[0:01] Direct from our newsroom in New York. In
[0:04] color, this is the CBS Evening News with
[0:06] Walter Kronite and Eric Seine in
[0:10] Washington, Al Walker in Washington,
[0:12] Gary Shepard at Firebase Air Race, South
[0:15] Vietnam, Joe Bart in Minneapolis, and
[0:18] Daniel Shore in Washington.
[0:21] >> Good evening. Congressional
[0:23] investigators say the problem is
[0:25] skyrocketing away from any solution.
[0:27] Army authorities acknowledge that the
[0:29] crisis is real and they're going all out
[0:31] to cope with it. Both groups are talking
[0:34] about marijuana and the extent to which
[0:36] American servicemen are using the drug
[0:38] in Vietnam as the war fades away for
[0:40] them. You will see for yourselves this
[0:42] evening in this graphic report from Gary
[0:44] Shepard.
[0:46] This is fire support base Aries, a small
[0:50] clearing in the jungles of war zone D,
[0:52] 50 mi northeast of Saigon.
[0:55] Like most other American installations,
[0:58] Firebase Aries isn't very busy these
[1:00] days. The war is at its lowest level in
[1:03] 5 years, and there just isn't much to
[1:06] do.
[1:07] The big guns, which normally would be
[1:09] firing around the clock if the war were
[1:11] raging, now remain silent most of the
[1:14] day. And the men had a lot of time on
[1:16] their hands.
[1:18] time for such former luxuries as
[1:20] haircuts
[1:24] >> and games of volleyball.
[1:26] >> All right,
[1:27] [Music]
[1:33] >> and even the occasional live
[1:35] entertainment by the first cavalry
[1:37] division band during a leisurely
[1:39] noon-hour lunch break.
[1:42] Time also for a trip to a muddy swimming
[1:44] hole less than 200 yd from the firebase
[1:47] perimeter.
[1:48] But in this case, the trip is more than
[1:51] a mere stroll in the jungle.
