[0:24] reporting tonight with [music] a special
[0:26] war update edition. Good evening. Allied
[0:29] war plananes kept up their
[0:30] roundthe-clock punishment of Iraq and
[0:32] occupied Kuwait today. American fighter
[0:34] planes for the first time shot down
[0:36] Iraqi aircraft trying to flee to Iran.
[0:40] Saddam Hussein's forces continue probing
[0:42] along the Saudi Arabian Kuwait border.
[0:45] King Hussein of Jordan called for a
[0:47] ceasefire. He accused the United States
[0:49] of trying to destroy Iraq's economy and
[0:52] culture. in Washington. In a statement
[0:54] that surprised some, Secretary of State
[0:56] Baker said after the war, the US and its
[0:59] allies would help Iraq rebuild. Today's
[1:02] Allied military briefings listed another
[1:04] string of losses for Iraq, including
[1:06] some of its top fighter aircraft. Eric
[1:08] Gingberg reports.
[1:12] For the first time in the war, American
[1:14] fighter planes this morning foiled an
[1:16] attempt by Iraqi planes to escape to
[1:19] Iran. F-15 fighters shot down two of the
[1:22] Iraqis and pilots claimed two others,
[1:25] Mig21s, were probably down. Allied
[1:29] claims that Iraq's air defenses have
[1:31] been totally shattered, ran into a
[1:33] barrage of missiles fired at British
[1:35] bombers.
