[0:03] Sheriff's deputies beat suspected
[0:06] illegal immigrants from Mexico. Criminal
[0:08] investigations are now underway. Also
[0:11] tonight, the new male contraceptive, Dr.

[0:22] what's called the common law movement,
[0:24] vigilante justice run by hate groups
[0:27] that hold US law in contempt.

[0:36] With Dan Rather reporting tonight from
[0:38] Washington.
[0:40] Good evening. It's a case reminiscent of
[0:42] the Rodney King beating. Law enforcement
[0:44] officers in California chased down a
[0:46] couple of suspects, pulled them out of a
[0:47] car, and beat them. The suspects this
[0:50] time are Mexicans, the officers
[0:52] Riverside County Sheriff's deputies. And
[0:55] once again, correspondent Sandra Hughes
[0:56] reports cameras were rolling.
[1:01] TV news cameras captured the beating
[1:03] from all angles. A Riverside County
[1:05] Sheriff's deputy clubbing a suspected
[1:07] illegal immigrant, then turning his
[1:09] force on a female suspect.
[1:12] From another helicopter camera, the tape
[1:14] reveals a series of blows by the same
[1:17] officer as the suspect lies face down on
[1:19] the ground, apparently offering no
[1:22] resistance.
[1:23] A second officer slams the woman's head
[1:25] into the hood of the truck. Even the
[1:28] Sheriff's office said it was shocked by
[1:30] the graphic pictures. We didn't like
[1:32] what we saw. We were seriously concerned
[1:34] about what we saw. We were concerned
[1:35] about our
[1:36] our officers' actions and we were
[1:39] embarrassed for our department. The
[1:41] incident occurred after an 80
