[0:00] From
[0:06] ABC, this is a special edition of World
[0:09] News Tonight with Peter Jennings.
[0:10] >> Good evening. In the Middle East today,
[0:12] the US used fighters and fighter
[0:14] bombers. The Iraqis used Scud missiles
[0:16] and oil. The US High Command says there
[0:18] have been more attacks on Iraq and
[0:19] Kuwait. In the last 24 hours than on any
[0:22] other day since the war began. As for
[0:24] the Iraqis, they have opened a pipeline
[0:26] and according to the US are pouring
[0:28] millions of gallons of oil straight into
[0:31] the Persian Gulf. They have also
[0:32] successfully attack Saudi Arabia and
[0:34] Israel again with their missiles. We
[0:37] begin with ABC's Dean Reynolds who's in
[0:39] Tel Aviv.
[0:46] There was a frightening duel in the sky
[0:48] over Israel tonight.
[0:53] Patriot missile interceptors creasing
[0:55] the darkness in search of scuds

[1:01] many shafts of light.
[1:04] But some of the Scuds were only
[1:05] deflected when 8 to 10 of them fell to
[1:08] Earth, they did real damage both in Tel
[1:10] Aviv and in Hifa. And several of the
[1:13] patriots found nothing at all, vainly
[1:16] skimming the horizon until crashing back
[1:18] toward the people and property they were
[1:20] supposed to protect.
[1:25] Watch this slow, arcing patriot scour
[1:28] the clouds for a target before suddenly
[1:31] dropping like a rock on Tel Aviv.
[1:34] The army explanation was not reassuring
[1:36] to Israelis. Sometimes a Patriot missile
[1:40] may run into the wrong place or even as
[1:43] a result of some technical error. It
[1:46] should go into down into the earth.
[1:50] The army said it was too early to say
[1:52] whether the Scuds or the errant patriots
[1:55] did most
