[0:03] Tonight, the president's strongest words
[0:05] yet about the crackdown in Iran. He is
[0:09] >> appalled
[0:10] and outraged by the threats and the
[0:12] beatings and imprisonments.
[0:14] >> But he continues to insist this is not
[0:17] about the US, but the people of Iran.
[0:20] I'm Katie Couric. Also tonight, the
[0:22] shocking words of an earlier president,
[0:25] Richard Nixon, on abortion.
[0:35] They bet on the market and lost. So,
[0:37] where do they invest what's left of
[0:39] their nest egg? Our special series, Life
[0:42] After Debt.
[0:44] And remembering Ed McMahon, the man
[0:47] behind the most famous introduction in

[0:56] >> [music]
[0:58] >> This is the CBS Evening News with Katie
[1:01] Couric.
[1:03] >> [music]
[1:04] >> Good evening, everyone. President
[1:06] Obama's been choosing his words about
[1:08] Iran very carefully, and today he chose
[1:11] two more, appalled and outraged. His
[1:14] strongest words yet to describe his
[1:16] reaction to the crackdown on protesters
[1:18] there. And he delivered them at the
[1:20] White House news conference. Our Chip
[1:22] Reid was there. Chip, the president's
[1:23] been under some pressure to ratchet up
[1:26] his language.
[1:27] >> Yes, he has, Katie. Republicans have
[1:29] accused him of being too timid in his
[1:31] response to Iran. Today, he changed his
[1:34] tone.
[1:36] >> The United States and the international
[1:37] community have been appalled
[1:39] and outraged by the threats and the
[1:41] beatings and imprisonments of the last
[1:44] few days.
[1:45] >> The president also took a direct swipe
[1:47] at Iran's repressive government.
[1:49] >> In 2009, no iron fist is strong enough
[1:53] to shut off the world from bearing
[1:55] witness to peaceful protests of justice.
