[0:08] based in Houston that filed for
[0:10] bankruptcy last month. Down the drain
[0:12] went some $60 billion in stockholder
[0:14] investments and employee savings plans
[0:16] while a few executives at the top sold
[0:18] their shares for a killing. As well,
[0:19] Enron's auditor, the Arthur Anderson
[0:21] accounting firm, admits company
[0:23] documents were destroyed. In the good
[0:25] old days, Enron contributed lavishly to
[0:27] candidates from both parties and to
[0:28] George W. Bush. In recent days, a number
[0:31] of administration officials at the
[0:32] cabinet and subc cabinet level have
[0:34] disclosed they were lobbyed for help by
[0:36] Enron executives and even by a former
[0:38] Clinton cabinet member. But appearing on
[0:39] Fox News Sunday this morning, Treasury
[0:41] Secretary Paul O'Neal, one of those
[0:43] lobbied, denied any wrongdoing.
[0:46] I didn't think there was anything
[0:48] inappropriate about someone calling me
[0:50] to give me a heads up that there were
[0:52] some technical things that we ought to
[0:54] pay attention to. I don't find that
[0:56] inappropriate. It seems to me it's
[0:58] exactly the right uh discharge of my
[1:00] duty to make sure that the public's not
[1:02] going to be hurt by uh some individual
[1:05] company action.
[1:07] >> Such explanations by the president's men
[1:09] are falling flat with some Senate
[1:10] Democrats. One lawmaker says he's
[1:12] troubled by an appearance of impropriy
[1:15] in the easy access Enron enjoyed to top
[1:17] level members of the Bush
[1:18] administration.
