[0:03] N.
[0:09] 28 years ago today, John F. Kennedy was
[0:13] shot and killed.
[0:15] The official investigation conducted by
[0:17] the Warren Commission concluded that the
[0:19] gunman was Lee Harvey Oswald, acting
[0:22] alone.
[0:23] Oswald himself never testified.
[0:29] He was gunned down by Jack Ruby before
[0:31] he could be questioned.
[0:38] This is part of a Russian documentary on
[0:40] the Kennedy assassination.
[0:45] What this documentary never addresses is
[0:47] the fact that Oswald defected to the
[0:49] Soviet Union, lived there for 2 and 1/2
[0:52] years until his return to the United

[1:09] activities. But none of the KGB files
[1:12] has been made public
[1:14] until tonight.
[1:20] This is an ABC News Nightline

[1:40] powerful and gigantic bureaucracy like
[1:43] the Soviet Union's KGB opens a few of
[1:46] its doors for brief inspection.
[1:48] It was during just such a fleeting
[1:50] moment after the failed coup against
[1:52] Gorbachev late last summer that
[1:54] Nightline correspondent Forrest Sawyer
[1:56] and senior producer Bob Hamrick gained
[1:59] access to what for Americans at least
[2:02] has to be one of the most tantalizing
[2:04] files in the KGB's possession.
[2:06] What they got after many weeks of sheer
[2:09] journalistic
