[0:00] with Shirley

[0:01] >> on your life. Get wired or you might

[0:04] just get left behind.

[0:13] From ABC News World Headquarters in New

[0:16] York, this is World News Tonight with

[0:19] Peter Jennings. Sitting in tonight, Jack

[0:22] Bour.

[0:23] >> Good evening. Before we get to our

[0:25] special look at the internet, a look at

[0:26] today's news. First to Russia, the

[0:28] bloodshed in Cheschna and the Kremlin's

[0:30] credibility problem. Russian officials

[0:32] have been all over the map defending

[0:34] last night's rocket attack on Cheschna's

[0:36] capital and denying they had anything to

[0:38] do with it. The attack may have killed

[0:40] 143 people and wounded more than 400.

[0:43] Chetchins say that many of the victims

[0:45] were civilians. Here's ABC's Klay Scott.

[0:49] This was the carnage in the Chetchin

[0:51] capital. And just as Russia's prime

[0:53] minister was saying his army was not

[0:55] responsible, a Russian military

[0:57] spokesman was saying, "Yes, we did

[0:59] attack the market. We were justified,"

[1:01] he said, "because it was a well-known

[1:03] arms market."

[1:05] >> Chetchin said, "Nonsense. No weapons are

[1:08] sold here, only fruits and vegetables.

[1:09] They killed women and children." It's

[1:12] hard to believe anything Russia is

[1:14] saying. The government said it would not

[1:15] attack Gnney. It has. The army promised

[1:18] precision bombs, but hundreds of

[1:20] civilians have been killed. Above all,

[1:23] Russia said it would never be drawn into

[1:25] another war in Cheschny. And now that is

[1:27] exactly what is happening with tanks

[1:29] moving toward Groy and what appears to

[1:32] be a massacre in a marketplace. Clay

[1:34] Scott, ABC News, Moscow.

[1:37] Convicted war criminal Maurice Papo
