[0:00] Nights on five
[0:05] >> from around the world and from CBS News
[0:08] headquarters in New York. This is the
[0:11] CBS Evening News with Dan Rather.
[0:14] >> Good evening. The curtain of coal that
[0:16] tonight stretches over most of the
[0:18] nation is something you can tell your
[0:19] great grandchildren about. It is of
[0:21] history-making proportions. Not in this
[0:23] century has there been anything like it.
[0:25] Across the Midwest, through the
[0:27] Northeast, and on down deep into the
[0:29] South and Southwest, city after city
[0:32] reports record low temperatures. An
[0:34] estimated 40 weather related deaths have

[1:20] stopped toeboat traffic on the Illinois
[1:22] River by clogging a lock and dam at
[1:24] Peoria. But the worst the weather
[1:26] brought was a rash of fires. In
[1:29] Illinois, fires killed three since the
[1:31] weekend. In Minnesota, four. Chicago's
[1:35] temperature climbed to four above today,
[1:37] 30° warmer than yesterday's a
