[0:06] will be in the shadow of the service
[0:10] module uh these three astronauts as we
[0:14] have noted throughout have handled
[0:17] themselves uh perfectly and handled the
[0:20] problems perfectly so far what kind of
[0:23] men are they really David Schumer can
[0:25] tell us more about them David
[0:32] the crew used to joke about Apollo 13
[0:34] The Unlucky number Jim level the
[0:37] commander is anything but superstitious
[0:39] Fred Hayes the lunar module pilot said
[0:41] he wish they could launch on a Friday
[0:42] the 13th but when Ken madingley was
[0:45] bumped the laughter turned a little
[0:47] bitter and the new member of the crew
[0:49] Jack swager was much too busy for jokes
[0:52] like maddingley swager is a bachelor
[0:54] whose life has revolved around flying
[0:56] since he was a Youngster he delivered
[0:58] papers to earn money for his flying
[1:00] lessons as an astronaut Swagger has been
[1:02] more serious than in his college days at
[1:04] the University of Colorado when everyone
[1:06] called him big Swig and he was president
[1:08] of his Fraternity in the two days before
[1:11] his flight Swagger took the toughest
[1:12] hazing of his life proving to a frankly
[1:14] skeptical Jim level that he was ready it
[1:17] came so fast he didn't even have time to
[1:19] call his family back in Denver his
[1:20] mother learned the news from a CBS
[1:22] reporter said only recently her son had
[1:24] told her not to worry there was no
[1:26] chance he would be substituted in the
[1:27] last two weeks before a mission Jim
[1:30] Lovel resisted the change in his crew
[1:32] for understandable reasons reasons that
[1:34] had nothing to do with swagger
[1:35] personally he had a good deal of pride
[1:38] in the two young rookies
