[0:09] I think that maybe we've become
[0:10] complacent about space flight,
[0:13] but the risks are there.
[0:14] Anytime you put three people on top of 6
[0:16] million pounds of high explosive and
[0:18] send them
[0:19] 25,000 miles an hour into space 240,000
[0:22] miles away to land on somebody that
[0:24] hasn't got an atmosphere and 1/6 G and a
[0:27] pressure suit that's uh
[0:29] that is that then and
[0:31] you're taking risks.
[0:32] I think it's a uh
[0:34] it's a tribute to our American
[0:36] engineering that
[0:37] uh we can do this and uh we can do this
[0:40] with what appears to be apparent ease.
[0:44] But it this this complacency that people
[0:46] have because we do it so easily, I think
[0:49] sort of masks the tremendous amount of
[0:51] efforts that are done to make sure that
[0:53] we accomplish what we want to want to do
[0:55] safely.
[0:57] Tonight that complacency of which Jim
[1:00] Lovell spoke before Apollo 13 has
[1:03] vanished, replaced by worldwide anxiety
[1:06] for the safety of Lovell and his crew
[1:08] members. All depends now on the
[1:11] tremendous efforts of which Lovell also
[1:13] spoke. Their efforts by the courageous
[1:16] air crewman, space crewman themselves,
[1:19] and the space program's best engineering
[1:21] minds here on the ground to achieve what
[1:24] is now the prime, the only goal of
[1:26] Apollo 13, to get the men home safe.
[1:30] Tonight those efforts appear to be
[1:32] succeeding. And if uh
[1:35] it all goes well,
[1:36] uh they'll get back safely. There's not
[1:39] much margin though for any further
[1:41] problems. Apollo has swung around the
[1:43] moon, has begun the trip home. If
[1:46] nothing more were done, it would splash
[1:48] down almost exactly 3 days from right
[1:51] now on Friday night in the Indi
