[2:06] >> Don't miss CSI CBS Thursday.

[2:12] >> The highlight of this night at the

[2:13] Democratic convention is coming up very

[2:15] soon. The Edwards family will be taking

[2:17] the podium. Oldest child, daughter Kate,

[2:20] wife Elizabeth, and Senator John. CBS's

[2:22] Jim Axel riders down on the floor very

[2:24] near the delegation from their home

[2:26] state of North Carolina. Jim,

[2:28] >> Dan, we're just about a dozen or so rows

[2:30] behind the North Carolina North Carolina

[2:32] delegation. A delegation which got a

[2:33] significant upgrade in its uh floor plan

[2:36] just about 22 days ago when its senior

[2:38] senator was named to the ticket. Okay.

[2:40] >> You know, I had a chance to ask John

[2:41] Edwards oh about a dozen or so times on

[2:43] the campaign when he was still pursuing

[2:45] the presidency if he had any interest in

[2:47] the number two slot. I asked him a dozen

[2:49] different ways. He gave me the same

[2:50] answer every time. No, absolutely not.

[2:53] Not interested. But according to

[2:54] campaign insiders, it was the day after

[2:56] he withdrew from the presidential race

[2:58] that he began to actively campaign for

[3:01] the number two slot. A little bit of

[3:03] perspective about this remarkable rise

[3:05] to national political prominence for

[3:07] John Edwards. He's about to address this

[3:09] convention in advance of accepting its

[3:11] party's nomination to run for the vice

[3:13] presidency of the United States. It's

[3:15] only his second Democratic Party

[3:17] convention. Dan,

[3:19] >> Jim Axelrod down on the floor. Thanks,

[3:21] Jim. Now, here's what's going to happen.

[3:24] >> Kate Edwards, the oldest of three

[3:27] Edwards children living. They lost a son

[3:30] in 1996.

[3:32] Kate Edwards will introduce her mother,

[3:34] Elizabeth, who in turn will then

[3:37] introduce Senator John Edwards. That's

[3:40] going to be the play here. The hall is

[3:43] absolutely packed. It has not been for

[3:45] every hour, every day of this

[3:47] convention. But as is the usual case in

[3:50] conventions, when the vice president's

[3:53] nominees deliver his acceptance speech,

[3:56] uh the hall fills up. Kate Edwards with

[3:59] her entrance.

[4:05] Recent graduate of Princeton University.

[4:14] 22 years old.

[4:19] >> By now, I'm not sure it's more of you

[4:21] know me as John Elizabeth's daughter or

[4:23] as Jackie McLar's older sister, but

[4:26] tonight I can tell you that I am the

[4:28] proud child of two people who have made

[4:30] our home a place of hope. two people who

[4:33] will make sure that our country is a

[4:35] land of opportunity and possibility when

[4:37] my dad is the next vice president of the

[4:40] United States of America.

[4:46] And standing beside him tonight,

[4:48] standing beside him always is his wife,

[4:52] my mom, Elizabeth.

[4:55] Both my mom and my dad have always

[4:58] taught me to dream big and reach high.

[5:01] Now, as a young woman about to head out

[5:03] into the real world, I have one thought

[5:05] on my mind. If I can live a life even

[5:08] half as accomplished as my mother's,

[5:10] then I'll have done all right. The truth

[5:12] is, my mom has really done it all. She's

[5:15] been a star law student and a PTA

[5:17] member, a successful attorney and a

[5:20] coach, a public servant and a mentor,

[5:24] and above all, a mother who is always

[5:27] there for us. Always.

[5:32] But I look up to her not only because of

[5:34] what she does with her life, but because

[5:36] of the way she lives it. With a strength

[5:39] that inspires, with a courage that

[5:41] carries on, with a kindness that keeps

[5:44] our front door open and our family and

[5:46] friends close, and with an optimism that

[5:49] keeps her joined to my father at the

[5:52] heart. I know some may find it easier to

[5:55] look at the hurt in the world and the

[5:56] challenges around us and simply turn

[5:58] away or sit at home. But we were raised

[6:01] by our parents to believe differently

[6:03] because my mom and my dad believe

[6:04] differently. John, Carrie, and Teresa

[6:06] believe differently, too. And that's why

[6:09] together we're going to change this

[6:11] country.

[6:14] They say a ship in a harbor is safe.

[6:17] That is not what chips are built for.

[6:19] They're built for exploring new

[6:20] possibilities. And to quote from my

[6:23] mom's favorite poem, they are built for

[6:25] allowing us to believe that a further

[6:27] shore is reachable from here. My mom

[6:30] believes she has brought joy to our home

[6:33] and love to our hearts. And she will

[6:35] join my father in bringing hope to

[6:37] America when she is the next second lady

[6:39] of the United States.

[6:43] Ladies and gentlemen, my mother,

[6:46] Elizabeth Edwards.

[6:57] Elizabeth Edwards married John Edwards

[7:01] in 1977. This month they celebrated

[7:03] their 27th wedding anniversary.

[7:06] She is a graduate of the University of

[7:08] North Carolina Law School where she met

[7:10] her husband.

[7:12] She's appreciated for her downto-earth

[7:14] real neighborly qualities. She is 55

[7:18] years old. Thank you.

[7:27] I'm Elizabeth Edwards and tonight I am

[7:29] the very proud mother of Kate Edwards.

[7:36] John and I have been truly blessed with

[7:38] a beautiful and strong family. And we're

[7:41] blessed too by you, our great Democratic

[7:44] family.

[7:49] You have no idea how great you all look

[7:52] from right here.

[7:55] >> This has been quite a year for John and

[7:57] for me. We started last January

[7:59] crisscrossing America, talking about how

[8:01] with determination and vision and

[8:03] optimism, we can end the injustice of

[8:06] two Americans. And this January,

[8:10] it's going to end when we move two great

[8:12] friends, two great Americans, John Kerry

[8:14] and Terresa Hines Kerry into 1600

[8:17] Pennsylvania Avenue.

[8:26] Terresa Terresa represents the victory

[8:29] of spirit and will over tyranny and

[8:32] tragedy and she will be the most

[8:34] generous first lady in the history of

[8:36] this country. I am so honored to stand

[8:38] with her.

[8:44] John Ky was in the Navy and so was my

[8:46] father. I grew up traveling around the

[8:48] world, living on Navy bases, but I

[8:51] always knew I was home when I saw the

[8:52] American flag. Like John Kerry, my

[8:55] father fought for this country. Like

[8:57] John Kerry, he was decorated, risking

[8:59] his life in her service. My father had

[9:02] another thing in common with John Kerry

[9:04] and with so many of the uniform men and

[9:06] women across this country and around the

[9:09] world. He has the right stuff.

[9:21] I married a man with the right stuff,

[9:23] too.

[9:28] He found his own way to serve.

[9:31] in his community. He was the driving

[9:33] force behind two afterchool centers that

[9:35] meet the needs of young people. He was

[9:38] Santa Claus to needy families. And when

[9:39] that wasn't enough, to an entire inner

[9:41] city child care center. You know, he

[9:44] even looks dashing in a Santa suit.

[9:48] In youth activities, he did what so many

[9:50] Americans do, giving up their weekends

[9:52] and evenings to coach young people in

[9:54] basketball and soccer, in his church, in

[9:57] urban ministries, in his prayer groups,

[9:59] and for 20 years in his work fighting

[10:02] for those who could not fight for

[10:03] themselves.

[10:07] It never

[10:09] it never mattered how powerful the

[10:12] opponent. It never mattered how

[10:14] entrenched the interest. If the cause

[10:16] was just and his voice was needed, he

[10:19] was there. And now he serves the great

[10:22] state of North Carolina

[10:28] in the United States Senate, still

[10:30] fighting for those who count on him to

[10:33] be their voice. Using his intellect and

[10:36] his eloquence, he has fought to improve

[10:38] our health care choices and to protect

[10:39] our environment.

[10:41] and he called attention to the threat of

[10:44] terrorism before September 11th.

[10:49] You know, I married the smartest,

[10:52] toughest, sweetest man I know. And in

[10:55] two days, we will celebrate 27 years of

[10:58] marriage,

[11:01] the way we always do.

[11:05] We'll do it the way we always do at

[11:08] Wendy's.

[11:10] Whether it's Wendy's or Washington, I

[11:13] found that it's true. It's not where you

[11:15] go, it's who you go with.

[11:19] But none of the things none of the

[11:21] things I've mentioned are the reason

[11:22] that I married John Edwards. I married

[11:25] him because he was the single most

[11:27] optimistic person that I have ever

[11:30] known.

[11:31] He knew there was a brighter day ahead,

[11:33] even as he swept the floors in the

[11:35] cotton
