[0:08] 2.

[0:09] >> The station that delivers the power of

[0:11] channel 2 news now brings you weather at

[0:14] the top of every hour.

[0:15] >> When weather is your top priority, turn

[0:17] it to at the top of every hour.

[0:20] >> Experience weather on the hour. It's

[0:22] only on channel 2, the power of 2000.

[0:30] Great deals for buying a home today on

[0:32] AM Northwest.

[0:39] >> Good morning, America. I'm Charles

[0:41] Gibson

[0:41] >> and I'm Diane Ser. We're continuing our

[0:43] coverage of the deadly tornadoes in

[0:45] Oklahoma and Kansas.

[0:46] >> The storms last night that devastated

[0:48] those states. The death toll in

[0:50] Oklahoma. The state medical examiner has

[0:51] raised the death toll now to 40 five

[0:54] dead in Kansas. More than 500 treated in

[0:57] hospitals in Oklahoma City alone. These

[1:00] storms really were very, very heavy,

[1:02] very wide, and the winds were ferocious.

[1:05] As we've said, our Tony Perkins flew

[1:07] into Oklahoma City overnight. We're

[1:09] going to go to him right now. Tony,

[1:11] >> Charlie, I want to show you the

[1:12] destruction that can be done by these

[1:14] strong tornadoes with the strong winds

[1:16] over 200 mph. If you look to my left,

[1:19] you can see that we are standing inside

[1:21] of a we are standing inside of the uh

[1:24] what was a convenience mart, a gas

[1:26] station convenience mart. Look at the

[1:28] metal here. It's completely twisted and

[1:30] broken. And uh what you can see is uh

[1:33] it's it's twisted brought down here.

[1:35] This is the entrance to the convenience

[1:37] mark. Yet, as you often see with these

[1:38] storms, these maps uh almost dried and

[1:41] not harmed at all. But all around here,

[1:43] everything else destroyed. behind me,

[1:45] this region, you can see uh the candy

[1:48] counters, where it was the candy

[1:49] counters, some of the display stands uh

[1:51] completely ripped apart. And in the

[1:54] middle of all of this, this car was

[1:56] picked up by the winds and thrown right

[1:59] into the middle of this convenience

[2:00] mark. Uh just shows you the power of

[2:02] these storms as they move through here.

[2:04] Uh unfortunately, there's concern that

[2:07] in this region, we could see more of

[2:09] this activity, more strong storms. As a

[2:12] matter of fact, during the course of

[2:12] this morning, we've had it coming

[2:14] through in waves. We've had heavy rain.

[2:16] We've had some hail, some thunder and

[2:17] lightning for maybe 3 or 4 minutes. It

[2:19] dissipates, then we have it again. We

[2:21] are told now there's a severe

[2:22] thunderstorm warning in effect for just

[2:24] to the west of where we are now. And

[2:26] those storms are tracking east. How did

[2:28] all this happen? Why did it happen? Take

[2:30] a look at this map. Unfortunately,

[2:31] yesterday conditions were perfect for

[2:33] this type of oper for for this type of

[2:35] activity. We had the warm, humid,

[2:37] unstable air to the east. We had colder

[2:40] air moving in from the west. Once that

[2:43] cold air hits the uh warm air, havoc

[2:45] ensues, you have the dry line there.

[2:47] That's the boundary between the humid

[2:49] air and the drier air. In addition, we

[2:51] had uh crosswinds. We had the

[2:53] southerntherly winds on the surface. And

[2:55] then we had uh the jetream winds coming

[2:57] from the west that provided strong

[2:58] rotation for the storms. And we've

[3:00] talked about the high the strong uh and

[3:03] and sizable funnel clouds that were seen

[3:05] and turned into tornadoes not just here

[3:08] but in Kansas as well. That is what set

[3:10] up the storms yesterday. Again under the

[3:12] gun for parts of this region for today

[3:15] and also parts of Louisiana, Arkansas

[3:18] and northeastern Texas. You want to keep

[3:19] your eyes open. Stay close to the media

[3:21] to radio and TV to see what's happening.

[3:23] That's what's happening with our weather

[3:24] across the country. Now here's what's

[3:26] happening in your neighborhood.

[3:27] >> Good morning. I'm Rhonda Shelby in the

[3:29] Channel 2 weather center. Look for

[3:30] showers on your commute to work or

[3:32] school this morning, but they decrease

[3:34] for more afternoon sunbreaks. Highs

[3:36] today will reach the upper 50s. And

[3:38] tonight, partly cloudy skies with lows

[3:40] dropping to 39.

[3:45] >> All right, we're seeing a little

[3:46] lightning here, so we're going to fold

[3:47] up shop for a few minutes. Diane, back

[3:49] to you.

[3:50] >> All right, Tony, head inside and we will

[3:52] keep you up to date on the news and the

[3:54] pictures out of Oklahoma and Kansas. But

[3:56] when we come back, a kind of break.

[3:58] We're going to continue our series Live

[4:00] Longer with Good Morning America. What

[4:02] science is doing to slow down the aging

[4:04] process at the cellular level.

[4:10] >> That's a very ugly dandelion. If you're

[4:12] going to find a dandelion anywhere

[4:13] around here, it's going to be in the

[4:14] neighbor's yard, not mine. I can't stand

[4:17] uh weeds in my yard of any sort. I use

[4:19] the Scots Turf Builder Plus 2. It's

[4:21] going to give you a strong root system

[4:23] like this to not allow any weeds to grow

[4:25] up in between it. The lawn is very thick

[4:27] and luxurious, and it's a lot of fun to

[4:29] just run around barefoot. I use Scott's

[4:31] Turf Builder Plus 2 to keep my lawn

[4:33] looking beautiful, and it really works.

[4:35] It's too bad my neighbor didn't. I beat

[4:38] the dandelions.

[4:40] At Lens Crafters, greatl looking

[4:42] prescription sunglasses don't have to

[4:43] cost a fortune. Lens Crafters can make

[4:45] hundreds of the latest styles with your

[4:47] prescription for only $99. And we'll

[4:49] have them ready in about an hour.

[4:50] Prescription sunglasses only $99. Hurry,

[4:54] offer ends soon.

[5:01] Nature made me a person of many parts.

[5:04] Nature made me determined to make all of

[5:07] them last.

[5:08] And thankfully, to help, there are

[5:11] premium quality nature-made vitamins and

[5:13] herbs like vitamin E, which research

[5:16] shows can help keep my heart healthy.

[5:19] There's no stopping me because nature

[5:23] made me.

[5:25] >> When you're flying around a track,

[5:27] danger is always right there beside you.

[5:30] But I've never been afraid because deep

[5:32] inside there's something greater than

[5:34] fear driving me. And that's my personal

[5:36] relationship with God. A relationship

[5:39] that turned my life around. And now

[5:41] there's a remarkable free book that can

[5:43] help do the same for you. It's called

[5:45] Power for Living. It's a simple,

[5:47] compelling guide to everyday life.

[5:49] >> To get your free copy of Power for

[5:51] Living, call toll-free 1 8004241000.

[5:56] >> Grand Cinnamon Rolls from Pillsbury.

[5:58] >> Get ready.

[5:59] >> The most enormous, ooey, gooey,

[6:02] luscious.

[6:03] >> Oh, should we wake the others?

[6:04] >> Let them sleep.

[6:05] >> Grand cinnamon rolls.

[6:07] >> They're not just big, they're grands.

[6:11] >> There it goes again.

[6:12] >> Have you had the check experience? It's

[6:14] all about crunching squares, basically.

[6:16] >> Squares.

[6:17] >> We're square people.

[6:19] >> Well,

[6:20] >> the squares go crunch.

[6:23] >> Squares make a good crunch.

[6:24] >> It's the explosion of milk and crunch

[6:27] you only get from checks.

[6:31] >> Flicks can't do that. Legs still have

[6:33] squares. The crunch delivers the milk.

[6:35] >> Ding-dong milk is here.

[6:37] >> If you had a check experience,

[6:40] >> it's good.

[6:43] For centuries, scientists have sought to

[6:45] unlock the secrets of the aging process.

[6:48] And now, researchers believe that

[6:49] they're closer than ever. One group of

[6:51] scientists at a biotech company in

[6:53] California, Geron Corporation, has been

[6:55] hard at work on a theory that addresses

[6:58] the aging process where it begins in the

[7:01] body cell, cell by cell. This morning in

[7:03] our series, Live Longer with Good

[7:05] Morning America, Dr. Dr. Nancy Sniderman

[7:07] has the latest on a term that may be new

[7:10] to you, but some scientists believe

[7:11] could become a household world word.

[7:14] TMAR.

[7:19] What if there were a switch inside our

[7:21] bodies that could keep our cells from

[7:23] dying and halt the hands of time? Seems

[7:26] like the stuff of science fiction. These

[7:28] images are not from outer space. They're

[7:31] from inside our bodies, our DNA strands.

[7:34] And the bright yellow tips of them may

[7:37] hold the keys to lifelong health.

[7:41] Imagine for a moment that these

[7:42] shoelaces are your DNA. And at the tips

[7:45] of these shoelaces, the little plastic

[7:47] bumpers, are something called tieumirs.

[7:49] As we age, they get shorter. And that's

[7:52] a problem. But scientists here at Giron

[7:55] have discovered that if they inject an

[7:56] enzyme called telmmerase, they can not

[7:59] only make these little ends get longer,

[8:01] but they may in fact be able to

[8:03] the aging process.

[8:05] >> Tieumirs and tomeores are critically

[8:06] important in cell mortality and cell

[8:10] immortality and hence in in the aging of

[8:12] all of us.

[8:13] >> Telmmerase is produced in humans but

[8:16] only while we are developing in uterero.

[8:19] Dr. Cal Harley is the chief scientific

[8:21] officer at Jiron. He along with

[8:23] collaborating researchers at the

[8:25] University of Texas cloned a gene that

[8:28] made it possible to reactivate tmmerase

[8:30] in human tissue making those cells

[8:33] immortal.

[8:34] >> Our research is directed at

[8:36] understanding the the fundamental

[8:37] process that gives rise to aging. But

[8:40] really what we're trying to do is to

[8:42] come up with better medicines to treat

[8:44] the diseases that cut us short in in

[8:46] life. In the last year, research at

[8:49] Giron has moved to the next phase in

[8:51] trying to genetically alter the paths of

[8:54] those specific age related diseases,

[8:56] even cancer. Dr. Harley showed me some

[8:59] of his work on retinal cells from the

[9:01] human eye.

[9:02] >> Now, I want to show you what old cells

[9:04] look like.

[9:05] >> The goal is to use tmerase to reverse or

[9:08] stop the progression of macular

[9:10] degeneration, one of the leading causes

[9:13] of age related vision loss.

[9:15] This is just one example. But the

[9:18] applications of this research are

[9:19] extraordinary. In cancer cells which are

[9:23] immortal and multiply quickly, tmemerase

[9:26] might be turned off or inhibited causing

[9:28] them to die.

[9:30] >> To manipulate talomeorase by inhibition,

[9:32] we have the potential to treat every

[9:35] cancer. We believe because the enzyme is

[9:37] on in all cancers. While the work here

[9:39] at Jiron is still in preclinical stages,

[9:42] researchers are forging ahead trying to

[9:45] decode the mechanisms of disease and the

[9:47] mysteries of father time.

[9:50] >> Some people who are so excited about

[9:52] this work say it could be one of the

[9:53] most important scientific discoveries of

[9:55] this century. Do you agree?

[9:57] >> Obviously, I'm biased. This has been a

[9:59] breakthrough in our understanding of the

[10:01] aging process.

[10:04] >> And joining us now from Menllo Park,

[10:06] California, is Dr. Thomas Okarma, vice

[10:08] president of research and development

[10:09] for Geron Corporation. And we thank you,

[10:11] doctor, for joining us. For my planning

[10:14] purposes, just so I know how many more

[10:16] closed, things like that. When will

[10:19] these things be available for human

[10:22] trials? Anytime in the next 5 years?

[10:25] >> Yes, we expect to be able to apply some

[10:28] of the new principles we're developing

[10:30] here in human clinical trials within the

[10:32] next 5 years. One of the concerns, and

[10:35] it was raised obliquely by Nancy in the

[10:37] piece, is that if you start tinkering

[10:40] with the immortality part of our genes,

[10:43] that you could in fact be creating more

[10:45] cancer cells. Is that the biggest

[10:48] problem right now?

[10:49] >> Well, that's one of them. Although we

[10:51] are reassured by some recent data we and

[10:54] our collaborators have generated that

[10:57] shows in the cells that we have

[10:58] immortalized by tomeores that those

[11:01] cells do not exhibit any cancerous

[11:04] features. So we have separated the

[11:08] cancer uh portions of tomeores from

[11:11] cellular immortality.

[11:13] >> I understand that you have an

[11:14] announcement to make today that's going

[11:15] to shake up the business world for sure.

[11:17] It has to do with a company that is

[11:19] famous for cloning. What's happening?

[11:22] >> Well, today we are announcing the

[11:24] acquisition of the technology called

[11:26] nuclear transfer that produced Dolly the

[11:29] cloned sheep. by combining this

[11:32] technology with the tomeorase capability

[11:35] that you've just heard about and a third

[11:38] technology which we uh described back in

[11:41] November pur potent stem cells we think

[11:44] we will be able to generate cells and

[11:46] tissues for organ repair that will not

[11:49] be rejected by the body's immune system

[11:52] if we're successful in this effort it

[11:54] will mean that we'll be able to uh

[11:56] restore degenerative organ function by

[11:59] the injection of healthy, youthful

[12:01] cells.

[12:02] >> All right, Dr. Karma, again, it's a

[12:04] whole new chapter in science and living

[12:08] longer and um hope you'll keep us a

[12:10] breast of it along the way. We thank you

[12:12] for joining us.

[12:12] >> You're welcome.

[12:13] >> And hope we're all around to see it when

[12:16] it finally uh hits the human trials and

[12:20] becomes available. Well, coming up next,

[12:22] a sister act hits the big time. The

[12:25] family foresome of Malberry Lane joins

[12:27] us and sings for us. Just

[12:31] >> I'm

[12:34] holding.

[12:50] There's jillions of things kids can do

[12:52] with new doll fruit bowls.

[12:59] Eating the delicious fruit is just one.

[13:04] Gotcha.

[13:05] >> New Dole fruit balls. Half the fun is

[13:08] when they're done.

[13:09] >> I love my job.

[13:10] >> Last night we had free breakins.

[13:12] >> But I work hard for my money.

[13:14] >> Mason white.

[13:16] >> Since Rite gave me this right rewards

[13:17] card, I got all kinds of ways to save. I

[13:19] got special deals all over the store.

[13:22] Even 10% off the right brand. I can save

[13:25] every time I shop. All I do is show the

[13:27] card.

[13:28] >> Sign up for Right Rewards only at

[13:30] Riteid.

[13:30] >> Earning my money isn't easy.

[13:32] >> But with my Right Rewards card, saving

[13:35] is

[13:35] >> right. It's not just a store. It's a

[13:38] solution.

[13:39] >> Remodeling my home was simple and fun.

[13:41] All it took was one phone call to Vinker

[13:44] Brothers. For over 30 years, the Vinker

[13:46] family have been providing dependable

[13:48] remodeling and home repair service. They

[13:50] make it easy by taking care of all the

[14:09] >> North America's number one festival is

[14:11] back. Portland's Cinco de Mayo. KATU.

[14:14] with the power of 2000 invites you and

[14:16] your family to the festivities at

[14:18] Waterfront Park May 5th through 9th.

[14:21] This year's celebration is looking to be

[14:23] bigger and better with Mexican food,

[14:25] music, and dancing featuring the

[14:26] renowned ballet from Guadalajara and

[14:29] much more. Don't miss Portland Cinco de

[14:31] Mayo Festival presented by the Portland

[14:33] Guadalajara Sister City Association and

[14:35] Katu, the power of 2000.

[14:40] >> Tonight, relationships begin. Friend of

[14:43] mine gave me tickets for the Mets. I was

[14:45] wondering if maybe the boys would like

[14:46] to go.

[14:47] >> Can I get four tickets?

[14:48] >> Absolutely.

[14:49] >> Relationships change.

[14:50] >> I asked her kids to a ball game.

[14:52] >> She'll tell me you're taking her, too.

[14:53] >> What's just one extra ticket?

[14:55] >> All new NYPD Blue. ABC Tonight. Viewer

[14:58] discretion advised.

[15:01] >> We'd like to invite you to the opening

[15:02] of our new club, Sounds of Salsa.

[15:04] >> Latin Grey Troves will perform opening

[15:07] night.

[15:07] >> Opens tomorrow on All My Children, ABC

[15:10] Daytime.

[15:11] Could you end my questioning?

[15:17] >> You are about to meet a musical group

[15:18] that's going to be big and you're going

[15:20] to see them before they really hit it.

[15:22] Billboard magazine says this is the best

[15:24] new band they've heard this year. The

[15:26] name of the group is Malberry Lane

[15:28] because that's where they live, right?

[15:30] >> That's right.

[15:30] >> These are the four Rut sisters. This is

[15:33] Jamie, Rachel, Heather, Ally. Oldest to

[15:38] youngest, left to right on your screen.

[15:41] Now, this is you've made

[15:42] >> an album that's not coming out for a

[15:44] week, right?

[15:45] >> Right. It comes out next Tuesday.

[15:46] >> And this is your first album for a major

[15:48] label.

[15:48] >> Right.

[15:49] >> But you guys made your own record and

[15:52] printed it yourself on a CD and

[15:53] distributed it. And

[15:54] >> that's right. Last May we um we recorded

[15:57] our own album. We produced it ourselves

[15:58] and we wrote all the songs and we um

[16:01] went on to distribute it and we marketed

[16:03] it in the Midwest. And it

[16:05] >> So you were giving it to friends and

[16:06] uncles and aunts and whatever. This

[16:08] group is from Omaha, Nebraska, which has

[16:10] had some rough weather, but none of the

[16:11] big storms that we saw in Oklahoma and

[16:13] uh and in Kansas, but you distributed

[16:15] this yourself, and somebody from the

[16:16] major labels heard it,

[16:17] >> right? Well, what happened was we've

[16:19] played a lot of clubs and coffee houses

[16:21] throughout the Midwest, and we wanted to

[16:23] give people who came to hear us

[16:25] something they could take home with them

[16:26] because they really enjoyed our original

[16:28] songs. And that's what prompted us to

[16:30] make the CD. And then we sold a lot of

[16:32] units on it. And then a lot of major

[16:33] labels came calling and Refuge MCA is

[16:36] who we love the best. So, we signed with

[16:37] them last November

[16:38] >> and made a six album deal. Is that

[16:40] right?

[16:41] >> Yes.

[16:41] >> You're going to be working till

[16:44] >> you're going to be working from now till

[16:45] the time 70 years old.

[16:46] >> Yeah. We're stuck with each other for a

[16:48] long time.

[16:49] >> That's not always a good thing.

[16:51] >> You sang as a family growing up. Is that

[16:52] right?

[16:53] >> That's right.

[16:53] >> And from that, the music developed,

[16:55] which you write yourselves,

[16:56] >> right?

[16:56] >> Name of the album is

[16:58] >> Run Your Own, which is actually a piece

[17:00] of advice our dad always gave us. It's

[17:01] Run Your Own Race.

[17:02] >> Run Your Own Race, which is available in

[17:04] record stores starting next Tuesday.

[17:05] >> Yes. And this song is from the album and

[17:07] it's called

[17:08] >> Harmless.

[17:09] >> All right.

[17:09] >> It's about you.

[17:10] >> About me?

[17:12] >> Oh, yeah. It is about me. Darn. Here's

[17:15] Mel Ver.

[17:21] >> I apologize,

[17:23] baby. I couldn't describe how I hurt

[17:26] inside.

[17:27] And so I take it out on you.

[17:31] I think we're both to blame. You storm

[17:35] like thunder and we pound like rain

[17:38] and just like we always do.

[17:42] You say you had enough. The water is

[17:44] rough. The river between us is raging

[17:49] higher than ever before.

[17:52] I know you're having a doubt. So we can

[17:54] work it out if you wrap your love around

[17:57] me. Cuz I ain't want to fight anymore.

[18:02] You got to believe. I'm begging you.

[18:06] Please hold me harmless tonight.

[22:02] We're going to go back to Tony Perkins

[22:04] in Oklahoma City. Understand the

[22:05] lightning has abaded a bit. Tony, what

[22:08] do you see now?

[22:10] >> Uh what we see now is people who look

[22:12] like they're starting to head back into

[22:13] this region to check on their homes and

[22:15] that type of activity. Uh the police

[22:17] seem to be letting people through. They

[22:18] weren't doing that earlier. And uh I

[22:21] think they're also the police and other

[22:22] officials are going to be surveying

[22:24] damage around this region because

[22:25] they've been waiting for the daylight

[22:27] area so that they could do that. It was

[22:28] dark of course overnight and they

[22:30] weren't able to uh see a lot of what had

[22:32] happened last night. Uh again, the

[22:35] latest count uh 40 dead in Oklahoma, I

[22:38] believe five in Kansas. We're going to

[22:40] stay on top of the scene and we'll be

[22:42] back here tomorrow morning, I suspect,

[25:33] obviously through the program tomorrow.

[25:34] Also tomorrow, Magic Johnson, as we

[25:36] said, he's got a new business

[25:37] enterprise. And it's hard to believe,

[25:39] eight years since he was diagnosed HIV

[25:42] positive, and we're going to hear more

[25:43] about his health. And um we're going to

[25:45] be cheering up Charlie now quite a bit

[25:47] since he's been called harmless by those

[25:49] gorgeous young girls. I just want them

[25:51] to know he's not as harmless as he

[25:53] seems.

[25:55] >> Oh, that's the nicest thing I think

[25:56] anybody ever said to me. Aren't those

[26:01] album is comes out on Tuesday, and

[26:03] they're so excited. And my goodness,

[26:04] they certainly don't need a transfusion

[26:46] >> Home improvements final five followed by

[26:48] the Ulies begins tonight on ABC.

[26:51] >> If violence at your school has you

[27:43] President Clinton heads to Europe today

[27:45] to talk to NATO officials about Kosovo,

[27:47] but the administration is downplaying

[27:49] any expectations about a diplomatic

[27:51] solution. Meanwhile, the crisis is

[27:54] hitting closer to home. 120 members of

[27:56] the 939th Air Force Rescue Wing is on

[28:00] its way to the Balkans this morning.

[28:02] Minutes ago, the C5 transport plane

[28:05] carrying helicopters and other equipment

[28:14] tearful goodbye out there this morning.

[28:16] Other news, a key witness in the seaside

[28:18] double murder says he does not want to

[28:19] testify at trial. Bradley Price faces a

[28:22] judge Friday for aggravated murder

[28:24] charges. Jesse Mallister has already

[28:26] admitted shooting two people in the

[28:28] Thrill murders to save himself from the

[28:30] death penalty. He is now serving life in

[28:32] prison. Prosecutors say they will call

[28:35] Mallister to the stand, but they admit

[28:37] they don't know what he's going to say.

[28:38] And if he won't talk, prosecutors are

[28:41] prepared to use a videotaped interview.

[28:43] While the calendar may say spring, but

[28:45] skiers have received one last winter

[28:47] gift. People up at Timberline received

[28:49] more than 28 ines of snow in the last

[28:51] two days. That brings the snowpack up

[28:53] there to more than 300 in. If you're
