[0:00] It's on

[0:04] >> from around the world and from CBS News

[0:07] headquarters in New York. This is the

[0:09] CBS Evening News with Dan Rather.

[0:13] >> Good evening. The record-breaking

[0:14] history-making cold wave now has caused

[0:17] about 100 deaths nationwide. The

[0:19] National Weather Service says that 75

[0:22] records for same day low temperatures

[0:24] have been set around the country since

[0:26] Sunday. That includes two all-time lows,

[0:29] 26 degrees below zero in Chicago Sunday

[0:33] and one above in Atlanta, Georgia

[0:34] yesterday. Today, the deep freeze sank

[1:18] not much we can do about that. You can

[1:21] light up a lot of heaters and not be

[1:22] able to save the fruit.

[1:24] >> Oranges were only one crop suffering

[1:27] extensive damage. South of Miami, tomato

[1:29] farmers growing 80% of the nation's

[1:32] winter tomatoes burned tires in the

[1:34] fields to help keep the crop from icing

[1:36] over. Damage was moderate. Much of the

[1:38] state's lettuce and celery crop was

[1:40] frozen. But it
