[0:02] Storming ashore, Hurricane Brett slams
[0:04] into the Texas Gulf Coast with powerful
[0:07] winds and driving rain. Ready or not,
[0:10] Texas residents brace themselves for a
[0:12] powerful blow. Sensing trouble, experts
[0:15] try to figure out how this storm grew so
[0:18] big so fast. And a few last miracles
[0:22] aside, rescue crews in Turkey are ending
[0:25] the search for survivors.
[0:28] This is the CBS Evening News
[0:32] with John Roberts.
[0:35] Good evening. The first hurricane of the
[0:37] 1999 season is a monster and it is
[0:41] battering the coast of Texas tonight.
[0:43] Hurricane Brett is taking aim on a
[0:45] stretch of coastline between Brownsville
[0:47] and Corpus Christi with sustained winds
[0:49] of 140 mph, making it a dangerous
[0:53] category 4 storm. The Federal Emergency
[0:56] Management Agency says it has the
[0:58] potential to be a major disaster. We
[1:00] have expanded coverage of Hurricane
[1:02] Brett tonight, beginning with Bob
[1:03] McNamera in Baffin Bay.

[1:08] coast. It's about 30 mi south of Corpus
[1:11] Christi. It's an area of fishing
[1:13] resorts, small farms, and some family
[1:15] homes. It's a relatively sparssely
[1:18] populated area, but some forecasters say
[1:20] it could be in or near the bullseye of
[1:23] Hurricane Brett when it comes ashore.
[1:25] All day here, the winds and the rains
[1:27] have been building. And though some say
[1:29] they will stay here and ride out the
[1:31] storm, others say they're scared and
[1:33] they're getting out.
[1:36] >> We're just taking a guess right now
[1:38] where we're going to go, but we're going
[1:39] away from the water.
