[0:03] right after the following CBS News
[0:05] special report.
[0:24] CBS News coverage of campaign 84
[0:26] continues tonight. The Super Tuesday
[0:28] presidential primaries. Reporting from
[0:31] CBS News election headquarters in New
[0:33] York, here is Dan Rather.
[0:35] >> Good evening. With Super Tuesday still
[0:37] underway, here are the results so far.
[0:39] The overview is that the candidacy of
[0:41] Senator Gary Hart of Colorado keeps
[0:43] moving like a fast freight. The
[0:45] candidacy of Walter Montdale is off the
[0:47] side rails and is moving forward again.
[0:49] He wins some. Jesse Jackson continues
[0:52] chugging along and looks like a stair.
[0:54] George McGovern has dropped out like a
[0:56] cut loose caboose and John Glenn may not
[0:58] be far behind him. Now with 511
[1:01] delegates at stake today, there were
[1:04] five primary states, the ones in red in
[1:06] the east and four caucus states. Of the
[1:09] 511 delegates at stake today, of the
[1:12] ones decided thus far, CBS News
[1:14] estimates that Gary Hart has 165, Walter
[1:17] Montdale 117, Jackson, McGovern, and
[1:21] Glenn and uncommitted trailing behind in
[1:24] the order noted on that board. Now, of
[1:26] the states today, Gary Hart wins in the
[1:29] following states. Hart wins the Florida
[1:32] primary. He also wins the Massachusetts
[1:36] primary. Hart also wins the Rhode Island
[1:39] primary and in the first of the caucus
[1:41] states decided, Gary Hart wins in
[1:43] Oklahoma. Now, Walter Montdale has won
[1:47] in a close race in Georgia and Montdale
[1:50] has also won in Alabama. An obviously
[1:53] jubilant Gary Hart got together with his
[1:56] supporters in a Washington ballroom and
[1:59] claimed victory as the returns came in.
