[0:00] be contaminated with the HIV virus and

[0:04] that your child had gotten AIDS or was

[0:06] likely to get it. Now, add to that that

[0:09] the product in question could cost you

[0:11] as much as $200,000 a year. As we showed

[0:15] you last September, that's the situation

[0:17] facing thousands of families of

[0:19] hemophiliacs who were put on this

[0:21] product to stop their bleeding before

[0:23] anyone realized that the blood supply in

[0:26] this country wasn't safe.

[0:28] Why is this product so expensive? It's

[0:31] so expensive because to be effective as

[0:33] a clotting factor, and that's what it's

[0:35] called, clotting factor, it has to be

[0:38] distilled from the blood of 20,000

[0:40] donors. That's also why it wre such

[0:43] havoc among hemophiliacs.

[0:45] Clotting factor first came on the market

[0:47] in the late 1960s when people were

[0:50] unaware of AIDS and the blood supply

[0:52] wasn't as carefully screened as it is

[0:54] now. But the cost of doing just that

[0:57] today, cleaning it up, has made this one

[0:59] of the most expensive items in

[1:01] healthcare. Virtually no one can afford

[1:04] it. And when you add the cost of AIDS,

[1:07] what you're getting is financial ruin

[1:09] for thousands of Americans.

[1:12] Take the Coons family. 13-year-old

[1:15] Michael Coons is one of the hemophiliacs

[1:17] who got AIDS from the clotting factor.

[1:20] When he was 3 years old, he had his

[1:22] tonsils out and needed infusions of the

[1:24] clotting factor. Unfortunately, this was

[1:26] in 1982 before the blood supply had been

[1:30] cleaned up.

[1:31] >> Can we have you lie down here? Don't

[1:33] step on your brother.

[1:36] >> Right now, he feels all right much of

[1:39] the time.

[1:39] >> Did you compete against him?
