[0:00] Five.

[0:02] >> Good evening. This is the CBS Evening

[0:03] News. Dan Rather reporting. The White

[0:05] House revealed today that President

[0:06] Reagan has ordered a broad review of US

[0:09] policy in Central America, including the

[0:11] strong possibility of an increase in the

[0:13] number and role of American military

[0:15] adviserss in El Salvador. Bob Sheeper

[0:18] has the details. The president arrived

[0:20] in California tonight as concern

[0:22] suddenly mounted both within the

[0:23] administration and on Capitol Hill over

[0:25] what to do about the worsening situation

[0:27] in El Salvador. On the flight from

[0:29] Washington, a senior Reagan aid told

[0:31] reporters on Air Force One, "The

[0:33] president is considering enlarging the

[0:35] force of 38 military advisers in El

[0:37] Salvador and perhaps expanding their

[0:39] role." Other officials said later the

[0:42] increase, if approved, would only

[0:43] involve a handful of new advisers who,

[0:45] like their comrades, would be barred

[0:47] from going into combat. But that

[0:49] disclosure came after congressional

[0:50] leaders were called to the White House

[0:52] earlier in the day and were told by the

[0:54] president that a bipartisan approach

[0:56] must be found to funnel perhaps as much

[0:58] as $60 million in new military aid to El

[1:01] Salvador. According to several who

[1:03] attended the meeting, the administration

[1:05] feels the Salvadoran army is still

[1:07] poorly trained and is not being

[1:09] aggressive enough while leftist rebel

[1:11] forces are getting better and better.

[1:13] The president made it clear that there

[1:15] is a serious problem in the region in

[1:18] respect to unrest,

[1:20] military conflict, civil strife.
