[0:00] World News, Saturday

[0:02] From Washington, here's Tom Jarrell.

[0:05] Good evening. The surviving Siamese twin

[0:07] in Philadelphia tonight continues to

[0:08] cling to life and is showing signs of

[0:10] improvement. The 7-week-old baby girl is

[0:12] said to be resting comfortably and her

[0:14] parents are thankful for the outcome of

[0:16] the complicated surgery. More now from

[0:19] ABC's Beth Nissen.

[0:21] >> The news was good. Little Angela

[0:24] Lakeberg had survived the night, was

[0:26] surviving the odds.

[0:27] >> Angela's in critical condition, but she

[0:29] is stable. She's moving. She's having

[0:32] urine output. She has a stable cardiac

[0:35] rhythm.

[0:36] >> Her parents were at Angela's cribside

[0:38] this morning.

[0:39] >> The doctor gave us this little chance,

[0:41] this less than 1% chance, and here we

[0:43] are with this little baby,

[0:45] you know, with her eyes open.

[0:50] >> But for the first time in her short

[0:51] life, Angela will not see the face of

[0:53] her twin sister Amy a few inches from

[0:55] her own. The two baby girls were born 7

[0:58] weeks ago joined at the midsection and

[1:00] chest. They shared a liver and only one

[1:03] malformed heart.

[1:05] In a 5 and 1/2 hour operation yesterday,

[1:07] surgeons at Children's Hospital of

[1:09] Pennsylvania separated Angela and Amy

[1:11] and repaired the heart for Angela. As

[1:14] doctors had known, there was not enough

[1:16] heart tissue left for Amy. She died on

[1:18] the operating table.

[1:21] The doctors who operated on the twins

[1:23] were not available for comment today,

[1:25] but surgeons who have done similar

[1:27] operations called yesterday's procedure

[1:29] extraordinary. Dr. W. Hardy Hendren has

[1:32] operated on nine sets of conjoined

[1:34] twins.
