[0:02] On World News Tonight this Saturday,
[0:04] John F. Kennedy Jr. and his wife and his
[0:07] sister-in-law are missing and presumed
[0:10] to be dead. A search continues for his
[0:13] plane that disappeared last night into
[0:15] the sea off the island of Martha's
[0:18] Vineyard in the Atlantic Ocean. It was
[0:20] meant to be a day of celebration for the
[0:21] Kennedys gathered at the family compound
[0:23] in Hyannisport, Massachusetts for a
[0:26] wedding. It has turned into a vigil of
[0:28] deepest concern and prayer
[0:35] from ABC. This is World News Tonight
[0:40] Saturday. Good evening everybody. I'm
[0:42] Peter Jennings. As part of our
[0:43] continuing coverage of the Kennedy
[0:46] disaster today, tonight members of the
[0:48] Kennedy family are keeping vigil in
[0:50] Hyannisport as rescue team search for
[0:52] John F. Kennedy Jr., his wife Carolyn
[0:55] bet and her sister. When they left a New
[0:58] Jersey airport last night in Kennedy's
[1:00] plane, they were headed for Martha's
[1:02] Vineyard where they were going to make a
[1:04] stop. Their final destination was
[1:05] intended to be Hyannesport just to the
[1:07] north. Tonight, hopes are certainly
[1:10] waning. The search does continue as
[1:12] everybody prays for what the Coast Guard
[1:14] commander called a miraculous
[1:16] development. We're going to begin with
[1:18] ABC's Bob Jameson.
[1:21] The Piper Saratoga, a plane like this
[1:23] one, took off from Essex County Airport
[1:25] in northern New Jersey at about 8:45
[1:27] last night. It headed for Vineyard Haven
[1:30] Airport. A family friend said John F.
[1:32] Kennedy Jr.'s wife, Carolyn Basset, and
[1:35] her sister, Lauren Betett, were on board
[1:37] with him. Kennedy has had his private
[1:39] pilot's license for a little more than a
[1:41] year. Pilot Kyle Bailey says Kennedy is
[1:44] a regular at the Fairfield, New Jersey
[1:46] airirstrip.
[1:47] >> I could not see who was flying the
[1:48] airplane. All I know is I saw uh John M.
[1:51] Caroline get in the airplane. I do not
[1:53] know if there was anybody else on board.
[1:54] >> ABC News has learned that radar shows
[1:56] the plane dropping suddenly from 2200 ft
[2:00] to,300 ft about 19 m from the island
[2:03] airport. It disappeared off the radar
[2:06] screen after that. And tonight the
[2:08] search has narrowed to Martha's
[2:10] Vineyard. The sweeping search involving
[2:12] up to a half dozen agencies. The Air
[2:14] Force, the Air National Guard, the Civil
[2:16] Air Patrol, the FAA, and the Coast
[2:19] Guard.
[2:19] >> We have found debris. We have found
[2:21] luggage approximately 100 yards off of
[2:24] Gayhead Beach, and we're still pursuing
[2:27] an active search and rescue mission.
[2:30] >> Indications are that the luggage
[2:32] belonged to Kennedy's sister-in-law.
[2:34] Also, a headrest, carpet, a wheel from
[2:36] the craft, and a sneaker were reported
[2:38] found on the island's western beaches.
[2:41] >> There is always hope, but unfortunately,
[2:44] when you find certain uh pieces of
[2:47] evidence, um you know, you have to be
[2:51] prepared for anything that happens.
[2:53] >> At the family compound in Hyannis,
[2:55] prayers for the passengers at a mass
[2:57] said this morning as the family so
[2:59] familiar with tragedy waits. Bob
[3:02] Jameson, ABC News, New York.
[3:04] >> It's that wreckage, that debris that
[3:06] they're coming upon that is the clue to
[3:08] the disaster. Some of the wreckage was
[3:09] found off the southwest corner of
[3:11] Martha's Vineyard. Planes would fly over
[3:13] this particular part of the sea on their
[3:15] way to the local airport as President
[3:18] Kennedy's son was intending to do just
[3:20] before 10:00 last night. ABC's Bill
[3:23] Blakemore is at Martha's Vineyard
[3:25] tonight.
[3:27] Debris began washing up on the sands
[3:29] here near Gayhead at the southwest
[3:31] corner of Martha's Vineyard. These
[3:33] southern beaches are roughly under a
[3:35] possible approach path of the plane
[3:37] trying to land at Martha's Vineyard
[3:39] Airport. Kennedy's plane was last seen
[3:41] on radar some 10 mi to the west of this
[3:43] point over open water. The last radar
[3:47] contact with Kennedy's plane showed the
[3:49] plane descending from 5 1/2,000 ft to 2
[3:52] 1/2,000 then to 2,200.
[3:55] But by the time the radar had swept
[3:57] around again 12 seconds later, the plane
[4:00] had plunged 900 ft from 2,100 to 1,300.
[4:06] Apparently a precipitous dive, according
[4:08] to aviation experts. 1,300 ft was the
[4:12] last radar contact with the plane. It
[4:14] was also way too low for any approach
[4:16] path to an airport that's 19 m away. The
[4:20] approaches to Martha's Vineyard Airport
[4:22] yesterday evening, according to pilots
[4:24] here, were complicated by misty
[4:26] conditions, though there is no
[4:28] indication yet whether the Kennedy's
[4:30] plane had encountered any adverse
[4:32] conditions. 20 aircraft and at least two
[4:35] boats continued to sweep the search area
[4:37] this evening. Also moving into the area
[4:40] is the Ruby, a ship equipped with
[4:42] special sides scanning sonar, which can
[4:44] produce detailed pictures of objects on
[4:46] the sea floor. The fear as time goes by
[4:50] is that that is where the plane will be
[4:52] found. Nothing remotely like it has been
[4:55] spotted on the surface. Bill Blakemore
[4:57] at Gaye Head Martha's Vineyard. There
[5:00] has been an awful lot of talk about this
[5:02] plane today last April. JFK Jr. bought
[5:05] the plane that rescue workers are
[5:06] searching for so intensely. And as ABC's
[5:09] Lisa Stark reports for us now, it is a
[5:11] small plane with a good record.
[5:16] John Fitzgerald Kennedy Jr. received his
[5:18] pilot's license in April of last year.
[5:21] He did his training at Flight Safety at
[5:23] Vero Beach Airport in Florida. The
[5:25] restaurant there boasts his autograph.
[5:28] Kennedy owned two planes. The first a
[5:30] single engine Cessna 182. Last night he
[5:34] was flying his Piper Saratoga like this
[5:36] one. The single engine plane was built
[5:38] in June of 1995. JFK Jr. purchased his
[5:42] red and white Saratoga used just two and
[5:45] a half months ago. So presumably he had
[5:48] relatively little experience in the
[5:50] cockpit of this plane. Piper says the
[5:53] plane was equipped with all the modern
[5:54] instruments and had an emergency locator
[5:56] transmitter, but the Coast Guard said
[5:58] they never received a signal from this
[6:01] plane.
[6:01] >> This airplane is a very stable aircraft.
[6:04] Uh it's used in a lot of different
[6:06] operations for flight training. When
[6:08] Kennedy and his passengers took off from
[6:10] Essex Airport, it was dusk. Visibility
[6:13] was 3 to 5 miles. It was hazy. Pilot
[6:16] Kyle Bailey saw the trio board the
[6:18] airplane.
[6:19] >> It looked to me like he had a crutch, if
[6:21] I remember correctly, and he was
[6:22] limping. Uh, that's all I remember. I
[6:25] don't
[6:25] >> And a flight instructor on Martha's
[6:27] Vineyard who had flown with JFK Jr. in
[6:29] the past described him as a diligent
[6:31] pilot who loves to fly. As for
[6:34] conditions on the island last night,
[6:36] >> well, it was probably pretty dark. I
[6:37] don't think there was a moon out. Um,
[6:39] and the visibility, as I say, was pretty
[6:41] low. It's It would have been a
[6:42] challenging um flight for um any VFR
[6:46] pilot.
[6:48] >> VFR pilot visual flight rules. That's
[6:51] how the flight was operating, not under
[6:52] instrument conditions. JFK Jr. was not
[6:55] rated for instrument conditions. But
[6:57] even with visual flight rules, as pilots
[6:59] have told us, it is very tough to fly a
[7:01] single engine plane in the dark over the
[7:04] ocean, even for the most experienced
[7:06] pilot. Peter,
[7:07] >> thanks very much. Lisa Stark, who's been
[7:09] with us all day on this story. Still
[7:10] ahead on World News Tonight this
[7:12] Saturday, a continuing coverage of the
[7:15] search for John F. Kennedy Jr.'s missing
[7:17] airplane. And we'll go live to the
[7:18] Kennedy compound in Hyannesport.
[7:25] >> This is World News Tonight Saturday
[7:29] brought to you by Advil.
[7:31] >> Vineyard.
[7:32] >> This is really something. You see this
[7:34] pain reliever?
[7:35] Nothing is proven to work better or last
[7:38] longer. Nothing.
[7:41] You see this one? For 14 years, people
[7:43] have counted on this for relief. And
[7:44] it's gentle on the stomach. And you may
[7:47] be surprised to learn that both are
[7:50] Advil. It's true. Nothing's proven to
[7:53] work better or longer than Advil. And
[7:55] millions of people can tell you it's
[7:56] gentle to the stomach. Strong yet
[7:59] gentle. Advil.
[8:02] The best way to cure athletes foot so it
[8:04] won't come back is here. New Lamicel AT.
[8:07] So powerful, it does what no other brand
[8:09] can do. These take four weeks of
[8:12] treatment to kill the fungus. Lamol AT
[8:14] is so powerful with just one week's use,
[8:16] it stops the itching and burning and
[8:17] cures athletes foot between the toes. So
[8:20] powerful, a clinical study showed three
[8:22] whole months later, users were still
[8:23] athletes foot free. Now without a
[8:26] prescription. New Lamat, the best way to
[8:29] cure athletes foot fast so it won't come
[8:31] back.
[8:33] out here. I'm in command. So, am I
[8:35] supposed to say, "Slow down, guys. I'm
[8:38] constipated." I don't think so.
[8:41] >> You had to eat right. Sometimes you
[8:43] can't. Harsh chemical laxatives. They
[8:45] can kick in whenever and wherever. Not
[8:48] an option. So, I rely on doctor
[8:50] recommended Metamucil. It's got 100%
[8:52] natural fiber. Works with my body
[8:55] gently, which is important to a
[8:57] sensitive guy like myself. Metamucil,
[9:00] the doctor's natural choice for
[9:01] regularity.
[9:03] >> The scene in Hyannasport, Massachusetts,
[9:05] is a familiar one to the nations. We
[9:07] have watched before as the Kennedy
[9:08] family has retreated into its compounds
[9:10] to deal with its tragedies. ABC's
[9:13] Charles Gibson is up there tonight.
[9:14] Charles,
[9:15] >> Peter, as you mentioned at the top of
[9:17] the broadcast, this was to be a day of
[9:18] Kennedy celebration, not a day of
[9:20] Kennedy condolence. The wedding of Rory
[9:23] Kennedy was to be taking place right now
[9:26] as we speak. 275 guests to Mark Bailey,
[9:30] her longtime boyfriend. But after
[9:32] midnight and through the early morning
[9:34] hours, there was a realization by the
[9:36] family that something had gone terribly,
[9:38] terribly wrong.
[9:40] John Jr. and Caroline called their house
[9:43] at the compound last night to say they'd
[9:45] be in a bit after 10:00 to the nearby
[9:47] Barnstable Airport. But when they
[9:50] weren't in by 11:00, people began to
[9:52] worry. And by this morning, there was
[9:54] knowing doubt. The wedding was cancelled
[9:56] early today. Ethel Kennedy, the mother
[9:59] of the bride, realizing early that there
[10:02] could be no celebration on this day. The
[10:05] mood among the gathered wedding guests
[10:07] as they walked the beach this morning,
[10:09] was hopeful. It's just like John to stop
[10:11] somewhere. They said Brian O' Conor, the
[10:14] family spokesman, tried to put the best
[10:16] face on things.
[10:17] >> It's it's somber. There are a lot of
[10:18] children running around. That tends to
[10:20] lighten the the uh the atmosphere. Uh,
[10:23] and as I said, when families come
[10:26] together and greet each other, there's,
[10:28] you know, people are happy to see one
[10:30] another, but obviously there's a great
[10:31] deal of concern with the circumstances.
[10:34] Uh, today flags on the compound stayed
[10:37] at the top of the flag poles. No one was
[10:39] thinking about lowering them and
[10:41] acknowledging tragedy. But with each
[10:44] passing hour, you could see in the faces
[10:46] of those coming in and going out of the
[10:49] compound that hope was waning. The tent
[10:52] inside designed to house the wedding and
[10:55] reception was due also to be the site of
[10:57] a morning mass. Instead, it became a
[11:00] prayer service of hope. John's sister
[11:03] Caroline, the older child of President
[11:06] John F. Kennedy and Jquel and Kennedy,
[11:08] was not here. She had not planned to
[11:09] attend the wedding. Rory, the bride to
[11:12] be, was the youngest child of Robert and
[11:14] Ethel Kennedy, born after her father was
[11:17] assassinated in 1968.
[11:20] She is no stranger to family tragedy. It
[11:23] was she who held her brother Michael as
[11:26] he died after a skiing accident last
[11:28] year. Though the wedding was cancelled
[11:31] early today. Ironically, flowers, party
[11:34] equipment, even wedding tuxedos to be
[11:36] worn by groomsmen kept arriving
[11:39] throughout the day.
[11:41] As much as possible, we are told the
[11:44] Kennedys tried to keep the radios and
[11:45] the televisions turned off. But we do
[11:47] know that word is filtered in about the
[11:50] debris washing ashore on Martha's
[11:52] Vineyard and the family knows all too
[11:54] well what that means. All too well,
[11:57] Peter.
[11:58] >> Thank you, Charlie. Charlie Gibson and
[11:59] Hyannis tonight. He'll be with us on an
[12:01] 8:00 special Eastern time this evening.
[12:04] When we come back, we'll look out across
[12:06] the nation to see how the nation has
[12:07] been reacting to the day.
[12:16] My dentures always fit fine. I never
[12:18] thought of them as a problem until I saw
[12:20] the video of my son's wedding. It was
[12:22] then that I decided to try Fixed Dent.
[12:24] >> Because Fixedent adjusts to the unique
[12:26] contours of your dentures and gums,
[12:28] forming a thin, powerful seal for a
[12:30] better hold than you ever thought
[12:32] possible.
[12:32] >> It was like a whole new feeling. So snug
[12:35] and secure. For once, I actually forgot
[12:37] that I even wore dentures. So now I like
[12:40] what I see.
[12:41] >> Find out for yourself what it feels like
[12:43] to fix it and forget it.
[12:46] >> When I get a migraine, I just want to
[12:48] get rid of it. And I found a way to do
[12:50] it in one dose. One dose with Eedin
[12:53] Migraine. Its special formula has been
[12:55] clinically proven to safely relieve
[12:57] migraine headache pain in just one dose.
[13:00] No other non-prescription medicine can
[13:01] say that. And Eedin Migraine is the one
[13:03] doctors recommend most for migraine
[13:05] pain. So for relief in just one dose,
[13:08] there's one way. Extended migraine
[13:10] safely relieves migraine pain in just
[13:13] one dose.
[13:18] >> Rumbling
[13:22] yogurt
[13:24] taste of butter. You'll try again.
[13:26] >> The goodness of yogurt. The creamy taste
[13:27] of butter with half the fat and
[13:29] calories. Must be rumbling brown.
[13:32] Sir,
[13:33] >> would you just kind of smell that scent
[13:34] and tell me what you think? Oh my gosh.
[13:36] How does it smell?
[13:38] >> Fresh,
[13:40] >> clean.
[13:40] >> It's actually shampoo. It's It's first
[13:42] time shampoo. Can you believe it?
[13:43] >> For heaven's sake. It only takes a
[13:45] second to inhale.
[13:47] >> When it comes to your health, never
[13:49] compromise, even when choosing a
[13:51] laxative. You need one that's strong
[13:52] enough to work overnight, but also
[13:54] gentle. Try doctor recommended Dulax.
[13:56] It's both strong and gentle. It even has
[13:59] a special comfort coating to protect
[14:01] your stomach. In fact, doctors recommend
[14:03] Dulax most. More than correct and
[14:06] Zenicott combined. Don't compromise. Get
[14:08] strong. Get gentle. Get doctor
[14:10] recommended Dulax. And for strong and
[14:12] gentle relief in minutes, get Dolax
[14:15] suppositories.
[14:17] >> Can Tiger Woods make a move from fourth
[14:19] place at the British Open? Can Justin
[14:20] Leonard win again from five shots off
[14:22] the lead? Unheralded Frenchman Jean
[14:24] Vanderel the leader. The final round
[14:26] tomorrow morning at 9 Eastern on ABC.
[14:31] President Clinton was told about this
[14:33] difficulty at about 7 o'clock this
[14:35] morning. The Clintons and many members
[14:36] of the Kennedy family are friendly, so
[14:38] he called a number of them, including
[14:40] JFK's sister Caroline and his uncle,
[14:43] Senator Ted Kennedy. A reaction to word
[14:46] that the plane was missing was very
[14:48] strong and has been very farreaching.
[14:50] ABC's Guju Chang has more about that.
[14:54] In the trends setting New York
[14:55] neighborhood that the young Kennedys
[14:57] called home, news of his plain's mystery
[15:00] sparked small acts of sympathy.
[15:02] >> Been through so many tragedies, one tra
[15:04] tragedy after another. It's just
[15:06] unbelievable.
[15:08] >> Many who are too young to remember JFK's
[15:10] death are now deeply moved by his son's
[15:13] disappearance.
[15:14] >> I and I hate this that this is going to
[15:16] be something a day that I'll always
[15:17] remember. I I would rather obviously
[15:20] not, but it Yeah, unfortunately I'll
[15:23] probably be telling my own children
[15:24] about this someday.
[15:25] >> At JFK's gravesite, visitors stopped to
[15:28] say prayers for the Kennedys,
[15:30] >> and I pray for him that the Lord will,
[15:32] you know, find him safe.
[15:34] >> In New York's Central Park, where JFK
[15:36] Jr. often exercised and played sports,
[15:38] people talked of what could have been
[15:41] >> if he was to go into politics.
[15:42] Obviously, he had the uh he had the
[15:44] looks and smarts evidently, and you
[15:45] know, who knows what what that could
[15:47] have brought. uh maybe return to
[15:48] Camelot.
[15:49] >> Vice President Gore summed up what many
[15:51] were thinking today when he wisfully
[15:53] called JFK Jr. an extraordinary man at
[15:56] the height of his career. Juju Chang,
[15:58] ABC News, New York.
[16:00] >> There's been a similar reaction in other
[16:01] countries. The story of this missing
[16:03] plane has been the front page and front
[16:05] broadcast news in Great Britain, Russia,
[16:07] Italy, and in Germany. When we come
[16:10] back, a life as he and his wife lived
[16:14] it.
[16:21] It's time for your heartburn to kick in
[16:24] because your heartburn relief gave out.
[16:26] It happens two or more days a week even
[16:29] though you've treated it and changed
[16:30] your diet. That frequent persistent
[16:32] heartburn may be due to acid reflux
[16:34] disease, potentially serious.
[16:39] It's pryloc time. Time to see your
[16:42] doctor about prescription pryloc. Your
[16:45] results may vary, but for many people,
[16:47] Pryloc provides 24 hours of complete
[16:49] heartburn relief with one daily dose.
[16:52] Ask your doctor for more information
[16:54] about Pryloc and if it's right for you.
[16:56] The most common side effects are
[16:58] headache, diarrhea, and abdominal pain.
[17:00] 24 hours of complete heartburn relief is
[17:03] possible. It's Pryloc time.
[17:06] >> Why is it models always look 15
[17:08] wrinkles? Talk to her in about 20 years.
[17:10] At the Pon Institute, we don't give you
[17:12] hype, just results. Our agedefying
[17:14] lotion is proven to visibly reduce fine
[17:16] lines by up to 77%. Agedefying lotion.
[17:19] No hype, just younger looking skin.
[17:23] >> Meaderm CQ. What brought this on
[17:26] >> last night?
[17:26] >> Dad, when the baby comes, leave the
[17:30] cigarettes at home. Okay.
[17:32] We didn't quit for our kids.
[17:34] >> We didn't know what we know now. Look, I
[17:37] talked to some guys who quit. CQ helped
[17:40] them do it. The three gradual steps. You
[17:42] step down your dose. The doc says
[17:45] gradual is the way to go.
[17:46] >> Nicaderm CQ. The power to calm, the
[17:49] power to comfort, the power to help you
[17:51] quit.
[17:52] >> Wedding season is here. And isn't it
[17:54] nice to know there's one thing that will
[17:56] never let you down. Thompson's Wood
[17:58] Protector for rain, sun, mildew. It's
[18:00] the most powerful Thompson's yet. You
[18:02] may now protect the deck. Thompson's
[18:04] Wood Protector. It never takes a day
[18:06] off. Life's an adventure because you're
[18:09] over 50 and still exploring. So take the
[18:12] Sententrum made just for you. Centrum
[18:13] Silver with age essential nutrients
[18:16] specially adjusted to keep pace with
[18:17] your changing nutritional needs. Centrum
[18:20] Silver. It's a great time to be silver.
[18:23] John John as we knew him then made a
[18:25] tremendous impression on the country
[18:27] when he was a child. He has known more
[18:29] adoration and certainly more sorrow than
[18:32] most. Here's ABC's Kevin Newman.
[18:35] It was on his third birthday that a
[18:37] restless John John, as we knew him then,
[18:39] turned to salute his father's coffin as
[18:41] it went by. He had recently honored his
[18:44] father, too, by giving his first plane,
[18:47] not the one missing, a registration
[18:49] number using his father's initials and
[18:51] birthday. 529 May 29th, JK. There were
[18:56] happy memories, too. He had this desk in
[18:58] the Oval Office which was made which
[19:00] belonged to a sea captain and the uh it
[19:03] was made from a American frigot and I
[19:06] just remember the inside you could climb
[19:08] around in and there were kind of
[19:10] cavernous spaces in it and we used
[19:12] >> remember crawling inside.
[19:13] >> Yeah. And just hanging out there and he
[19:15] used to give us chewing gum cuz my
[19:17] mother uh didn't like us to chew gum so
[19:19] we used to go over the oval office at
[19:20] night and he'd feed us gum under the
[19:22] desk. After the assassination, hoping to
[19:24] give her children as normal an
[19:26] upbringing as possible, Jacqueline
[19:28] Kennedy moved Jon and his older sister
[19:30] Caroline away from Washington to an
[19:32] apartment in New York City. But once
[19:34] again, tragedy followed. The man who had
[19:37] become John Jr.'s surrogate father,
[19:39] Robert Kennedy, was also assassinated
[19:41] just months before John's 8th birthday.
[19:44] Four months after that, Jacqueline
[19:46] Kennedy married Greek shipping tycoon
[19:48] Aristotle Onasses, and they moved the
[19:50] family to a secluded private island. But
[19:52] she bowed to pressure from the Kennedys,
[19:54] and John and Caroline completed their
[19:56] education in the US. Unlike his father,
[20:00] who went to Harvard, John Kennedy Jr.
[20:02] graduated in ' 83 from Brown University
[20:05] and later from the New York University
[20:07] Law School.
[20:09] >> Good luck today.
[20:11] The spotlight followed him everywhere,
[20:13] even on his first day on the job as an
[20:15] assistant district attorney in New York.
[20:17] >> When I failed the bar exam, that was a,
[20:19] you know, the New York Post had the
[20:20] headline, "The hunk flunk." So, some of
[20:22] that I could actually do without.
[20:23] >> He was always on the move, seeking new
[20:25] adventures. His father had once said, "A
[20:28] man does what he must in spite of
[20:30] personal consequences, in spite of
[20:32] obstacles and dangers and pressures."
[20:35] Well, in spite of the press, John Jr.
[20:36] tried to live as normal a life as
[20:38] possible. Last seen here in public
[20:40] Thursday at a Yankees game.
[20:43] >> Ladies and gentlemen, meet George.
[20:45] >> In 1995, he decided to join the ranks of
[20:48] the popular press by launching a
[20:50] magazine that covers politics. His
[20:52] mother, an accomplished editor, was at
[20:54] first lukewarm to George. I think we
[20:57] showed her in mock cover and she was a
[21:00] little skeptical, but I I think that uh
[21:03] that she had always encouraged both
[21:05] Caroline and I to to make our own way to
[21:08] not be subordinate our own lives to the
[21:11] expectations of what we should do with
[21:14] our lives. And so in that respect um I
[21:16] think she got a kick out of it.
[21:18] >> John Kennedy Jr.'s name came with a
[21:20] heavy burden, but in life he has always
[21:23] chosen to bear it lightly. People come
[21:25] up to you all the time and say, you
[21:26] know, I got into politics because your
[21:28] father brought me in there. Or, you
[21:30] know, I really your uncle Bobby meant an
[21:33] enormous amount to me. I mean,
[21:34] especially being in from New York. And
[21:36] that's a great very warming uh
[21:41] legacy to be a part of and I and I'm and
[21:43] I'm grateful for it.
[21:44] >> He is in the minds of many America's
[21:47] favorite son. Kevin Newman, ABC News,
[21:51] New York.
[21:53] John Kennedy and Carolyn Vet were
[21:55] married almost three years ago and she
[21:57] was thrust into the most glaring
[22:00] spotlight. Here's ABC's Judy Mueller.
[22:03] When Carolyn Vet married John F. Kennedy
[22:06] Jr., a family friend said, "Jackie must
[22:09] be smiling in heaven." Indeed, the six-
[22:12] foot tall Carolyn with her elegantly
[22:14] simple sense of style reminded many
[22:16] people of Jacqueline Kennedy Onasses, a
[22:18] Roman Catholic whose parents are
[22:20] divorced, she grew up in the upscale
[22:22] community of Greenwich, Connecticut.
[22:24] After graduating from Boston University
[22:26] in 1988, she briefly pursued a modeling
[22:29] career, then worked as a public
[22:31] relations executive at Calvin Klein. Her
[22:34] wedding to the crown prince of Camelot
[22:35] on a secluded island off the coast of
[22:37] Georgia was a well-kept secret and left
[22:40] the gossip columnists scrambling for
[22:42] details.
[22:43] >> I think you have to say the world's most
[22:45] eligible man is no longer eligible.
[22:47] >> No sooner had they said their ideas than
[22:49] they had to beg the paparazzi, please
[22:51] don't. To the photographers who'd camped
[22:53] on the sidewalk in front of their
[22:55] Manhattan loft, Jon pleaded, please give
[22:57] Carolyn all the privacy and room you
[22:59] can. But despite the new bride's hopes
[23:02] for privacy, she soon learned what it
[23:04] means to be a Kennedy, to be in the
[23:06] public eye, to be part of an American
[23:08] legend. Carolyn has identical twin
[23:11] sisters 18 months older than she. One of
[23:14] them, Lauren, was aboard the plane with
[23:16] her. The last time she'd been with the
[23:18] Kennedy clan was for the funeral of
[23:20] cousin Michael Kennedy, who died in a
[23:22] skiing accident. Carolyn had become very
[23:25] much a part of that family. Judy
[23:28] Mueller, ABC News.
[23:30] Somebody today referred to the Kennedy
[23:32] family history as the Trail of Tears.
[23:34] When we come back,
[23:42] got heartburn caused by acid reflux?
[23:45] Only Gavascon forms a soothing
[23:47] protective barrier that keeps acid down.
[23:49] Pepsidac and Zantac 75 can't do that.
[23:53] >> Gavascon, it helps keep acid down where
[23:56] it belongs.
[23:58] Rumble and brown. Creamy dreamy and
[24:01] brown. It's got yogurt in it with the
[24:04] creamy taste of butter. You'll try
[24:06] again.
[24:06] >> The goodness of yogurt. The creamy taste
[24:08] of butter with half the fat and
[24:10] calories. Must be Rumble and Brown.
[24:12] >> Itchy allergic rash. The dermatologist I
[24:15] work for recommends Cordate. It stops
[24:17] the itch and helps heal the rash to
[24:18] restore your skin. There's no brand
[24:20] doctors recommend more. In fact, doctors
[24:22] recommend Cordate more than 4 to one
[24:24] over Cortisone 10. Cordate restore your
[24:26] skin. When you buy a bargain basement

[24:37] Dream on. With a Gateway Essential PC,

[25:19] Jennings for an ABC News special tonight
[25:21] at 8 Eastern. Coverage continues with
[25:23] updates throughout the evening and
[25:24] tomorrow morning on this week from ABC
[25:27] News.
[25:29] >> So many times down through the years,
[25:32] the Kennedys have been referred to as
[25:33] America's royalty. Very painful legacy
[25:36] to live with. Here's ABC's Beth Nissen.
[25:40] >> John F. Kennedy Jr. was born into an
[25:42] extended family marked by such extensive
[25:45] tragedy that many see the clan as ill-
[25:47] fated, haunted, even cursed. There has
[25:51] been a thread of tragedy through the
[25:53] Kennedy dynasty that has lasted 70 years
[25:56] or more.
[25:57] >> At the head of that dynasty, Joseph and
[25:59] Rose Kennedy, four of their nine
[26:02] children died tragically. Joseph Kennedy
[26:04] Jr. on a World War II bombing mission.
[26:06] Kathleen Kennedy in a 1948 plane crash.
[26:10] Hundreds of millions of people mourned
[26:11] the death of President John F. Kennedy
[26:13] after he was assassinated in Dallas in
[26:15] 1963.
[26:17] 5 years later, the world watched as
[26:19] Robert F. Kennedy lay dying,
[26:20] assassinated.
[26:22] >> Senator Kennedy has been shot.
[26:24] >> Joseph and Rose's surviving son, Senator
[26:26] Edward Kennedy, was critically injured
[26:27] in a 1964 plane crash. In 1969, he drove
[26:31] a car off a bridge on Massachusetts
[26:33] Chapitic Island. His aid, Mary Joe
[26:35] Capeknney, died. That happened 30 years
[26:38] ago this weekend.
[26:39] >> Edward Kennedy, after the accident of
[26:41] Chapaquitic, gave a national television
[26:44] address in which he wondered aloud
[26:47] whether there was some curse whether
[26:49] some awful curse did actually hang over
[26:53] all the Kennedys.
[26:55] >> That was 30 years ago. A lot worse has
[26:58] happened since then.
[26:59] >> Happened to the next generation of young
[27:01] Kennedys. Robert Kennedy's son David
[27:03] died of a drug overdose in 1984. His son
[27:06] Michael died in a skiing accident in
[27:08] Aspen on New Year's Eve 1997. He was 39.
[27:12] These are all very young people and it
[27:15] just multiplies the quotion of tragedy
[27:18] that you find in this in this family.
[27:20] >> In the wake of JFK's assassination,
[27:22] Jquel and Kennedy Onasus worked hard to
[27:24] keep her children safe. At Jackie's
[27:26] death in 1994, both John Jr. and Carolyn
[27:29] Kennedy seemed blessed with good health
[27:31] and happy families untouched by grave
[27:34] misfortune or accident until today. Beth
[27:38] Nissen, ABC News, New York. That is our
[27:41] report on World News Saturday. Later
[27:43] this evening at 8:00 p.m. Eastern time,
[27:45] a 2-hour ABC News special on the missing
[27:48] Kennedy plane and the country's reaction
[27:50] to it. I'm Peter Jennings. Thank you for
[27:52] joining us.
