[0:00] Lord Muhammad Farah Adid in Moadishu.
[0:03] Adid has been blamed for an ambush that
[0:05] killed 23 UN peacekeepers earlier this
[0:07] month. The air and ground defensive
[0:09] began before dawn and was met with
[0:11] resistance from Somali militia men. A UN
[0:14] official told Reuters news agency five
[0:16] peacekeepers were killed and 44 wounded,
[0:19] including one American. Somali
[0:21] casualties were also heavy. Adid's
[0:24] compound was severely damaged, but the
[0:26] warlord escaped capture. Some of the UN
[0:28] fire hit civilian targets, killing or
[0:30] wounding a number of Somali. In
[0:33] Washington, Defense Secretary Les Aspen
[0:35] explained the purpose of the operation.

[1:07] Americans got involved. He was the one
[1:10] who was the most entrangigent in the
[1:12] discussions going on and uh all of that
[1:16] was uh capped then by his uh attack and
[1:21] the the ambush that he laid for the
[1:23] Pakistanis.
[1:25] uh showed just a total disregard for the
[1:27] UN force.
[1:29] >> We'll have more on this story right
[1:30] after the news summary.

[1:34] admitted today his peace plan was dead.
[1:37] Lord Owen urged the Muslim government to
[1:40] allow the republic to be split into
[1:42] three ethnic states. A plan proposed at
[1:44] peace talks yesterday in Geneva. Owen
