[0:00] From

[0:05] ABC, this is World News Tonight with

[0:08] Peter Jennings.

[0:08] >> Good evening. The political focus of the

[0:10] Persian Gulf War has shifted tonight to

[0:12] Moscow. The Iraqi foreign minister,

[0:14] Terakaziz, flew to the Soviet capital

[0:16] this afternoon to meet with Mikall

[0:17] Gorbachoff and give him Saddam Hussein's

[0:20] answer about withdrawing unconditionally

[0:22] from Kuwait. Already today, Saddam

[0:25] Hussein has been on the radio with a

[0:27] very mixed message about his intentions.

[0:29] We have no other way of continuing. He

[0:31] told the Iraqi people, which sounded

[0:33] like he was about to cave in. But he

[0:35] also said the mother of battles will be

[0:43] House said that the Iraqi leader speech

[0:48] president and all his aids are as

[0:50] anxious as the rest of us to know what

[0:52] is going on in the Kremlin, which is

[0:54] where we begin in Moscow. ABC's Jim Ly.

[0:58] Aboard a special Soviet plane, the Iraqi

[1:01] foreign minister arrived back here on a

[1:03] mission the Soviets have said is the

[1:05] last chance to avoid a ground war. Terra

[1:09] Kaziz said nothing before being driven

[1:11] away at midnight in Moscow to the

[1:14] Kremlin where President Gorbachov was

[1:16] waiting. Before the two men met, Soviet

[1:19] officials said they hoped for a clearcut

[1:22] response. If there are any ifs, ands,

[1:25] and buts, said one official, then it

[1:27] means a certain land war.

[1:31] Gorbachoff and Terraiz have met now for

[1:34] more than 2 hours. No details of
