[0:04] This is the CBS Evening News

[0:08] with Dan Rather and Connie Chung.

[0:12] >> Good evening. US military forces are on

[0:14] the move again tonight to head off a

[0:17] possible new threat from Saddam Hussein.

[0:19] >> It's all quiet tonight on the border of

[0:21] Iraq and Kuwait, but tens of thousands

[0:23] of Iraqi troops are massing not far

[0:25] away. The reasons are not clear, but the

[0:28] danger is. So, President Clinton has

[0:30] fired off a warning and ordered a

[0:32] military buildup in the Gulf region.

[0:34] National Security Correspondent David

[0:36] Martin has the latest from the Pentagon.

[0:40] >> Saddam Hussein has moved a Republican

[0:42] Guard division to within 20 m of the

[0:44] Kuwaiti border, the most threatening

[0:46] Iraqi troop movement since the end of

[0:48] the Persian Gulf War. The movements are

[0:51] not routine and they're not typical of

[0:53] what we have seen in the past and

[0:55] therefore they do cause us concern.

[0:57] >> A German journalist just back from

[0:58] southern Iraq saw some of the troops

[1:00] moving toward Kuwait.

[1:02] >> The troops that I have seen, well, the

[1:04] convoys were about 30 kilometers long.

[1:06] >> There are now 40 to 50,000 Iraqi troops

[1:09] just north of Kuwait, well short of the

[1:11] 120,000 Saddam masked along the border

[1:14] just before he invaded Kuwait in 1990.

[1:16] >> We are watching it very closely. We are

[1:19] taking the necessary steps

[1:22] uh as a precaution to deal with this

[1:25] issue.

[1:26] >> The US has considerably more force in

[1:28] the area now than it did back in 1990.

[1:31] 2,000 Marines and two Navy warships

[1:33] armed with cruise missiles are already

[1:35] in the Persian Gulf. The Air Force has a

[1:37] total of 70 combat
