[0:03] I'm Roger Mud, NBC News, Washington.

[0:07] The United States today accused the

[0:08] Soviet Union of shooting down a Korean

[0:10] airline jumbo jet carrying 269,

[0:13] including Congressman Larry McDonald of

[0:15] Georgia and perhaps 30 other Americans.

[0:18] There are not thought to be any

[0:19] survivors. The airliner, which

[0:21] originated in New York, was on a flight

[0:23] from Anchorage, Alaska, to Soul, South

[0:25] Korea. The US claimed that Soviet

[0:27] fighters tracked the Korean 747 for more

[0:30] than two hours as it swerved off course

[0:32] and wandered in and out of Soviet

[0:34] airspace over Sucaline Island north of

[0:36] Japan yesterday afternoon Eastern time.

[0:38] Today, Secretary of State George

[0:40] Schultz, his fury barely under control,

[1:11] The Soviets tracked the commercial

[1:13] airliner for some 2 and 1/2 hours.

[1:18] A Soviet pilot reported visual contact

[1:22] with the aircraft at 1812 hours.

[1:27] The Soviet plane was, we know, in

[1:29] constant contact with its ground

[1:31] control.

[1:34] At 1826 hours, the Soviet pilot reported

[1:38] that he fired a missile and the target

[1:41] was destroyed.

[1:44] At 18:30 hours, the Korean aircraft was

[1:46] reported by radar at 5,000 m. At 1838

[1:52] hours, the Korean plane disappeared from

[1:55] the radar screens.

[1:58] We know that at least eight Soviet
