[0:00] Um,
[0:00] >> there's a waiting list to put this on
[0:02] their rooftop.
[0:03] >> A waiting list to put this on their
[0:04] rooftop.
[0:05] >> Thank you.
[0:06] >> One rooftop activist who made the climb
[0:08] is 84year-old Ann Wood.
[0:11] >> It might have some impact. It may not,
[0:13] but at least you know you did something.
[0:15] >> Just being here to show my support. I
[0:16] think that's the most important thing.
[0:18] >> Not to be outdone, a Republican army of
[0:20] 200 volunteers has painted 20,000 signs
[0:24] tailor made for each night of the
[0:26] convention.
[0:27] >> Each states has their own sort of
[0:28] messaging. We have uh you know certain
[0:30] things that that are key for states. For
[0:31] example, I'm from Maine, so we got
[0:32] maniacs for Bush.
[0:33] >> Thank you.
[0:34] >> Whatever the sign reads, both sides have
[0:36] a message to get across.
[0:37] >> It's a good thing Carrie only has five
[0:39] letters.
[0:39] >> Very good. Very good.
[0:41] >> How far across depends on the messenger.
[0:44] Jim Acasta, CBS News, Brooklyn.
[0:48] >> And our message to you. Thank you for
[0:50] joining us. This is CBS News Up.
[1:19] Promises, promises. Four years ago,
[1:21] President Bush accepted the Republican
[1:23] nomination with these words. I will not
[1:25] attack a part of this country because I
[1:28] want to lead the whole of it.
[1:29] >> As he prepares to accept the nomination
[1:31] again, how has he done? We'll examine
[1:33] the president's record and give you the
[1:35] inside story tonight on the CBS Evening
[1:37] News with Dan Rather experience CBS
[1:42] News.
[1:47] >> Opening night of the Republican
[1:48] convention. Rudy Giuliani remembers 9/11
[1:51] and Senator John McCain salutes the
[1:53] president's war on terrorism. Wash out
[1:56] in Richmond. Heavy rain and flooding
[1:58] from tropical storm Gaston swamp
[2:00] Virginia. And jury poll. Prospective
[2:04] jurors in the Kobe Bryant case quizzed
[2:06] on race, sexual assault, and justice for
[2:08] the famous.
[2:11] This is a CBS Morning News for Tuesday,
[2:13] August 31st.
[2:19] Thanks for joining us. I'm Melissa
[2:20] McDermad in for Susan McGinness. The
[2:22] opening night theme at the Republican
[2:24] National Convention was clear. Speaker
[2:26] after speaker recounted the 9/11 attacks
[2:29] and praised the president's war on
[2:30] terror. As Bill Plant reports, two GOP
[2:33] stars took center stage, calling
[2:35] President Bush the right man to continue
[2:37] the fight.
[2:39] >> President Bush sees world terrorism for
[2:42] the evil that it is. The legacy of
[2:46] September 11th is a highly emotional
[2:48] subject in this city and Giuliani
[2:50] invoked it in support of the president's
[2:52] decision to go after those responsible.
[2:54] >> So long as George Bush is our president,
[2:57] is there any doubt they will continue to
[3:00] hear from us.
[3:03] >> Also featured on the first night,
[3:04] Senator John McCain. Four years ago, he
[3:07] was George Bush's bitter opponent. Now
[3:09] perhaps the most popular Republican in
[3:11] the party, McCain reached out to
[3:13] independents and Democrats, backing the
[3:15] president's choice to go to war.
[3:18] >> Our choice wasn't between a benign
[3:21] status quo and the bloodshed of war. It
[3:24] was between war and a graver threat.
[3:28] Don't let anyone tell you otherwise.
[3:32] McCain had no harsh words for John
[3:34] Kerry, but he did go after Michael
[3:36] Moore, who made the film Fahrenheit 911,
[3:38] without naming it, a disingenuous
[3:41] filmmaker who would have us believe
[3:46] who would have us believe, my friends,
[3:49] who would have us believe that Saddam's
[3:51] Iraq was an oasis of peace. The
[3:54] convention was barely underway when
[3:56] Democrats pounced on the president's
[3:58] answer to a question about whether the
[4:00] war on terror was a conflict that could
[4:02] be won.
[4:03] >> I don't think you can win it, but I
[4:04] think you can create conditions so that
[4:06] the uh those who use terror as a tool
[4:10] are uh less acceptable in parts of the
[4:12] world. Let's put it that way.
[4:14] >> The White House says the president meant
[4:16] the war could not be won in a
[4:18] conventional sense. During last night's
[4:20] convention session, a heckler breached
[4:22] the security surrounding Vice President
[4:24] Cheney. The protester dressed in a red
[4:26] shirt got within 40 ft of the Vice
[4:28] President's box. He was screaming and
[4:30] pointing before he was grabbed by Secret
[4:32] Service agents. He did not have the
[4:34] proper credentials and is being held for
[4:36] questioning. This morning, New York
[4:38] police are searching for a protester who
[4:40] attacked a detective.
[4:46] The protesters stomped and punched the
[4:47] policeman outside Madison Square Garden.
[4:49] The incident was triggered when police
[4:51] tried to push demonstrators away from
[4:53] the convention site. The policeman is
[4:55] hospitalized in serious condition.
[4:58] This morning, much of southeast Virginia
[5:00] is flooded thanks to tropical storm
[5:01] Gaston. In Richmond, high water storm
[5:04] through the streets, damaging hundreds
[5:05] of homes and cars. A state of emergency
[5:07] has been declared and more than 75,000
[5:10] customers
