00 news. A
[61:50] local church has a warning tonight after
[61:52] police say Fox 12's most wanted has been
[61:54] trying to sell fake raffle tickets in
[61:56] the church's name. The callers report
[61:58] they've been approached by people at a
[61:59] Fred Meyer parking lot and at a nearby
[62:01] park trying to sell them raffle tickets
[62:03] to supposedly raise money for the
[62:04] church. But Pastor Fischer says there is
[62:06] no fundraiser and he says the people are
[62:09] imposters. They've been reported to
[62:10] police but so far have not been busted.
[62:13] Now Pastor Fischer is telling people if
[62:15] they are approached by these people
[62:16] trying to sell them tickets to not buy
[62:18] them. Instead he says call authorities
[62:20] in Long View. Mark Hammeran the 11:00
[62:22] news. Also do at 11. Neighbors in an
[62:25] Albany community are frustrated with Fox
[62:27] 12's Most Wanted tonight after a rash of
[62:29] car breakins. Robert Duran lives in a
[62:31] newer subdivision off Knox but Road. He
[62:34] says thieves target cars in his
[62:35] neighborhood and then try to transform
[62:37] them so cops can't recognize them.
[62:39] Durant says he is sick of this happening
[62:42] in his neighborhood.
[62:44] >> Everybody at my work's like, "You live
[62:45] in a nice neighborhood." I said, "Well,
[62:47] would you want to go steal in the ghetto
[62:48] or do you want to steal somebody's got
[62:49] some nice stuff?" You know, you go to
[62:51] the ghetto, they're going to steal
[62:52] something that's going to be out of gas.
[62:53] They ain't going to want to steal
[62:53] something that's ain't going to be able
[62:55] to get nowhere.
[62:56] >> Well, police say they found the car in
[62:58] Salem and someone had already painted
[63:00] the hood of the car black. Police found
[63:02] tools, plus a stereo, a digital camera,
[63:04] and a DVD player inside the car. Durant
[63:07] says that was stolen from his neighbor's
[63:08] car just a few nights before. Now, many
[63:11] are complaining that the Albany Police
[63:13] Department doesn't respond enough to
[63:14] these kinds of crimes. So, tonight, the
[63:16] chief of Albany Police is responding. He
[63:18] says they can't send an officer to
[63:20] respond to every property crime, and
[63:22] it's an unfortunate sign of scarce
[63:25] resources and an increasing demand for
[63:27] service.
[63:32] Tonight, authorities are looking for a
[63:33] missing three-year-old who was kidnapped
[63:35] during a robbery. Two robbers took
[63:38] little Bryant Rodriguez from his San
[63:39] Bernardino, California home. They also
[63:42] tied up his four siblings and his
[63:44] mother. The kidnappers ransacked the
[63:46] house and stole money before taking off.
[63:48] Police along the Mexican border have
[63:50] been put on high alert. So far, there
[63:52] haven't been any ransom demands and no
[63:54] contact with the family by the
[63:55] abductors. Police don't know why that
[63:58] child was taken.
[64:02] And in fire season 2009 tonight, crews
[64:04] are getting a hold on a wildfire in the
[64:06] foothills of Santa Barbara. The fire was
[64:08] first reported at around noon on a hill
[64:10] above the city. It was burning near
[64:12] power lines, but fire crews say it's not
[64:14] too dangerous because it's a slowmoving
[64:17] blaze. At this point, no homes have been
[64:19] threatened and no one has been forced to
[64:21] evacuate. Helicopters are helping
[64:23] firefighters battle those flames.
[64:27] In news across the Northwest tonight,
[64:28] firefighters in Western Washington
[64:30] battled a huge fire at a technical
[64:32] school tonight. It happened at the Snow
[64:34] Isle Tech Skills Center in Everett.
[64:36] Thick clouds of smoke billow into the
[64:38] air as crews douse those flames.
[64:40] Firefighters say workers started the
[64:42] blaze by grinding steel during a
[64:45] renovation. One firefighter was hurt
[64:47] when fire trucks were being parked.
[64:50] While the Boeing 787 moves closer to
[64:52] liftoff, crews roll the passenger jet
[64:55] onto the flight line at Payfield in
[64:57] Everett. It will undergo fuel tests
[64:59] next. Boeing officials expect the plane
[65:01] to make its first official flight later
[65:03] this year. The company already has
[65:05] orders for 886
[65:07] planes.
[65:10] A strong spring storm slams into
[65:13] Seattle, leaving thousands in the dark.
[65:15] The storm hit the area overnight with
[65:17] wind gusts hitting 50 mph. At least
[65:19] 25,000 homes were left powerless by the
[65:22] time the sun came up. In the Greenwood
[65:24] section of Seattle, a tree fell,
[65:25] snapping a phone line and crashing down
[65:28] onto an SUV. Another tree about 5 ft
[65:31] wide is on the verge of crashing into a
[65:33] home.
[65:35] >> I think it's going to be fine now. We
[65:37] have another tree that seems to have
[65:38] stopped this one from coming down. So,
[65:40] >> wow. Well, police have sealed off the
[65:42] area around that tree and are watching
[65:43] it just in case it begins to fall before
[65:45] they're able to secure it.
[65:47] >> Now, Portland's first complete forecast
[65:50] at 11 from your first live local weather
[65:53] team.
[65:54] >> And that storm that caused all the
[65:55] problems is moving away. We got a little
[65:57] bit of a break today, but now a new
[65:59] storm headed our direction and that
[66:00] means more rain is coming starting
[66:03] tonight. But it does look like we've got
[66:04] a really nice weekend here coming up.
[66:06] Let's look live outside here this
[66:07] evening. This is what it looks like from
[66:09] our river camera down there near OMSY. A
[66:11] pretty decent night so far. Really not
[66:13] all that wet yet, but there are showers
[66:15] approaching. In fact, we can see some of
[66:16] those on live radar right now out along
[66:18] the coast range. Yeah, you can see some
[66:20] of the yellow embedded on the map here
[66:21] out towards the coast and just a little
[66:24] bit inland into the coast range. A lot
[66:26] of these have not spilled their way into
[66:28] the western valleys as of yet, but
[66:30] there's more rain off to the edge of the
[66:32] picture here. In fact, let's take a look
[66:33] at the wider view of the radar here.
[66:35] This goes across all of Oregon and into
[66:38] southeast Washington starting at 5 this
[66:40] morning. And you can see that there were
[66:41] plenty of showers banked up into the
[66:43] Cascades throughout the afternoon and
[66:45] early evening hours. Now we're starting
[66:46] to see that increase out to the west.
[66:48] And that's why later tonight into
[66:50] tomorrow morning does look to be fairly
[66:51] wet. It's 50 at Kelso right now, 52 at
[66:54] Portland. Salem at 51. Also in the 50s
[66:56] along the coast, east of the Cascades,
[66:58] most spots in the 40s right now. And
[67:00] with the increasing cloud cover, it's
[67:01] not going to be all that cold overnight
[67:03] tonight. 45 to 50° the overnight lows as
[67:06] that rain increases on the west side.
[67:08] Mostly dry east side. Some spots getting
[67:10] into the 30s the the 30s I should say,
[67:13] but Lrand and the Dow staying in the 40s
[67:15] overnight tonight. All right, there's
[67:16] the last of that big storm as it pulled
[67:18] away. Now we've got these clouds out to
[67:20] our west and those are the clouds headed
[67:22] in our direction to renew the rain. In
[67:24] fact, we can time that out on the cloud
[67:25] and rain forecast. Notice tomorrow
[67:27] morning 8:00, pretty big slug of green
[67:30] in here indicating the light to moderate
[67:32] steady rain. But shortly after the
[67:34] morning commute, the steady rain will
[67:36] break apart into scattered showers and
[67:38] some of those showers could be a little
[67:39] bit intense tomorrow afternoon in
[67:40] between the sunbreaks. The clouds could
[67:42] really billow up and the sky could turn
[67:44] a little angry in spots and thunder and
[67:46] lightning not out of the question in a
[67:47] spot or two. Thursday morning, we still
[67:49] have showers around. Snow level
[67:50] Thursday, actually down to about 3,500
[67:52] ft and there could be a pop-up
[67:54] thunderstorm on Thursday as well. But
[67:55] then here's the weekend. Sunny and
[67:57] pleasant Saturday, 70°, mostly sunny on
[68:00] Sunday, still in the upper 60s. So, two
[68:02] decent days here coming up. Friday won't
[68:04] be bad either. All right, rain to
[68:06] showers quickly tomorrow morning along
[68:07] the coast. Maybe an afternoon
[68:09] thunderstorm. High temperatures reaching
[68:10] into the mid-50s. The wind will be 20 to
[68:12] 35 miles hour. So, a little blustery,
[68:14] but not damaging. Inland, we'll see
[68:16] highs close to 60. Early rain, very
[68:19] early rain. Switching to scattered
[68:20] showers and sunbreaks. Again, maybe an
[68:22] afternoon thunderstorm up on Mount Hood.
[68:24] Rain and snow up high the majority of
[68:26] the day. Timberline, wet snow at 35, but
[68:28] below Timberline should be mostly rain
[68:30] throughout the day. Just wet passes east
[68:32] of the Cascades. 50s many spots showers,
[68:35] maybe a thunderstorm in the afternoon
[68:37] hours. 50 and wet early tomorrow morning
[68:39] in Portland. By noon, we switch to
[68:41] scattered showers and sunbreaks. Maybe
[68:43] an afternoon thunderstorm. 60 the
[68:45] afternoon high. A little breezy as well.
[68:46] 10 to 20 m.
