[0:00] Well, let's talk about it.

[0:01] It feels like the whole math world is on fire

[0:03] talking about AI in math.

[0:05] I have been thinking about

[0:06] this for a very long time.

[0:07] So I put up this post last week soliciting

[0:09] questions that people had on the matter,

[0:11] and a lot of what I saw were

[0:12] comments from students,

[0:14] maybe PhD students or undergrads who had been

[0:16] planning on going into math or adjacent

[0:18] theoretical fields who were basically just saying,

[0:21] what am I supposed to do?

[0:22] What am I supposed to do next

[0:24] when the future seems so uncertain?

[0:25] You know there's a lot of fear that math is dead

[0:28] or math is solved or even if you don't believe

[0:30] those that whatever the thing that math will

[0:33] become is is unpleasant or not what you wanted

[0:35] to do.

[0:36] I've also talked to a lot of different

[0:38] professors who are essentially throwing up

[0:40] their hands saying what am I supposed to tell

[0:42] my students like how am I supposed to advise

[0:44] them in this moment and I thought for this

[0:46] video I would focus on one specific comment

[0:48] that I saw that felt emblematic of so many others.

[0:52] A math PhD here, just tell me what to do tomorrow.

[0:55] So I would make the case, and I want

[0:56] to see if you agree with me on this,

[0:58] that there has never been a

[0:59] better time to go into math,

[1:00] that there's never been a

[1:01] better time to fund math,

[1:03] and that maybe the most radical change

[1:05] that we'll see in this moment is a

[1:07] reframing of how we assign academic credit,

[1:09] but that the actual institution of math and

[1:12] what it is remains surprisingly unaffected,

[1:14] even in a hypothetical future where
